Vodafone's Voxi brand extends £10/mth mobile Sim deal to millions more households on benefits - but there ARE cheaper deals
Vodafone's Voxi brand has expanded who is eligible for its discounted mobile tariff to include those claiming disability living allowance (DLA) and personal independent payments (PIP). It means they can now get unlimited data, calls and texts for £10 a month. However, if you don't use a lot of data there are cheaper Sim deals on offer, so make sure you do your research first.
Below we explain how the new tariff works and how it compares. If you're in the market for a new mobile deal, use our Compare Cheap Sims tool.
Voxi's tariff is Sim-only and you can cancel penalty-free at any time
The "For Now" tariff from Voxi, which was launched in 2020, was initially only available to those on jobseeker's allowance, employment and support allowance, or employment-based universal credit. But now the eligibility criteria has been expanded to include anyone claiming these benefits, plus DLA and PIP too.
It's a Sim-only deal, so you don't need to buy a handset with Voxi and you can use it with your existing phone (so long as it's unlocked). Vodafone told us there are no restrictions on the amount of data you can use and there aren't any speed restrictions either.
There's no credit check to get it and the contract lasts for six months, though on a rolling one-month basis so you can cancel at any time penalty-free. When the six months ends you're moved onto a new tariff based on your age - these tariffs cost £10 a month but don't include unlimited data. We're checking if you can cancel these penalty-free once moved across and we'll update this story when we know more.
For a full breakdown of Voxi's deal, see our MSE News story published when the tariff first launched in November 2020.
If you aren't fussed about unlimited data, you can pick up a Sim-only deal for less than £4 a month
Currently no other mobile provider offers cheap 'social tariffs' for households on benfits, but we've asked all of the major providers if they have plans to launch one in future and we will update this story if so.
However, there are currently a host of Sim-only deals that are far cheaper than Voxi's deal, so if unlimited data isn't a requirement and you're happy with the handset you've got, see our Sim Only guide for the best deals. For example, you can currently get a Sim for £3.90 a month with Lebara that offers 1GB data, 300 minutes and unlimited texts. Lebara also offers 5GB and unlimited minutes and texts for the equivalent of £4.28 a month, while Talk Mobile offers 7GB and unlimited minutes and texts for the equivalent of £4.84 a month.
