Martin's Quick Briefing

Warning! Beat 40% travel insurance hikes
Get annual cover now from £14 or £25 with winter sports!

Axa is planning "double digit" pre-Chrimbo rises & specialist PJ Hayman forecasts 40% hikes for some cheaper policies (see travel hikes news). So consider bagging an annual policy now, in case it happens.

  • Free EHIC cards. The European Health Insurance Card entitles holders to medical treatment in state-run EU hospitals at the same cost as a local. So if it's free for them it's free for you, though it's not a substitute for travel insurance, see the Free EHIC Card guide.

  • £14 annual travel cover. Go away more than 2-3 times (inc. weekends) and annual cover wins. Some include basic skiing and snowboarding cover, though go off-piste or use expensive equipment and specialist cover's better.

These picks are primarily based on price - so there's little feedback on their payout history.

(Links go via Moneysupermarket comparison when cheaper than direct)

Lowest cost annual policies (under 50s) (see over 50s options)
    Europe: Multitrip* £14 singles, £25 family/couple
    Worldwide: Virgin* £23 single, Insurefor* £41 family/couple

    With winter sports cover
Europe: Virgin* £25 singles, Multitrip* £40 families
Worldwide: Virgin* £35 singles, Insurefor* £54 families

  • 'Top value' annual policies - good track record. The analysis includes price, cover levels and track record (from insurance raters Defaqto) - Direct Travel* is £52 worldwide for singles and £75 families. Alternatively for Europe cover* the link goes via Moneysup as it's cheaper than direct. Winter sports add-ons are available.

  • Free or £5 cover! Switch to Co-op's* Privilege Premier current account by 15 Jan and it includes free family worldwide cover as the £13/mth fee is waived for a year (switch to a non-fee account after). Alternatively, Sainsbury's* Gold credit card charges £5/mth, has worldwide family cover, and you can cancel whenever you want (see Sainsbury's Card news for more).

'I got £435 for gold I'd not worn in 15 years'
Need notes for Xmas? Cash in old jewellery the right way. Top legit gold sites

We've all heard nightmares about 'sell your gold' sites, so earlier this year MSE Jenny started a detailed investigation into how to do it right. We it published in the summer, and since successes have flooded in. What can you sell? Old gold you've no use for: broken chains, odd earrings, old crowns etc. What not to sell? Avoid jewellery with gemstones, designer jewellery or medals; you only get the raw gold price so are throwing away the massive added value - you can get more elsewhere. Successes so far: Lots reported in the forum, including Churchmouse:"I had jewellery I'd not worn in 15 years, sent it in and got £435 in my bank account" and Trix: "I sent an assortment of 9ct gold odd earrings, broken chains and bracelets - just cheap in the first place so not worth the fixing cost - and got £168". Who to sell to: Postal gold websites seem great. Accept their price and they send a jiffy bag for you to post back. Yet while their headline prices are great, send shiny stuff in and they say it's worth a fraction of this. So we've sorted the gold from the glitter, finding sites that usually honour prices, with strong feedback. See the Step-by-Step Guide: Top Gold Selling Sites Related Guides: Boost Your Income, Survey Sites, Comping For Cash

Another new top 0% balance transfer
Mini-price war! Now get 16 months on existing debts with a lower 2.88% fee

It's the price war of 1,000 tiny cuts.  MBNA's shaved its rates down again to regain top spot for 0% credit card debt shifting.  Frankly we know it does it in the hope we'll tell you about it - yet if it cuts your costs, why not?  0% for 16mth deals: MBNA Plat Plus* is still 0% for 16mths, yet the one-off fee's been cut to 2.88% and the APR to 16.7% (that's the rate you pay after the 0% so always repay in full or shift again to avoid this).  Just behind is Virgin* with a smidgeon higher 2.89% fee (18.9% APR) and Barclaycard Platinum* at 2.9% fee (16.9% APR).  Who's this for? It's for new cardholders only, plus you must pass a credit check to get cards. While Virgin & MBNA are sister companies, they may allow you to have both cards, but you can't balance transfer from one to the other. 6.8% long-term: Need longer to repay or worry you won't be bothered to switch again? Use a card with a low standard APR such as Barclaycard Simplicity's* 6.8%.  The rate isn't fixed, but the regulations let you refuse any rate rise, provided you don't borrow more after. Don't miss repayments: Always make at least the min. monthly repayments or you can lose promo rates and your rights. Money Moral Dilemma

Real Life MONEY MORAL DILEMMA:
Should we keep the Merlot?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
We received our weekly grocery delivery this evening from a leading supermarket. My husband accepted it, and when I checked later I discovered we'd received 6 bottles of Merlot wine worth over £40 we hadn't ordered (or been charged for). I called customer services and was on hold for over 30 mins before giving up. Should I persevere and ring again another day, tell the delivery driver next week or keep quiet and consider it an early Christmas present? Enter the Money Moral Maze: Should we keep the Merlot? Question Of The Week

MoneySaving Polls

Q. Can banks move money between my accounts without expressed permission? Liz, E-mail

MSE Sunny's A: Outrageously, banks are entirely within their rights to take money from savings to pay off overdue debts on credit cards, loans or unauthorised overdrafts. They don't need to ask you, or tell you beforehand.

It's called 'setting off' and it's an ancient right that doesn't even need to be explicitly stated in a bank's terms and conditions. It's usually done when you're in financial hardship and can make it extremely difficult to manage your money e.g. cash you've put aside to pay priority mortgage debts gets used to clear non-priority card debts.

We've lobbied ferociously against this practice and the FSA has attempted to crackdown on this behaviour (see FSA crackdown news) although it still happens. If you think you may be faced with this, the best thing to do is move your savings to a separate institution to the one your debts are with. Full help in the Setting Off guide.

This week's poll:

Would you re-nationalise the energy companies?

Last week's poll result:

What counts as child poverty in the UK?

A full 96% percent of you concurred that a lack of food, shelter or clothing is a good indicator of child poverty, but just 9% consider those lacking a laptop and internet access to be in the same category.
