Where the pound goes further
The top destinations where your cash buys more...

The pound is still low (£1 = €1.11 or $1.50) and some pundits predict it isn't going to get much better quickly, though no-one knows. So if you're planning an overseas holiday you need work out if it pays to book where the pound's stronger...

  • Are you an inny or outy? If you self-cater or go full board and stay in, focus on travel and board costs (often cheapest in the Eurozone) as spending's not likely to be too high. Those who go out and about spending need a 'cheap when you get there' destination.

  • Strongest purchasing power on arrival. Here's the price of a basket of goods inc beers, water & meals, which costs £72.14 in the UK (Brighton), compiled by the Post Office at today's exchange rates (it can vary by city too - this was priced at tourist resorts):

    Hungary (£37.40)
    Bulgaria (£39.52)
    Thailand (£42.31)
    Spain (£45.26)
    Bali (£52.51)
    Kenya (£52.60)

    Malaysia (£57.71)
    Croatia (£63.46)
    Greece (£64.02)
    Egypt (£65.45)
    USA (£75.70)
    Turkey (£76.08)

  • Book the cheapest deals. As ever with holidays, you can save £100s by paying as little as possible for everything, see the cheap flights, cheap hotels, cheap packages, cheap car hire guides for more.

  • Get the best currency deal on arrival. Use a special credit card to get by far the best rates. Overall winner Santander Zero is load-free worldwide with no ATM fees, though repay in full each month or it's 18.9% APR. Alternatively, Nationwide's* load-free Europe-only, but with the perk of a year's extra extended warranty & purchase protection on UK-bought electricals (16.9% APR). Full info in Cheapest Travel Cards guide. Alternatively, use the travel money comparison for best cash rates.

The Ones Not To Miss

Warning! BT price hike. Beat it & slash costs (inc £9.15 line rental)
From 1 April cheap eve rates start at 7 not 6pm & peak costs rise to 5.9p/MIN yet you can do it for 5p/CALL
Next week BT households see peak time calls jump from 5.4p/min to 5.9p/min and peak hours change from 6am-6pm to 7am-7pm, so the new higher rate lasts an extra evening hour too - in June TalkTalk will follow suit. So we've completely rewritten our cost cutting guide including... Cut costs without switching: Easily save with social tariffs, paying by direct debit, or just hang-up & redial before 60 mins to keep free calls free. Cheapest line rental £9.15/mth: BT's standard is £11.54/mth yet for £9.15/mth you can get Primus' Home Saver package which includes eve & weekend calls if you sign up via comparison site Homephonechoices* and there're rumours it could get even cheaper. With broadband: Using Primus for line rental and Plusnet* at £6/mth for broadband, at a total £15/month, far undercuts any bundle. 5p/CALL daytimes: Sign up to a no-frills provider like 18185 for much cheaper calls daytimes & to mobiles just by dialling its prefix number, eg. it's 5p/CALL to landlines daytimes, BT's 5.9p/min. How to get a bank account - tips for the unbanked
Govt says all should have one - banks say everyone can - help us find out the truth
Up to 1.75m UK adults dont have bank accounts, hitting their ability to find work and pay bills. In today's Budget the Govt will promise legislation to force banks to give everyone access to an account (election permitting), but the BBA, the banks' trade body says: "Everybody can have a bank account if they want one, unless (and this is rare) the law says they can't."  The Basic Bank Account Myth: To stave off legislation on this in the past most banks introduced ‘basic bank accounts' which offer no overdrafts yet many people have told us when they say ‘I've a terrible credit score, can I open an account?' they're given normal bank account application forms and are thus rejected and allowed to leave unbanked. Only those specifically asking for basic bank accounts are given the right forms and even then some are rejected. Help us test this: To build more systematic evidence, if you're unbanked, we've written a series of tips for getting a bank account and we'd like your feedback bank by bank. Forum Note: Getting an account  Related: Best Bank Accounts (for those with decent credit scores)

Last Chance! Lock-in Direct Line car & home insurance discounts
Its promo deals may be ending, but get a quote now and it lasts 90 days so you can lock-in at that price
In a week, competitive insurer Direct Line's due to close its '12 mths for the price of 9' (ie. 25% off) home insurance* and, not too long after, its '52 days free’ (14% off) car insurance* promos. Yet as quotes last 3mths, get one now even if you're not at renewal just in case it's cheapest (if it launches a better promo you can always requote). Don't assume it's cheapest: Don't read this as 'get Direct Line', it's merely 'bag a quote in case it's cheap'. No one insurer's cheapest for all, so the best route's to get as many quotes as possible, the easiest way is combining as many comparison sites as possible (though they don't include Direct Line) in the following order: Car Insurance: GoCompare*, MSP*, BTQ*, MoneyExpert* Home Insurance: GoCompare*, MSP*, Confused*, CompareTM*. Once you've found your cheapest, look for hidden cashback deals. FULL info on all that in the Updated Guides: Cheap Car Insurance, Cheap Home Insurance Related Insurance Guides: Van, Motorbike, Travel, Boiler

New top balance transfer - 0% for 15 mths (2.9% fee)
New best buy for shifting debt short term (the previous top has cut its 0% length)
Now Virgin's dropped its 0% for 16mths offer to 14mths, there's a new top pick (all are new customer only and subject to credit score)... 15 months 0%: The cheapest deal available to all is now Barclaycard's* 15 months 0% for a one-off 2.9% fee though either clear it within this time or shift the debts again else it'll jump to 15.9% APR. Alternative 0% for 15 mths. If you have their bank accounts, HSBC*, Natwest* and RBS* also offer 15 mths 0% on debt shifted, again with one-off fees of 2.9% (up to 16.9% APR after) as does Santander though its fee's a higher 3% (15.9% APR after). Lock-in for the long term: If you can't repay the debt within the 0% period, and don't want to keep switching cards or don't have the credit score, MBNA Platinum's* the cheapest long term debt for most letting you lock in at 6.7% 'for life' meaning until all the debt shifted is repaid. Yet take over 4 years and MBNA's Rate for Life works out slightly cheaper at 5.9% 'for life' with a 1.5% fee. How much pocket money do you give? 25% give nothing! 10,998 voted.
Quite a variety this week; 25% of parents to under 18s don't regularly give any pocket money. If they get any, the average weekly treat for under 12s is £3.30, while 12-18 year olds get an impressive £9.50. If 12-18s have to buy their own clothes (only 18% do), then they fare even better, getting an average £19.77/week! See the pocket money poll results

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q. We both have nearly £44,000 in an instant access Cash ISA, add next year's in and we'll top the safety limit.  You said you can only pay in to one ISA each year. Does that mean we could have opened other new accounts offering better interest & still keep money tax free in the others, provided we don't put cash in it?  Brenda Thorne

Martin's A:  In a word: YES. Let's tackle safety first, the UK Govt only protects you £50,000 per person per financial institution for savings – and that includes ISAs. Yet with the small yearly amount you can put in, it's only now some people are close to hitting the limit for the first time.

As for the rest of your question, you can't open more than one ISA in any individual year, but you can have each different tax years ISAs with a separate provider, and they all stay tax free year after year.  For those who haven't done this year's yet you can get 3.5% cash ISAs, and for your old ISA see the top cash ISA transfers to up the rate.
