HSBC to shut 114 branches next year – here's the full list, plus alternatives

HSBC has announced another round of bank branch closures, with 114 more outlets set to shut between April and September next year. The move is on top of the closure of 69 branches earlier this year. Below we list the branches disappearing and what the alternatives are if you still want face-to-face banking.

HSBC is not the only bank shutting branches. NatWest has announced it will shut a further 43 branches in 2023, while Lloyds Banking Group is to shut 85 Lloyds Bank and 32 Halifax branches by the end of this year. TSB has already closed 70 branches this year.

Alternative ways to bank face-to-face with HSBC

If your local branch is closing, here are some practical alternatives:

You can access some HSBC services via the Post Office

HSBC customers can access certain services from any of the Post Office's 11,400 branches. Use the Post Office's branch finder tool to locate your nearest. Services available include the following:

  • Cash/cheque deposits.
  • Checking your balance.
  • Withdrawing money.

See if there's an HSBC 'community event' near you

HSBC runs education and support 'community pop up events' in selected local areas across the UK. The bank says it has 350 of these events planned for 2023. You can check if a nearby town is covered on HSBC's website.

At the events, you can speak to HSBC staff and get:

  • Information about its products and services;
  • Help with online and mobile banking registrations and resets;
  • Tips and info on digital banking, banking at the Post Office and reducing the risk of fraud.

However, the events don't have cash or counter services, so you won't be able to manage your money there. If you need to access to these services you can use a Post Office branch.

If you need branch access and don't have alternative services nearby, consider switching

If you no longer want to stay with HSBC, you might want to consider switching to a bank that does have a local branch nearby – although bear in mind there's no guarantee that too won't close.

Banks with branches that currently have switching incentives include:

  • Halifax - get £175 for switching. Halifax pays switchers to its Reward account £175 and offers ongoing monthly rewards if you jump through a few hoops. You can't have had a switch bonus from Halifax since April 2020 and there's a £1,500 monthly minimum pay-in to avoid the £3 a month fee.

  • TSB - get £50 for switching. Those switching to TSB's Spend & Save account can get a free £50 upfront, plus a further £50 in August 2023 if you actively use the account from February to July 2023.

See our Best bank accounts guide for the full list of banks offering switching incentives.

Some may want to consider setting up phone or online banking

If you want to switch to banking online or via an app, you can find information on how to do this on HSBC's website.

HSBC also offers virtual help sessions aimed at introducing people to banking online. The sessions are 30 minutes long and are run through the online video calling platform Zoom. You can register your interest online and a member of HSBC staff will then contact you to arrange the session – though, as always, be alert for scams and don't give personal information to anyone calling you out of the blue.
