How tight are you? Take the test
Is Ebenezer Scrooge your idol? Would you haggle in Poundland?
Do you open your wallet so rarely it's not moths that appear, but pterodactyls? Or are you so bad you couldn't hold onto your cash in Fort Knox? Find out, take our fun Christmas 'How tight are you?' test and challenge your friends.
A little tightness is good. MoneySaving is about cutting bills, not cutting back — unless you need to. Tightness goes further, it includes thrift and being less than generous. Hopefully our a little tongue in cheek test covers it all. The aim is balance. Scoring nowt makes you a wastrel, scoring 100%, a miser, not MoneySaver.
- How tight are you compared to... Phillip Schofield once called me (Martin) "the tightest man in Britain", but I'm proud the stats now prove that ain't true. In fact, and I may get in trouble for saying this, I'm not even the tightest in my own home, nor here at MSE Towers...

Christmas calls overseas for 45p an HOUR
Special numbers slash costs for calling abroad | The CallChecker finds the cheapest for EVERY country
If you've friends or family overseas, phoning them this Christmas can be costly. Call Australia on BT daytimes and it's £17 an hour, on Virgin £27. Yet there are ways to slash bills...
-
It's free web-to-web. If you AND the other person are online, talk for free anywhere in the world over the web via the likes of Skype* or VoipBuster. Some smartphones also let you download apps to do this via wi-fi or 3G.
Yet for web to phone, don't believe the Skype hype: Calling overseas mobiles & landlines is much cheaper by using the special numbers below.
- Instantly find cheapest way to call USA, Oz, India etc. Our free International CallChecker finds the cheapest number for each country from landlines. Many countries are just 0.5p/min (45p/hour incl connection charge) and most are under 5p/min.
It searches a range of companies that let you call overseas super-cheap without changing provider or setting up an account. Simply dial a prefix, then dial the normal number, it's billed to your home phone. They're no-frills providers, so don't expect quality service, just cheap prices.
- Don't call friends overseas on their UK mobiles. You pay the standard UK rate, but they pay extra to receive. It is often far cheaper overall to find a landline number (eg, hotel room) to call them on using a cheap calls provider.

Did you switch energy on the doorstep? You may be owed £100s
Scottish & Southern, Southern Electric, Atlantic & more will refund mis-sold customers
Doorstop energy mis-selling has been rife for years. Five of the big six firms have suspended such sales, regulator Ofgem is investigating and one big provider has agreed compensation. Full help in our Energy Mis-selling Compensation guide, here's a taster...
- 400,000 SSE doorstep customers may've been mis-sold. Huge provider Scottish & Southern Energy, which includes Scottish Hydro, Southern Electric, Swalec & Atlantic, will write to 400,000 switched on the doorstep between Oct 09 and July 11 to see if they were mis-sold.
Details are sketchy but wrong promises, such as "we're the cheapest" or "your direct debit will be lower" could qualify. Call its mis-selling hotline 0845 0707388 for help.
Did they lie? It's not just SSE. If you were unwittingly switched (eg, they forged your signature), were sold on false claims or even told Martin Lewis or Ofgem recommended the firm, you may be due cash. Complain to your supplier then, if rejected, the free Energy Ombudsman. Template letters in the Energy Mis-Selling guide & read an energy salesman's confession.
- "£150 back after ending up in debt." To inspire, MoneySaver Sarah says: "I switched to Npower via a door-to-door salesman, who claimed I could save. The direct debit was too low and we ended up £500 in debt. Following MSE's guide, I complained to Npower. It offered £150."
- Never switch at the doorstep or by cold call. Use the web. There are £100s of savings when switching to a better tariff. Use Consumer Focus-approved cross-market comparison sites. Top Comparison: Energyhelpline* pays £15 cashback per switch, whether gas, electricity or both. Dual Fuel: MoneySupermarket* £30, uSwitch* a crate of wine (cashback/freebies only via these links) and SimplySwitch* pays £40 cash.
