Martin's Quick Briefing

Get £125 FREE cash in bank price war
Take advantage of banks trying to bribe you to switch

Five big banks are now flinging out cash in a scrap to win your current account custom. So why not grab it? Here are the ten things you need to know.

1. They do most of the work for you. Bank switching services automatically move over direct debits and standing orders from your old account. But you must inform those paying in (eg, employer). For safety, keep the old account open for a few months after, with a small amount in it.
2. gymsYou must pay your income in. These accounts require you to pass a credit check and pay in a set minimum monthly deposit. This is just a way of getting you to pay your regular income in. Eg, £1,000/month is a £14,200 salary after tax. Those willing to play who earn under a threshold can beat this. Eg, if you earn £800 after tax a month, each month instantly take out £200 then redeposit it.
3-7.

The top 5 fee-free current account deals

They're listed in min salary order, yet scan all to pick your best.

Min salary £23,100 (pay in £1,500/mth)

Free £125, top customer service, 0% overdraft, 8% linked savings
Sign up to First Direct's* 1st account via this Moneysup link and you get £125 within 4 mths. It's been top of every customer service poll we've done, has a 0% overdraft on up to £250 and a linked 8% regular savings account.

Interest: No. Overdraft: 0% to £250, 15.9% AER above

Min salary £14,200 (pay in £1,000/mth)

Santander: Free £100, 0% o/draft, 5% interest, 5% linked savings
Santander's* Preferred account gives a £100 bonus after 14 wks. In year one, it's got a 0% overdraft and 5% in-credit interest on up to £2,500 and access to its a 5% Regular Saver. Yet it's been bottom in every customer service poll.

Interest: 5% yr 1 up to £2.5k, 1% after. Overdraft: 0% y1, 50p/day, max £5/mth

Halifax: Free £100 plus £5 per month.
A strong longer term contender, the Halifax Reward account gives a £100 bonus on the day the switch starts, plus £5 each month. Never go overdrawn though or it's £1 a day, and its customer service rating isn't hot though.

Interest: No. Overdraft: £1 per day charge

Min salary £9,800 (pay in £750/mth)

Free Europe travel insurance for up to 75s
New and existing Nationwide* FlexAccount customers get free European travel insurance (up to age 75) and well-rated customer service.

Interest: No. Overdraft: 18.9%

Min salary £6,050 (pay in £500/mth)

6% interest for a year, 4% linked savings, 0% overdraft
New or existing HSBC* Bank Account customers who haven't used its switching service get 6% in-credit interest on up to £2,500 for a year and access to its 4% AER Regular Saver. Plus it offers a year's 0% overdraft.

Interest: 5% yr 1 up to £2.5k, 0% after. Overdraft: 0% for 12 mths (19.9% after)

8. Beware bank charges. Go over your overdraft limit and the charges are massive, up to £35 a pop. In this situation debit cards become costlier than credit cards, so always monitor how much you've got to prevent this. See bank charges compared and reclaim unfair bank charges for more.
9. Pay a fee for your bank? You could reclaim £100s. Many banks flog packaged accounts for up to £25/month promising perks such as mobile insurance and breakdown cover. Calculate the annual cost (eg, £300) and see if you can buy the perks elsewhere cheaper. Some can, so will save serious cash downgrading, though for others it is worth it (new guide coming soon).

Plus, the FSA's said many fee-charging accounts were mis-sold. See our Reclaim mis-sold packaged bank accounts news story.
10. What if you can't get a bank account? Sadly, over 1m in the UK don't have a bank account. If you've had issues, forget the deals above, and ask for a 'basic bank account'. You'll need ID and proof of address, though you shouldn't be credit checked. Full help in the Basic Bank Accounts guide.

New Year's Money Makeover Special

11 Jan 2012

Gym membership from £10/month
Join the gym without losing pounds... erm, sorry, without gaining, erm. Oh, you know what we mean
Like leftover Christmas turkey, many gym goers fade fast. Never think a gym costs £50/month, if you're locked in for a year's contract, see it as a £600 bill. To help, we've a new Free or Cheap Gyms guide to slimming costs, here's a taster...

  • gymsFree passes for up to 7 days — to try or just use free spa. Never join a gym before seeing if it fits. To help, we've blagged free 7-day Fitness First passes (for new & past customers), plus 3 days at LA Fitness, free British Military Fit trials and more. See Free Gym Passes
  • No-frills gyms from £10/month If you can forget saunas, jacuzzis and fit gym instructors, there's been an explosion in no-frills gyms. Prices are usually £10-£20/ mth, you can often cancel any time and MoneySavers' feedback is hugely positive. Also included are cheap 'n' cheerful local council leisure centres.
  • First time gym user? Be honest with yourself. If you're podgy with a beer belly and surging with good first-time fitness intention, there's a decent chance your enthusiasm may wane, so a year's costly contract will only lose pounds from your wallet. Better initially to use a short-contract membership even if you pay slightly more per use/month until you're sure you'll stick. Eg, a 2 week Fitness First pass for £20 or Harpers £15.
  • Signing a contract — what to watch for. If you're signing up for a year, remember sales staff often work on commission. So if their slick patter says, "If you're ill you can freeze membership, or take a holiday", ask to see it in the contract. If they say "it's not there but it's fine", make contemporaneous notes there, which have legal weight and, if possible, get them to sign to show it. See gym contract help and gym contract rights.

New. Super low fee 0% balance transfer
Shift debts for less | 0% for 13 months, 1% fee | 6.9% for life fee-free | 0% for 24 months, 3.2% fee

A balance transfer deal lets you shift existing debts at a much cheaper rate. Last week, we listed the longest 0% deals, now a new super low fee card's launched; a big winner if you can repay quickly. All cards require a credit check.

  • balance transferNew. 0% for 13 months with low 1% fee. New Natwest* or RBS* cardholders now get 0% for 13 months for a one-off 1% fee of amount transferred. Clear the debts by then and it saves c. £20 per £1,000 over longer 0% deals. If you need a little longer Barclaycard* is 0% for 16 months at a higher 1.6% fee. Repay in full (or shift again) before the 0% ends or they're 17.9% or 18.9% representative APR, respectively.
  • 24 months' 0% with 3.2% fee. If you need longer to repay, at two years' 0% (3.2% fee) a different Barclaycard* is the longest 0% we've ever seen. Existing Barclaycard holders can go for Halifax* at 22 months' 0% (3.5% fee) or Virgin* 20 months 0% (2.99% fee). Repay in full (or shift again) before the 0% ends or they jump to 17.9%, 17.9% and 18.9% representative APR.
  • Lock in 6.9% for life of balance NO FEE. If you need longer to repay (3-4yrs+) the Sainsbury's* card lets you shift debts to it at 6.9% APR with no fee. Yet this is a 'representative' APR, so only 51% of accepted applicants must get the 6.9%, others may pay more. While technically it's a variable rate, regulations mean you're effectively locking in, as provided you don't miss payments, you've a right to reject increases if you agree not to borrow more. See Rate Jacking rules.

The cards' low rates are usually only for shifted debts, so avoid new spending. Always pay at least min. monthly repayment on time or you may lose the 0%. Full help in the Updated Guide: 0% Balance Transfers Related: Cheap Loans, 0% Cards

Cheap package holidays, eg, a week in Greece £229 per person
Get up to 10% off summer 2012 deals in the sales | 4-star Spain £301pp

Don't assume DIY flights and hotels on the web win. Travel agents sometimes smash these prices, especially if you're going away for 7, 10 or 14-days to traditional holiday resorts. Here's a taster of our full Cheap Package Holidays guide...

  • holiday discountsIf you can't book late, book early. With packages, booking within two months of the holiday is cheapest, as tour operators try to flog excess capacity. To take advantage, you must be super-flexible. If not eg, you need children's facilities or a specific hotel, instead grab early discounts; there are lots around now for summer. Current discounts incl £100 off per family or 40% off long-haul, see full Summer 2012 holiday sales.
  • Don't accept the first price — haggle to save £100s. Tour operators make holidays, travel agents sell 'em, so many big tour operators' holidays are sold by multiple agents. Once you've found your trip, get ALL the details, then haggle. Ring a few agents to see who'll sell it to you cheapest. You can often cut up to 10% more on late deals, and a little less on earlier bookings. Savings can be £100s, see the full holiday haggling tips.
  • Proof. Sub-£300 weeks in the sun. We spent half an hour calling and discovered these corking deals: a week 4-star Menorca self-catering £248; 4-star all-inclusive Egypt holiday for £260pp; Tunisia 3-star half-board £286pp.
  • Avoid costly travel insurance - get a year's for £17. Agents often try to sell insurance yet it can be costly. Compare it to the following (via Moneysup as it's cheaper than direct) Annual: Virgin*: £17 individuals (£26 winter sports), £31 families. Single trip: Debenhams*: £10 individuals, £20 families (incl winter sports). Full best-buys, info & warnings: Cheap Travel insurance

This week's poll: Should people need to sell their home for long term care?

Last week's poll result

It's a highly emotive issue. When the elderly need to go into long-term supported care, should they be forced to sell their home to raise the cash or should it be protected and the taxpayer pay the bill?

We've kept this as simple and stark a choice as possible:

People's homes should be protected, the taxpayer should pay

Vote

If people have assets including homes, they should pay for it

Vote

Are you a financial optimist for 2012?

Of the over 15,000 of you who voted 50% thought your situation would get worse this year, 23% the same and 27% better. That’s slightly more pessimistic than last year when 49% expected it to get worse, and 33% better.

Worth noting too, the better your finances now, the more optimistic you were. See the financial optimist 2012 poll results and 2011.

Question of the week

Board of the week

Q: I recently bought an Amazon used iPod thinking it had a 3-month guarantee, but it went dead. Amazon said as I bought it from a 'Marketplace Seller' it couldn't help. I don't understand, I went to Amazon and paid it. What can I do to get my money back? Penny, by email.

MSE Andrea's A: Amazon Marketplace is Amazon's equivalent of eBay, meaning you've bought something from a member of the public or a trader. If its a trader you have sad fart rights as normal, but if it's a member of the public, the only rule is it should be 'as described'.

If you paid through Amazon it has its A to Z Guarantee (the person you emailed should've told you that) which works if you bought it less than 3 months ago, where you tell Amazon the claim reason and explain what happened.

It's worth being aware when buying from Amazon there's a big difference between its sales and third party sales.
