This week we have heard some great examples of how embracing all things MSE can make a life-changing difference, whether it's by reclaiming thousands of pounds cash you've overpaid or by winning a once-in-a-lifetime holiday in a competition you've found via the Forum.

If you're not a member yet, here's how to register for the MSE Forum. It's simple and quick to join.

A few of this week's top threads

These are some of the Forum discussions that caught our eye this week:

Money Moral Dilemma

Every week, the Money Tips email features a real-life Money Moral Dilemma (MMD for short). They're intended to encourage debate and, as such, they're usually among the most discussed threads each week.

Should I claim compensation from the woman whose dog knocked me off my bicycle?

I was in a bike accident where a lady with a dog on an extendable lead didn't have it under control and it ran into the road, hitting my wheel. I went over the handlebars, fracturing a clavicle. I've had an operation to put a plate in and will be off work for six to eight weeks. There was £150 of damage to my bike, my £30 helmet needs replacing and my clothes were cut off by the paramedics. I've endured a lot of pain and suffered post-surgical depression, but I'm unsure whether to make a claim against the lady for compensation as it was an accident and her dog was also injured. Is it right to ask for something after what I've gone through?

See what our MSE Forumites had to say and add your own thoughts on the Money Moral Dilemma discussion thread. Do please stick to the MSE Forum rules: keep it kind and keep it clean. Remember, there's a real person behind every dilemma.

Pink_poppy wanted to identify the bird that was eating their holly berries in this Christmas card-worthy snap and the consensus was that it is a mistle thrush.

Latest comping wins

This week's best comping news has to be LeeRit's report of their Swiss holiday:

I was picked earlier this year as the winner and took the holiday in August with my daughter. We flew out Monday morning and fly back Friday evening. I'm a bit late posting as it slipped my mind but just wanted to say a huge thanks. I'd been on a dry spell for over a year on the forum and this was a fantastic prize to win. It really was luxurious and far beyond anything I can normally afford! My daughter had never been abroad so it was amazing to be able to take her somewhere so wonderful for a first holiday.

There are some great photos on this thread too. If you're new to the hobby of systematically trying to win prizes, then our Competitions time board is the place to start.

Success of the week

Council tax rebanding was the topic of this week's MSE Money Tips email, and it featured a great case study from Fritzyboy who joined the Forum to tell us about how – on the strength of what they'd learned from Martin and MSE – they'd managed to reclaim more than £10,000.

Your two cents

This Sunday is National Homemade Bread Day and our Old style MoneySaving board has lots of wisdom about making your own loaves – either by hand or with a machine. We'd love to hear your top tips too!
