Rhiannon's experience

Rhiannon joined MSE in May 2015 as a Deals Researcher. Having been to university to study forensic chemistry, then again to earn an inorganic chemistry research PhD, she has been researching deals, couponing, collecting freebies, product testing and discount shopping for longer than she'd care to admit.

Before MSE, Rhiannon worked for an automotive catalytic company, but decided a change was in order after coming home covered in chemicals one time too many.

A little more about Rhiannon

Rhiannon enjoys travel, speaks Japanese and has expertise in MoneySaving in Japan, as well as being an award-winning vegan baker, often putting her baking skills towards cake sales for charity. Lately she's set her sights on learning French and Italian, for the food and culture (mainly the food).

Rhiannon says...

"From slapping coupons on the desk in my interview in 2015, to trying to get everyone in the office to sign up to cashback apps in 2023, living and breathing MoneySaving (and winning awards for it!) plus the mission of helping people manage their money has kept me at MSE all these years."

In my 13+ years of veganism, I've often heard the myth that cooking vegan costs more – but in fact, meat-free meals can be much cheaper to make. I'm no professional chef, but I am a professional MoneySaver and cooking is a big passion of mine, so I'm going to show you some easy family dinner recipes including curry, burgers, and spag bol – with a tasty saving of up to 60% compared to the meat equivalent.

Jumpers are for life, not just for Christmas, but most of us only wear our most garish festive get-up for one or two days a year, then feel pressure to buy a new one the following year. That's neither MoneySaving nor good for the planet, so what can we do about it? I have a few ideas...

Pets aren't free, and usually react even worse than children when you try to downshift their dinner, so with the cost of living crisis showing no signs of letting up, is there any way to save money on your pets quickly and easily? I've found a few apps that could help, but it's worth noting most (not all) discounts are mainly for cats or dogs.

DH-blog-main-sun-cream-downshifting
As the sun starts to show up in earnest (we hope) in the UK, it's the time of year when you might start thinking about sunscreen, unless you wear it daily as recommended by foundations such as The British Skincare Foundation. Sunscreen can be expensive, which worryingly can put people off using the recommended amount, but I've found a fab freebie for you, plus tips on where to get cheap sunscreen with five-star UVA protection.

We've always been a fan of downshifting at MSE, where you switch from brands to much cheaper ‘dupes’ – lookalike products, where often even the packaging is similar to the expensive brand. Now I'm challenging you to 'downshift the downshifters' and swap your favourite £4 Lidl or £6 Aldi perfume dupe for a £1.25 or £2 version at Home Bargains. Will you take the double downshift challenge?

With the price of, well, everything rising it can be worth it to save money where you can. Recently, I've started to wonder about the cost of a breakfast staple, yogurt, and how much money I could potentially save making it myself. Will it work? Will I get food poisoning? Will it cost more than I could buy it for?

Many of us regularly reach for a cup of coffee or tea to give us a caffeine boost, but if you’re out and about and can't bring a thermos from home, the cost of this can quickly mount up.

It might be the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also end up being the most wasteful, too. Wrapping paper is one of the most expensive single-use Christmas products, but there are ways you can forego this expense, saving you money and helping the planet, too. But it's not just about reusing wrapping paper, I've other tips to help you keep wrapping sustainable...

At MSE, we’ve challenged you to ‘downshift’ your grocery shop for years (check our Downshifting Guide), but you can also save on make-up and beauty products by downshifting from brands to much cheaper ‘dupes’ – lookalike products, where often even the packaging is similar to the expensive brand.

Beauty advent calendars
Beauty Advent calendars are significantly pricier than chocolate ones, but they've become increasingly popular in the last few years as a way of bagging beauty products at a fraction of the normal cost. They often sell out early, but can also be heavily discounted later if they don't, so here's a round-up of some of the best I’ve seen.
