THE ONES NOT TO MISS

Massive 5% AER fixed 3 year savings
Almost 1% above next best, beats best 5 year fix! Plus new 4% for 18 months fix
fixed savings

Launched today, a new deal whacks the whole savings market over the head if you've big savings, with two fixed rate deals that demolish previous best buys in which you had to lock away cash for longer. All of these accounts have the full £85,000 UK safety.

  • 5% fixed for 3 years. A limited offer lets you lock cash away in Close Savings'* Premium Gold at 5% AER for 3 yrs. The previous top rate was 4.15%, and even over five years the next best is only 4.85% AER, so this is a corker. You need a minimum of £10k to open it, by post or phone.
  • 4% fixed for 18 months: If you'd prefer not to give up access for so long, Close Savings* also offers 4% AER for a shorter 18 month fixed period, which trounces the best buys for one and two years. Again it's min £10k and postal/phone applications.
  • Top Easy-Access: If you don't want to lock the cash away and may need access, Nationwide* MySave Online Plus (min £1,000) lets you take money out without notice and pays 2.95% AER but only allows one penalty free withdrawal/year. Alternatively Santander* eSaver is 2.9% AER (min £1) and has unlimited penalty free withdrawals. Though both include short term bonuses, so after a year ditch and switch.

Urgent! Get £1,000s state pension rebate. New Calc
Those short of NI years could buy some back, to boost pension & get a rebate
pension

Only those who've paid enough national insurance (NI) get the full basic state pension (£97.65 a week) once they hit the official retirement age. If you're short, making a top-up payment for missed years can mean a bigger future pension & a possible backdated payout for some who've already retired. To help, we've a brand new guide and calculator with all the info.

  • Why it's urgent. The last chance to get a backdated payout, if you're eligible, is 5 April this year. For everyone else the price of buying extra years may rise after this date too. Doing this takes time so get your skates on.
  • New Pension Boost Calculator: The State Pension Boost Calculator estimates how much it'll cost to boost your pension and how long you need live to recoup the cash. Eg, a woman who retired in April 2008 with 30 NI years who buys another five (at a £3,133 cost) will get £1,840 backdated and roughly £650 more a year (in today's prices). If she lives 20 years and she's almost £15,000 up!
  • Who should try? You need to be short on years to make it worthwhile. However, if you're eligible for pension credit the state will top-up what you get, so there's usually no point paying for it.

Longest EVER 0% on spending + M&S or Tesco points
New credit card gives 15 mths interest free on new spending plus rewards too
0 spending

Is the crunch over? Another new longest ever 0% deal's launched, this one for new spending, but only use it if you're to repay or shift all debts before the 0% ends. Interest free cards are great for planned purchases, but if you're using it to fill a gap in your income, that's dangerous, instead do a budget.

  • 15mths 0% + M&S points. New M&S credit cardholders passing its credit score get 0% for 15 months (15.9% rep APR after), plus usually earn 50p of M&S vouchers per £100 spent.
  • 13mths 0% + Urgent Tesco points. Tesco's* credit card gives new cardholders 13 months 0% on new borrowing. Plus, apply by 3 March for 500 bonus Clubcard points (worth £15 in Clubcard Rewards) if you spend £300+ within 2 months, plus the usual 25pts per £100 spent (75p in Rewards). 16.9% representative APR after.
  • 6mths 0% + 5% intro cashback. Repay sooner and Amex Platinum* card pays 5% cashback (£5 per £100) for the first 3 mths (max £100) then tiered rates up to 1.25% after (min £30k household income). 19.9% rep APR.
  • 18mths 0% on BALANCE TRANSFERS: To shift old debts to cut costs, Barclaycard Plat* gives accepted new customers 18mths 0% with a 2.9% fee (16.9% rep APR after), Nationwide's* 17mths at 0% with 2.95% fee (15.9% rep APR after). For full info & warnings see the best balance transfers guide.

For FULL info see the 0% spending credit cards guide (and Official APR examples). Savvy MoneySavers can also deliberately use 0% cards and save the money they're not spending at high interest, see the stoozing guide for more.

New 3.15% easy access tracker. Cash ISA watch!
New top easy access deal which guarantees to track base rates too

ISA season's revving on, with another new easy access tax-free cash ISA launched to beat the 5 April deadline. If you're a cash ISA newbie, it's simply a tax-free savings account you can put £5,100 in this tax year. All accounts here have the usual £85,000 Savings Safety guarantee.

  • 3.15% easy access tracker (new ISAs only): the Santander Flexible ISA pays 3.15% ISA watchAER (some existing customers get 3.3% AER with Loyalty ISA) and guarantees to be 2.65% above UK base rate for a year; it'll plummet after, so diarise, ditch & transfer.
  • 3% easy access allows transfers too: If you want to up the rate on old ISAs or consolidate them together with a new ISA for this year, Halifax's* ISA Direct Reward Issue 4 pays 3% AER for a year (some existing customers get 3.2% AER).
  • 3.5% if you lock cash away for two years: The fixed rate Halifax* ISA saver (min £500) pays a higher 3.5% AER guaranteed rate, but try and withdraw early and there's a 180 days interest penalty.

Free £100, 5% in-credit & 0% overdraft bank account
Now one account offers all these features together - for the first time in two years

Top balance transfersBest buys usually either target those who stay in credit OR go overdrawn. Yet a new account covers both, making it the overwhelming best buy based on rate and great for those who fluctuate. Plus we've the results of our latest customer service poll. To get either account below you need to switch and pay a min £15,000 salary.

  • Free £100, 5% in-credit & year's 0% overdraft: New Santander Preferred current account* customers signing up online get £100, and 5% in-credit interest on up to £2,500 for a year when you switch to it. It also gives a year's 0% overdraft (go over this and charges are big) after that it's 50p day (max £5/mth). However, while top on rate, even though its customer service has improved slightly, it's still bottom with only 59% rating it great or ok.
  • Free £5 every month: The Halifax* Reward account pays £5 per month when you deposit £1,000, and isn't only scheduled for the first year. Some 79% rate it great or OK, yet don't go near it if you're overdrawn as it's a min £1/day with no cap.
  • Free £100 and top customer service. Overwhelming winner of the poll was First Direct* with a massive 89% rating it great, though here you need to pay a salary over £23,500 in. It also pays £100 for signing up.

Beat 4.6% water bill hikes (9% in some areas)
Bills will rise on 1 April across England and Wales | Can you save £200+ a year?
Water bills
The water regulator Ofwat has announced water companies will be allowed to hike bills on 1 April in England and Wales. The avg rise will be 4.6% but in one region it's 9% (see regional table).

  • Can you save by switching to a water meter? With water, you can't switch providers, yet standard water bills are based on 'rateable' values (roughly what the property could've been rented out for in 1990!) and there's no way to challenge it. Here's a rule of thumb....

More bedrooms in your house than people? Consider using a water meter.

So with three rooms and two occupants you may be able to save by switching to a free meter (they cost in Scot) that measure usage. Both Uswitch* and the Consumer Council For Water have quick comparison calculators. They won't list the new prices until 1 April but still give a good indication. If it looks likely you'll save, speak to your water company.
  • Do you have a soakaway, septic tank or cesspit? Check now whether your water bill includes a sewerage charge to take water from your home. If so it's likely you're not using it and could get £20-£200 a year back - ask your water company for a form to fill.

Money Moral Dilemma

Real Life MONEY MORAL DILEMMA:
Should I ask ex for money?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I'm a single mum of two, I moved over 200 miles from my children's Dad after the relationship broke down. I drive monthly with the children (at my expense) to ensure regular contact. My ex and I made a private arrangement with regards to maintenance, which is half the amount he'd be asked to pay through CSA. I'm now struggling to pay off debts for our old home and can't really afford those trips. Is it unreasonable for me to ask for the cost of fuel? I don't ever ask for extra money and he earns a decent wage. Enter the Money Moral Maze: Should I ask ex for money? Previous MMDs: View All Suggest: A Money Moral Dilemma

Question Of The Week

MoneySaving Polls

Q. If I open an ISA for the tax year 2011/12 and half way through the year another provider has a better rate, can I transfer from my ISA to the new ISA in the same tax year?Andy by e-mail

MSE Sunny's A: The most important rule is you're only allowed to open one new cash ISA per tax year. Yet that doesn't mean once you've done it you can't transfer the cash elsewhere, however if you're moving the ISA you set up in THIS tax year then the money has to be moved across as a whole.

For ISAs from past years, when you transfer you can split it into as many accounts as you like. So if you had £10,200 saved in your ISA from previous subscriptions you could, if you wanted, transfer £1,020 to 10 different ISA accounts.

Of course that's the ISA rules, but individual providers have their own too - so occassionally you face a transfer out penalty. Remember to always transfer your ISAs using a bank or building society's transfer process. See the Full ISA Guide for more info and the best ISAs.

This week's poll:

Should women and men pay the same for insurance?

Last week's poll result:

Should we change the voting system?

Dead heat! 6,420 voted, and were split exactly down the middle on whether the UK should use 'alternative vote' or stick with 'first past the post' for general elections. Should make May's referendum on the topic very interesting!
