Speedily protect your pocket this winter
Five snow-filled steps to cut energy bills

Hiya, there's already a bite in the air, so it's time to ensure you're sorted for the winter. Here are five key steps:

  • Get up to £3,500 of energy efficiency grants. There's wads of free cash around; to upgrade boilers, install loft & cavity wall insulation and more. Eg the Warm Front scheme has grants of up to £3,500 to help pensioners or those on low incomes. For this and many more, see the full Grant Grabbing guide.

  • Boiler cover £6/mth. Many vastly overpay by sticking with their energy supplier's policy; yet the two needn't be linked. There are hot deals out there right now; the easy way to them is via a comparison site such as uSwitch*, though check out Direct Line* too as it's not listed by comparison sites, and currently is 15% off. More info & cost cutting in the Cheapest Boiler Cover guide.

  • Up to £400 winter fuel payment for over 60s. Any household with someone aged 60+ by 27 Sept is entitled to winter fuel payments of £250 tax free (£400 for the over 80s). For full info see the Over 60s Winter Fuel Help MSE news story.

  • Cut gas & electricity bills by £250ish. While standard energy bills haven't moved, suppliers have fought a hidden price war launching special tariffs to top the comparison site charts - so switching pays. While the avg. bill's now c. £1,200 these are around £950.Top Pick Comparison (cashback specifically via these links): Energyhelpline* pays £15 cashback per switch. Dual Fuel Picks: MoneySup* £30 cashback, Uswitch* a case of wine, Simply Switch* £35 of Amazon/John Lewis vouchers. FULL info in the Cheap Gas & Elec guide.

  • Cut energy use. On top of obvious tips like use draft excluders and don't put the heat at full blast while wearing a T-shirt with the window open - the Energy Saving Trust's speedy energy check will give you a full assessment and action plan.

The just-launched Ulster Bank Pathway account pays 3.6% variable with easy access if you've £10,000 plus. This includes a six month 1% intro bonus, though even once that ends it could still be a reasonable, if not table topping, rate. MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Gwyneth let the older lady take the reduced steak?
Gwyneth is rummaging through the supermarket reduced section bargains and, as usual, there’s a bit of a scram for the cheapest goodies (get clearance food bargains online too see the Supermarket Shopping guide). QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q. How does MSE earn money to pay the team and run the site?

Martin's A: All guides & articles are solely written based on research about the best ways to save money. It's not just about best buys but also about how to use them to minimise cost and fight financial injustice.

After the 13 person editorial team and I finish with it, it goes to the 2-person marketing team, who try and find 'affiliated links' for those top picks ie. links that pay MSE if you click through and get a product.

If one's available we use it and put a * by it, if not we just use the non-paying link instead - whether it pays or not doesn't change what we write.

We try not to get these links from banks or product providers direct, to keep distance, but rather use links to the products provided by comparison sites or special affiliate websites.

I started the site debt-free for £100 (in Feb '03) and have only grown the team as the site's grown. Now the site's got 8m monthly users we have a big team of 25.

Much more detail on this in the how this site is financed page.
