Rhiannon Moorhouse

Senior Deals & Features Researcher, Writer and Blogger

Rhiannon's experience

Rhiannon joined MSE in May 2015 as a Deals Researcher. Having been to university to study forensic chemistry, then again to earn an inorganic chemistry research PhD, she has been researching deals, couponing, collecting freebies, product testing and discount shopping for longer than she'd care to admit.

Before MSE, Rhiannon worked for an automotive catalytic company, but decided a change was in order after coming home covered in chemicals one time too many.

A little more about Rhiannon

Rhiannon enjoys travel, speaks Japanese and has expertise in MoneySaving in Japan, as well as being an award-winning vegan baker, often putting her baking skills towards cake sales for charity. Lately she's set her sights on learning French and Italian, for the food and culture (mainly the food).

Rhiannon says...

"From slapping coupons on the desk in my interview in 2015, to trying to get everyone in the office to sign up to cashback apps in 2023, living and breathing MoneySaving (and winning awards for it!) plus the mission of helping people manage their money has kept me at MSE all these years."

Many of us haven't been travelling internationally as much in the past two years due to the pandemic, and instead we've been clearing out our houses. If, like me, you've found a veritable treasure trove full of random coins and notes from countries you're not sure you ever visited, or even still exist, this is the blog for you. I'll show you how I easily turned mine into spendable cash and how you can too.

Hero-blog-Boots-advantage-card
In January, Boots introduced a discount scheme for customers with its Advantage loyalty card, giving exclusive deals when shopping in store (similar to Tesco's 'Clubcard Prices'). It's now extended this 'Price Advantage' offer to online shoppers and says it's added 100+ more products to the promo – so I've crunched the numbers to see if the deals are actually any good.

With the cost of living crisis eating into household budgets, and the latest figures show inflation's at its highest rate for 30 years, driven in part by the cost of furniture. With the price of raw materials such as wood rising, there's never been a better time to get thrifty, so I'll teach you how to find free and cheap furniture, plus show how I saved £x revamping my hallway as an example.

Halloween-half-term-blog-main-image
Many schools are off from the end of this week for half-term, and if things seem a little strange, it's not just because Halloween falls next week too. Even if you're not comfortable going out and about during half-term, there's still plenty of fun to be had at home for Halloween.

Salons and barbers are once again temporarily closed across the UK due to lockdown restrictions. If you're in need of a haircut you might be tempted to take matters, and the scissors or clippers, into your own less-than-qualified hands – so this blog is here to offer some dos and don'ts from the MSE team and fellow MoneySavers who've tried it, plus a few video tutorials from the pros.

The Government is providing parents of some children in England who qualify for free school meals with £15 food vouchers, as it did earlier in the pandemic. The vouchers can be used at multiple supermarkets including Aldi, Asda and Tesco, however M&S is topping up the vouchers for its stores to £20, covering the cost of the extra £5 itself. Here, we crunch the numbers and Martin Lewis gives his views on whether the higher value M&S voucher is worth it given it's often a pricier store.

If you're not lucky enough to live near a council-funded library, locally-organised book swapping stations known as a 'Little Free Library' have started popping up all over the country. With Valentine's Day on the way, love is in the air, and so is the pressure to overspend on flowers and chocolate. So when I spotted ultra-posh department store Fortnum & Mason selling boxes of nine chocolate truffles for £20, I set about trying to make my own. Oh, and did I mention they have KETCHUP in them...

It's my Mum's 69th birthday on Wednesday 5th February. Well, it would've been had we not lost her at 55 to cancer. We've been forced to celebrate many occasions without her for over a decade, but this year I've decided it's time for me to celebrate my MoneySaving Mum and how she taught me all I know.
