Don't miss out on PPI payouts
£557m claimed so far in 2011. 10 things everyone needs to know

PPI reclaiming is now, frankly, pretty easy. Since the banks lost in court in April, they're often just rolling over. Our latest poll revealed 88% of eligible people who'd tried, won. A huge £557m has been claimed this year and banks have put aside a further £6bn. So to be high-faluting, CARPE DIEM (seize the day) ...

1. "£2,000 cheque in the post. Whoop Whoop". To inspire you, here are just two recent tweets I've received: "Put PPI claim in to Santander and been offered £6,000 back straight away, no arguments", "Using your template, just been awarded £6,400", "PPI claimed through your info, offered over £20k. Smiling very widely". Many emails & Facebooks too.
2. PPI isn't bad, it's just sold that way (- Jessica Rabbit). PPI covers your loan repayments if you're ill or lose your job. That's fine, but providers massively oversold it, often with lies because their over-expensive policies were so profitable (tellingly, per £100 taken in, they typically paid out just £15).
3. PPI payouts rocket - don't miss outIf you've ever had a loan, check. You may not know you've had it, as one type of mis-selling was adding it without telling you. Others include saying it's compulsory (it's not), and that you'd pay a higher rate without it (wrong). Plus, if you were self-employed, unemployed or retired or weren't asked about a medical problem, it was probably mis-sold as it didn't cover you. See the mis-selling checklist.
4. Don't forget credit cards. If you've had a credit card it's possible you can reclaim too, even if it's paid off. See the Reclaim Credit Card PPI guide.
5. Not having paperwork shouldn't stop you. You've a legal right to a copy of the agreement from your lender for £1 (template letter). As this tweeter says: "I had no paperwork, the claims were over 6 years old and HSBC's offered me £900." If you don't remember your lender's name, check your credit file.
6. Don't just look at current loans and cards. The Ombudsman rule is if your account was ACTIVE in the last six years you can claim. So a loan taken out eleven years ago, fully repaid five years ago, is fine. However, we hear of some wins from even older loans (see above) so you could try.
7. Don't PAY to reclaim. Do it FREE. Grrrrr. So many ask "who's the best claims handler?" having been persuaded they can't DIY free. Claims handlers usually take 30% of your money (£900 on a £3,000 claim), often just for sending pro-forma letters. Only those with mental health, literacy problems, or with old non-FSA regulated loans should consider it (try the Use a claims handler? tool).
8. You can claim if bankrupt or in an IVA. If you owe the provider money, either now or from a previous debt, it may use payouts to pay off debt.
9. If you got rejected by a bank before, try again. Times have changed. Before May's court case some were being put on hold or rejected, even with good cases. If you think you've a strong case write again. No guarantees though.
10. It may take time. If the bank agrees without a fight, decisions are quick (though we've reports of payout delays, if so you may be entitled to extra compensation). Yet those who need to go to the free Ombudsman can wait over a year.

£100 Argos/Boots vouchers on cheap fixed energy tariff
Corking deal, plus get extra £30 cashback or crate of wine | It's the PERFECT time to switch

This is the perfect time to compare energy tariffs, as all the big six firms have put prices up, so there's a level playing field for comparison. Better still, Npower's just launched a hot price promo through some comparison sites.

Typical annual bills
Average standard tariff £1,350
Npower Go Fix 8 £1,090
Cheapest fix £1,050
Cheapest variable deal £1,030
  • Lock-in a cheap rate & get a free £100 Argos/Boots/Deb'hms voucher. Switch to Npower's dual fuel Go Fix 8 tariff via some comparison sites & get £100 Love2shop vouchers (£50 for gas or elec alone) for Argos, Boots, Deb'hms, ToysRUs after switching. It's £50 for gas or elec alone.

To get it, and find out if it's right for you, plug your postcode into one of the sites below and choose 'fixed tariffs only' results. Plus you get extra cashback or a crate of wine using these MSE links (not direct). If possible, opt for 'monthly direct debit' payments to slash bills further.

    Top Comparison:
Energyhelpline* pays £15 cashback per switch for gas, electricity or dual.
    Dual Fuel:
MoneySupermarket* pays £30 cashback or Uswitch* gives a crate of 12 bottles of mid-range wine.

Potential savings are huge: £250 a year less for a typical home than a standard tariff + the rate's guaranteed until February 2013. There are cheaper fixes, but only by £40 so with the vouchers, it undercuts them. Go quick as it's due to end soon.
  • Is it worth fixing? A fix is like an insurance policy against price hikes. If you can't risk rises, a cheap fix is a no-brainer. For those on standard tariffs, savings are huge, yet for households already on cheap deals, remember there's no guarantee prices will rise. Though this Npower tariff's exit fees are low at £20 each for gas & elec, so if you need to switch before the fix ends, it's not a huge loss. See full Fixing FAQ for more.

Bust the student finance 2012 myths
Only 40% know you don't pay upfront | 80% wrongly think monthly repayments will be higher

We all want bright students to go to uni if it's right for them. Yet as all people hear about the 2012 changes in England are the £9,000 a year fees, mass fear & ignorance are putting them off. So we're backing Student Finance Day next Monday. Then again, we would; it's run by Martin's Independent Taskforce.

  • Five key facts: 1) You don't need any cash to pay for uni. 2) Repayments only start once you've left university and earn £21,000+. They stop after 30 years. 3) You repay the same each month on £9,000 or £6,000 fees. 4) You repay LESS each month under the new system than today's graduates do. 5) Yet you will be repaying for a LOT longer than today's graduates and may pay much more. Full info: Student Fees 2012 - 20 key facts guide.
  • Student Finance Day is next MondayFree booklets for 6th formers & teachers: Download the You Can Afford to Go To Uni 6th formers' booklet, and the new Teacher's Guide to Student Finance.
  • Free videos: Watch the 3-min cartoon or Martin's 30 minute video guide.
  • Free one-on-one help: Over 40 English unis are holding drop-in sessions on Mon. You can go even if you've not applied to that uni. Plus from 4pm to 4.15pm on Mon, Martin is holding a Twitter clinic with The Student Room, tweet Qs to @martinslewis and use #unifees2012.
  • Free 'What'll it really cost?' calculator: Many yell that 2012 starters will leave with a dire £50,000 debt. The number's true but mostly irrelevant as repayments depend only on earnings after graduation. Many will pay a lot less, some higher earners more than double. www.studentfinancecalc.com works out your real cost.

Balance transfer war | 22mth 0% + £40 rebate
Want to shift debts? There's a battle to give you the best deal - now there's cashback too

Most credit cards charge around 20% interest. Shifting existing debts to a new 0% balance transfer card can slash costs by £100s so repayments clear the actual debt not just interest. Let battle commence ... All below require a credit check.

  • 22 mths 0% on debts plus up to £40 backShift to 22mth 0% with 2.9% fee and £40 refund. Still king of the castle, Barclaycard* Platinum is the longest 0% deal (min £20,000 salary). Plus, accepted new cardholders who switch £3,000+ get a £40 fee rebate. Repay or switch again before the 0% ends, or the rate jumps to 17.5% representative APR.

For shifting less, you can now go via comparison site Confused.com and it pays £30 cashback if you transfer £250+ to any Barclaycard, including the 22 mth Platinum deal above. If you can repay quicker, there's also a 16 month 0% with 1.6% fee deal from Barclaycard, yet fail to clear before the 0% ends and it's 18.9% representative APR. Our Which card is cheapest? tool should help.
  • Already got a Barclaycard? If so, forget the cards above, you won't be allowed to transfer. Instead, Halifax* is 22 months 0% with a 3.5% fee - though it ONLY accepts transfers under £3,000. Alternatively, Virgin* is 0% for 20 months with a 2.99% fee. Fail to fully repay and you'll pay 17.9% or 18.9% representative APR, respectively.

Cap the cost of payday loans e-petition
We're inundated with people asking "how can payday lenders be allowed to charge interest 4,000% APR?" So we thought we'd tell you about the new End Legal Loan Sharking e-petition backed by campaigner Stella Creasy MP. While we don't support interest rate caps (they're a bit of a nonsense, see when a pint is 143,000% APR) the industry's growing so fast & is so dangerous it needs regulation. Though we must take care not to push people to real loan sharks. Contrary to the petition's title they're very different, eg, using violence against children to collect. Question Of The Week

Q. Are customers within their rights to ask for refunds of postage costs for returning faulty goods bought over the net? Mike Newland

MSE Archna's A: Yes you are able to get postage costs back. Contract law stipulates where items do not conform to the contract, you must be returned to the position you were in before, so for faulty goods the company should reimburse postage costs.

For non-faulty goods the Distance Selling Regulations give you a legal right to a full refund within 7 days, whatever the reason, and this includes delivery. However, you usually have to pay for the cost of return postage, though some companies offer free postage return bags.

For more tips see the full Consumer Rights guide.
