Build-A-Bear logoBuild-A-Bear 2 toys?Via 12 off voucher

2 days left

On Thu 12 Jul, there were chaotic scenes in the Build-A-Bear Workshops, with stores being so busy during its 'pay your age' day promotion, people were left queueing for hours and others turned away. See the MSE news story on this for full info.

Build-A-Bear has told us that to say sorry for this, it's issuing all of its UK Build-A-Bear Bonus Club members a £12 off voucher to spend in stores. All you need to do is log into your account, or create a new one, by 11.59 pm on Wed 18 Jul to get your voucher. You've got until Fri 31 Aug to use it.

The voucher can be used in stores only and on the Make-Your-Own bears. We've asked Build-A-Bear for a price list and we're yet to hear back from it on this, however when we checked in the store closest to MSE Towers, the cheapest bear we found was £14, meaning you could get a bear for £2. Unlike the previous promotion, children do not need to attend the store to get the deal.

MSE Laura picked up this bunny on Fri 13 Jul for £2 using the voucher

Once you've logged into your account and got your voucher, you have until Fri 31 Aug to use it, so there's no rush to head to a store.

We've seen bears available for less than £14 online (which aren't online exclusives), but when we checked in our local store they didn't have these in stock. We've asked Build-A-Bear if you'd get the bear for free using the voucher if it cost £12 or less, but it hasn't given us an answer on that yet. We'll update you hear when we hear back.

However it does say in the T&Cs on the voucher there's "no cash return for purchases under the value of voucher", so we reckon you'd be able to get one for free. Although it's probably best to check first before getting your bear stuffed. It's one voucher per transaction. See 'more info' below for more T&Cs.

More info

The voucher can be used on any of the Make-Your-Own bears that are stocked in stores, excluding Barbie, Hot Wheels, KABU, Power Rangers, Peter Rabbit and Jumbo bears. It also can't be used on clothing, accessories, sounds or scents - you'll have to pay extra for these.

Build-A-Bear logoBuild-A-Bear 'pay your age' for a 20ish teddyEg, 3-yr-olds pay 3. In stores this Thursday

MSE Update 9.30am Fri 13 Jul: Due to the excessive crowding and long queues outside its stores on Thu 12 Jul, Build-A-Bear had to stop accepting customers part way through its 'Pay Your Age Day' promotion, causing widespread disappointment.

It’s since issued a £12 off voucher to everyone who's joined its Bonus Club loyalty scheme. To get the voucher, log into your account by 11.59pm on Wed 18 Jul.

For the full story, see Build-A-Bear stuffs up 'pay your age' offer.

On Thu 12 Jul, Build-A-Bear Workshop is running a 'Pay Your Age Day' promotion where you can make a bear (norm around £20ish) and pay just your age in pounds, eg, 3-year-olds get a bear for £3. To get this offer, you need to be signed up to its free Bonus Club loyalty scheme, which you can either do online in advance or in store on the day.

Kids will need to be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over to claim their bear, and you can only pay someone else’s age (ie, your kid’s age) if they’re with you in person at the time of purchase. Though this isn’t just for kids - adults can also use the offer and pay a maximum of £25 for a bear, even if they’re much older than 25.

Build-A-Bear told us that no proof of age is needed for either children or adults – it’s all being done on trust - but you might be told to get stuffed if you try telling them your 12-year-old is six.

What bear can I get and how much are they normally?

The offer applies to any of the Make-Your-Own bears that are available in each store, including Pokémon, Star Wars, Marvel etc.

Build-A-Bear says prices and stock will vary between stores, but when we looked in the store nearest MSE Towers, the cheapest Make-Your-Own bear we saw was £14 and the most expensive was £27.

However, it's only the bears themselves that are included in this offer. You'd need to pay for any clothing, accessories, sounds or scents you choose to add. If your child's under one, you'll pay £1.

For full T&Cs, see Build-A-Bear's FAQ page.

Section 75

Free protection for all shopping!

There's a little-known piece of legislation that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. 'Section 75' of the Consumer Credit Act means your plastic must protect anything you buy for more than £100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust, you can still get your money back.

And although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards, there is something else to fall back on if you've paid using a debit card, or used a credit card for a purchase under £100. Known as Chargeback, this is part of banks' and card companies' internal rules and not a legal requirement. Read full details of Section 75 or Chargeback, plus how to claim, in our guides.
