£150 netbook, Free pocket travel guide, 20% off New Look, £15 off flights

Stop Press! Earn 7.9% on your savings
19 year inflation high means RPI-linked savings pay huge amounts

A rise in inflation (the rate prices rise) isn't generally good news, and the just announced April RPI shows a 19 year high of 5.3%. Yet savers can take advantage to earn huge rates for the current climate...

  • Basic rate taxpayers earn equiv of 7.9%. NS&I, the government run bank's index-linked savings pays RPI + 1% tax-free, so that's 6.3% at current rates (see warning below). To earn that in normal savings a basic rate taxpayer would need 7.9% pre-tax (higher rate 10.5%, top rate 12.6%), over double the standard best buy.

  • You're meant to lock the cash away. You can put up to £15,000 in, locked away for 3 or 5 years. However, after a year, for a small interest penalty you can access your cash - though don't do this if you may need access sooner. For full details see Inflation linked savings guide.

  • Warning - the rate varies. The rate earned varies each month with inflation and while some predict it'll be reasonably high going forward, that's not guaranteed.

Last year inflation was negative. If that happens again, then you simply earn the fixed interest part (i.e. 1% over the three years). Still, for it not to beat other savings over the next year (the first time you can get money out) we'd need to see a massive, though not impossible, inflation drop.

If gambling on inflation's rollercoaster isn't suitable for you, see the best buy savings deals below (we were going to report those anyway, so adding this is the icing on the cake in what's become a savings special). Or read the full Top Savings guide.

New Top Savings: 3% Easy Access or 5% Regular Saver
Substantially boost your interest as two new market leading deals are launched
A panoply of new deals have jumped straight into the best buys. Top 3% easy access (by mail): The new Coventry BS* 1st Class Postal account (min £1,000) pays 3% AER variable incl. a year's 1% intro bonus. Yet you must operate it by post and if you make 5+ withdrawals there are minor penalties. Top 2.6-2.8% clean (online): Unusually, the easy access 2.6% AER variable (2.8% for its bank account holders) Halifax* Websaver extra (min £1) isn't artificially boosted by short-term bonuses. The only slight catch is make 2+ annual withdrawals and you lose 30 days interest, but only on the amount withdrawn. Top with bonus, easy access: The AA's Internet Extra (min £1) pays 2.8% AER variable but most is from a massive 2.3% year long intro bonus, after that it'll plummet so be ready to ditch & switch; alternatively Tesco* (min £1) is 2.75% AER with a smaller 1.5% year's bonus. Top 5% regular saver (branch): You can get 5% AER fixed but on just a small amount, as you can only put £1 to £250 in every month for just over a year - after that it transfers to standard account paying the base rate (currently 0.5%) so ditch it then. You can withdraw cash and miss payments without penalties: to open one go to a Northern Rock branch. Cheap travel spending card: apply now & save 6%+ on everything
If you're heading abroad this summer, get the right plastic now to keep costs low
Using a specialist credit card abroad saves you 6%+ compared to many debit cards or getting cash. Yet to get a card takes time, and one provider's already withdrawn online applications. Why they're cheap: Most cards add a 3%-ish load to exchange rates, so spend £100 of Euros and you pay £103. These are load-free worldwide, so you get the best possible rate and their other fees are lower too. Yet set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month to minimise interest or the APRs are up to 18.9%. Top Card (over 50s): Saga's* only fee is 2% on cash withdrawals and it doesn't charge interest on them. Top Cards: While Santander Zero just pips the Post Office*, only its bank & mortgage customers can now apply online. Both charge interest on ATM withdrawals (27.9% & 24.1%) though repay in full and over a month that's only c. £1.80 per £100, but the Post Office adds a 2.5% fee. Top Card with Perks: While only load-free in Europe (a low 1% elsewhere) Nationwide* also gives a year's extended warranty & purchase protection if you pay for UK-bought electricals with it. The cash withdrawal fee is 2.5% plus 27.9% interest even if repaid in full. New top 0% credit cards - slash debt costs
Plastic war! New 0% for 15 mths balance transfers or 12 mths 0% on new spending
A deck of best-buy new cardholder deals launched this week (as always they require a credit check). Shift Existing Debts: Now anyone can balance transfer to Natwest* at 0% for 15 mths with a 2.9% fee (it used to be only for its bank customers). It's a month shorter than Yorkshire Bank's deal, but that has a slightly higher 3% fee & could be tougher for some to get. With both cards, clear the debt in full before the 0% deal ends or shift it again or else the rates jump to 16.9% & 11.3% APR. New borrowing 0% for 12 mths: Two cards already do this with perks... Tesco* gives Clubcard rewards points on spending and Virgin* also allows 12 mths 0% balance transfers for a 2.98% fee. The newbie's Barclaycard's Platinum though the only perk's its fairly limited Freedom rewards. Again, ensure you repay or shift by the time the 0% deal ends or the rate jumps to 15.9%-18.9% APR. Warning: Make at least the min repayment or you can lose these deals, and never borrow willy-nilly to supplement income. Only do it for planned, budgeted for, affordable, specific purchases. FULL info, pros cons & pitfalls in the Updated Guide: Balance Transfers, 0% Cards, All-rounder cards. Related: Credit Ratings, Debt Help

New Guide! Get mobile apps without an iPhone
Whether it's language learning, Cluedo, tube maps or other free applications
The app store is the iPhone's killer function that blew away the competition (see Cheap iPhones), yet now other providers are fighting back with their own app stores. What type of phone do you have? Most modern multi-function phones with email & web access have the ability to download apps. One of the widest ranges is available for phones that work on the Google Android system, but if you've a Windows mobile, modern Nokia, Blackberry or Palm you can probably get apps too. What apps are available? Whether it's paid for big-name games like Call of Duty or Monopoly, or free apps for weather forecasting, first aid, instant messaging, personalised radio, easy newspaper reading, metric converters, or more, someone's built an app. FULL step-by-step help and free apps list for each phone in the New Guide: Mobile Phone Apps Related: Cheap Mobiles, Sell Old Mobiles, Cheapest iPhone

Money Moral Dilema
Real life MONEY MORAL DILEMMA:
Should I lunch with work mates?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I work as part of a newly formed team; my boss, four other girls and me. My boss thinks he is very "cool" and wants us all to "bond" so often suggests we go out for lunch (at our expense). The other girls are fine, but I don't really want to be best buddies with them, and they always choose somewhere expensive and I resent having to pay when I don't enjoy it. Should I tell my boss and risk looking bad or grin and bear it? Enter the Money Moral Maze: Should I lunch with work mates? Previous MMDs: View All Suggest: A Money Moral Dilemma

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q. I'm booking my honeymoon for April 2011 but my wedding's Easter weekend & school holidays. Should I book now or last minute for the best deal? Sandy, by email

Martin's A: Congrats on the wedding. The answer depends on what you're trying to do. If you're booking a scheduled airline flight then early tends to be cheapest (see Cheap Flights) though as it's so early, I'd monitor airlines sales to see if you can get a discount (or see credit card free flights).

However, if you're getting a package last minute is far cheaper, yet that means limited choice and flexibility so there is a balance. Yet if you're not going to book last minute, book early to get the early booking discount - though do remember to haggle, see the Cheap Package Holidays guide.
