MSE Update 4.30pm, Fri 27 Feb: We've had reports users who didn't win the 12 month membership were offered a discount voucher rather than the two-month membership they should have been given. This was an error. We got in touch with Gourmet Society and it has confirmed you will receive your two months' free membership.

We would like to make it clear that any reference to MSE or MoneySavers in connection with a discount voucher was done completely without our knowledge. We are currently in discussions with Gourmet Society about this. If you did get this deal, remember to cancel before the 12 months are up or you will be AUTOMATICALLY charged for a full-price one year membership (currently £69.95).

Gourmet Society has sent an email to those affected to confirm how to access the free two-month membership.

If you love eating out, sign up via this MSE Blagged special Gourmet Society Card* link before 11.59pm on Tue 17 Feb and you'll enter a random ballot where 2,500 MSE users will be given a totally free full year's membership (norm £69.95). Those who don't get picked will be given a free two-month membership instead.

When registering you can select membership on a physical card, or on the Gourmet Society app which works on iPhones, Android and Windows smartphones. However, all the 12-month membership winners will be given a physical card.

Anyone can enter but there’s only one allowed per household. You don’t need to enter any bank details and membership will automatically expire after two months or a year (depending on which one you get), so there's no need to actively cancel it.

You'll be notified via email by Tue 24 Feb on whether you got a two or 12-month membership. Cards will be sent within 28 days, those with the app can access membership immediately.

Never heard of Gourmet Society before?

It's a members-only dining club, which works very much like Tastecard, getting you 2for1 meals, 50% off food or 25% off the total bill including drinks at over 6,500 restaurants, including La Tasca, Strada, Prezzo, plus loads of independent eateries.

Availability varies - some restaurants won't accept it on certain days of the week (eg, Fri or Sat nights) and on special occasions or certain months, plus there may be a limit to the number of people per table. All this info can be found on the restaurants' individual Gourmet Society page once you're logged in.

  There's unlimited app memberships available, however a limit of up to 100,000 physical cards for the two-month membership.
  
  Before dining, check online to see if you have to book in advance. If so, make sure you quote your Gourmet Society membership. You'll then need to show it at the restaurant (either card or smartphone app). It’s worth checking out what other discount codes and vouchers are available before you go as they could work out better than using your Gourmet Society card.
  
  If you're having a card sent to you, Gourmet Society’s confirmed it will start from when you receive it, not when you signed up. You'll be emailed once it expires to see if you want to continue.

MSE update Tue 7 Jan: Gourmet Society says a massive 20,000 people have already signed up for the two-month trial since we told you about it in last week's email. Remember, 2,014 of these memberships will be randomly upgraded to 12 months (usually £70), so if you haven't already, be sure to register by this Friday (10 Jan) for your chance to get one.

If you're lucky enough to be upgraded, Gourmet Society will let you know on Mon 13 Jan or shortly after, so keep an eye on your inbox next week.

We've blagged EVERYONE a free two-month membership to dining club Gourmet Society. What's more, 2,014 users will be upgraded to a free ONE YEAR membership, usually £69.95. It gets 2for1 mains or 25% off the total bill at over 6,000 restaurants, including La Tasca, Strada, Prezzo, plus loads of independent eateries.

You can either get a physical card, or you can download the Gourmet app for iPhones, Android plus some Windows and Blackberry phones. You don't need to enter any bank details, just basic info.

Last year, Gourmet Society gave the 2,013 free 12-month cards on a first-come, first-served basis, but as its site crashed due to the rush to sign up, it's decided to randomly select 2,014 users this year. To be fair to all MoneySavers, you can register for your free two-month trial until Fri 10 Jan.

There's a little-known piece of legislation that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. 'Section 75' of the Consumer Credit Act means your plastic must protect anything you buy for more than £100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust, you can still get your money back.

And although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards, there is something else to fall back on if you've paid using a debit card, or used a credit card for a purchase under £100.
