British Gas ends doorstep energy sales
British Gas has confirmed it is ending unsolicited doorstep sales for good.
In future, the energy giant promises to only visit a potential customer's home to talk about energy with their prior agreement, and at an agreed time.
British Gas announced in August it was suspending doorstep sales, pending a review.
The move brings a market-wide end to this irritating tactic for many consumers even closer. Doorstep salesman are often accused of mis-selling products with false promises of cheaper bills.
British Gas says feedback has shown a demand for face-to-face advice, but only on a customer's terms and without the pressure from an unannounced sales visit.
Lobby group Consumer Focus has called for an end to this type of cold calling, and suggested energy suppliers should instead offer appointments.
British Gas managing director for energy, Ian Peters, says: "There is still a very real demand for face-to-face energy advice among customers – as long as it's delivered at a time and place that's convenient for them."
