Rhiannon's experience

Rhiannon joined MSE in May 2015 as a Deals Researcher. Having been to university to study forensic chemistry, then again to earn an inorganic chemistry research PhD, she has been researching deals, couponing, collecting freebies, product testing and discount shopping for longer than she'd care to admit.

Before MSE, Rhiannon worked for an automotive catalytic company, but decided a change was in order after coming home covered in chemicals one time too many.

A little more about Rhiannon

Rhiannon enjoys travel, speaks Japanese and has expertise in MoneySaving in Japan, as well as being an award-winning vegan baker, often putting her baking skills towards cake sales for charity. Lately she's set her sights on learning French and Italian, for the food and culture (mainly the food).

Rhiannon says...

"From slapping coupons on the desk in my interview in 2015, to trying to get everyone in the office to sign up to cashback apps in 2023, living and breathing MoneySaving (and winning awards for it!) plus the mission of helping people manage their money has kept me at MSE all these years."

Shampoo is an essential purchase for many, but between price rises and shrink-flation, is it still possible to save money? Of course, you can look for deals – but often you can save a lot more by switching to 'dupes', which are cheap products deliberately designed to look the same, smell the same and work as well as a more expensive brand. Only if you're willing to try them...

Spotify subscribers who use its Premium subscription will see prices rise by £1 a month (or £12 a year) in a month's time, the music streaming service has announced. The cost of its Duo and Family subscriptions will also increase by the same amount. But if you're unhappy about the shake-up, you can cancel penalty-free.

DH-blog-main-sun-cream-downshifting
Downshifting is practically in our DNA at MSE, so naturally we want to avoid damaging said DNA by blocking harmful UV rays with sun cream... but it can be expensive. So I set out to find whether downshifting sun cream is possible, and asked skin experts about safety.

Most of us want to do our bit to help the planet, yet beauty products often come in packaging that isn't easily recycled. You might not know, however, that a few big brands will reward you with freebies or discounts for returning your empty containers.

Boots is to cut the number of loyalty points shoppers using its Advantage Card scheme can earn from May. But at the same time the retailer is increasing the number of items Advantage Card-holders can earn discounts on, as well as introducing a new scheme giving users 10% off own-brand items.

If you're a runner, you probably fall into one of two camps – the 'shoes stack' camp, where you rack up multiple pairs, or the 'run in the same shoes until they disintegrate' camp. Either way, you'll be pleased to know you can trade in your stinky sneakers for £20 off a brand new pair. Not only will you save money, but your old shoes won't end up in landfill.

Beauty – is it in the eye of the beholder, or hand of the cardholder? As the cost of lotions and potions adds up, along with their environmental impact, I've put together 11 cheap and easy beauty tips and tricks so you can avoid spending more than you need. Some of these tips are a bit extreme so I know they might not be up everyone's street, but let's see how many of them you'll give a go...

Until Friday, Topcashback is offering up to £35 cashback on a £50 Asda online spend. That's a big saving, but I wondered... is there a way to get the last £15 'free' as well, to give a totally free shop... or even get paid to shop?

cheap perfume
Whether for Christmas, birthdays, Valentine's or anniversaries, fragrances can be an easy gift if you know what they like. For a lot of people, having a signature scent is important, and as long as it's legit – whether bought in Harrods or Asda – it's only the price that changes.

couponforblog
There's no sugar-coating it, times are tough and the latest financial crisis (yes, I remember 2008) is still hitting pockets hard. While the heyday of extreme couponing might be over (see my blog Is couponing kaput? for more on this) occasionally the planets align and I get in a good week of couponing, and you can, too!

If the past couple of years involved less international travel and more home decluttering, then like me, you may have found a veritable treasure trove of random coins and notes from countries you're not sure you ever visited, or even still exist (and even if the country still does, the currency may not!). In this blog, I'll show you how I easily turned mine into spendable cash and how you can too.
