MARTIN'S QUICK BRIEFING
Finally - credit reports online for £2
EVERYONE check your credit files now for self-protection

This week, for the first time, statutory credit reports are available online from all three credit reference agencies. With the credit crunch still biting everyone should check...

  • Why's it important? One small error can kibosh applications for mortgages, cards, loans, mobiles or even paid-monthly home insurance.

  • What's changed? You have a statutory right to check your file for £2, but in the past it was only by post; now after a push from the last govt all agencies offer it online too (free if you're in financial hardship). Both Equifax & CallCredit give instant reports, while Experian send it after a few days.

  • What to check? EVERYTHING. Problems big and small can hurt, I've seen people rejected because unused (but not cancelled) mobile contract addresses hadn't been updated after a house move. Plus check for products that aren't yours in case of ID fraud.

  • How often to check? Always before big applications (e.g. mortgage,) otherwise once a year for prevention - check all three agencies if poss as they cover different companies (though if you only do one, pick the easiest, Equifax).

  • What if there are errors? Contact the relevant lender and ask them to change it, if it disagrees e.g. they incorrectly say you defaulted, write to the agency to add a "notice of correction" to your file to explain (briefly) your side. This slows applications, but for big issues can help - plus complain to the financial ombudsman who can order it to be changed (see the credit rating guide for more).

  • Isn't there a loophole to get 'em free? Yes. Two agencies tout 'free trials' for their c. £80 a year 'credit watch' services. These are unnecessary but include free credit reports, so sign up for Equifax* & Experian* trials, download the report then immediately cancel (Find out how). Plus members of cashback websites can get PAID £7 for doing the trial.

  • How do I boost my credit score? Ensure you're on the electoral roll (check here), plus if you've never had credit or have a poor history get a credit rebuilding credit card. It'll have a hideous interest rate but that's no problem if you use a direct debit to repay in FULL every month. These are the tip of the iceberg, for all tips see the Boost Your Credit Rating guide.

Get £1,000s towards your childcare - perfect for summer
Summer can mean a massive boost in costs. Check now what help you can get
Don't just think of babies in swaddling cloth; after-school or summer clubs for 6-foot, hairy 15-year-olds count too (and that's just the girls!). We've updated our detailed guide - here's a summary... Childcare tax credits (avg. £3,500/year): If you're a single parent who works 16+ hours or a couple who both work 16+ hours and have family income under £40,000 check if you're eligible - even if you only pay for childcare during summer. Childcare vouchers: These let you pay for childcare from pre-tax earnings (ie £1,000 childcare costs you £700), though beware it can lower tax credits eligibility (full info in guide). Book Holiday Car Hire NOW - save £100s. New Guide
Halve costs - dodge the big boys, speedily compare & use specialist insurers
Car hire costs have rocketed this year, yet book now and bargains are still possible e.g. Malaga as low as £10/day (many big boys charge up to £40 for the same). To rocket propel the savings, we've fully rewritten and re-researched the guide, here's a summary. Step 1. Speedily Compare: Use top pick comparison sites Kayak*, Travelsupermarket* & Car Rentals* to quickly scour providers for cheapest prices. Step 2: Bid for 20% less (US only). Take the comparisons' cheapest, reduce it by 10%-50% and use Priceline's* 'name your own price' function to bid and see if any companies will agree to it. Step 3: Beat 'excess' insurance traps. Most included insurance makes you pay a HUGE amount, often £500, if there's an issue - so they hire companies and flog further insurance to cover this excess at extortionate rates. Instead compare separate 'excess' insurance policies via MoneyMaxim*. There are many other ways to save too, for FULL best buys, tricks and cashback info see the New Guide: Cheap Car Hire Related Guides: Cheap Flights, Cheap Hotels, Package Holiday

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q. Natwest's stopping paying in-credit interest on current accounts. I'm unable to find other banks offering credit interest unless you pay a minimum amount in each month. Is this the beginning of the end for interest on current accounts? From Steve O by email

Martin's A: Only for some. There are many decent current account interest offers at the moment, Santander* offers £100 sign up bonus and 5% interest, Halifax Rewards* via moneysupermarket gives £50 bonus and £5 a month.

Yet as you say you need to pay money in, each month to qualify. So actually this is a tightening of conditions, with the 'pay money in' rule you needn't be in-credit and you can withdraw the cash whenever. It's effectively a way of ensuring it's your main account as you pay your salary into it - penalising those on lower salaries or who don't have regular incomes.

With the two accounts I mentioned both require you to pay in £1,000 a month (equiv to £15,000 salary), but there is a trick for the organised. If you're keeping over a £1,000 in the account, once a month withdraw it elsewhere then pay it back in and you'll fulfill the criteria (or do it in smaller tranches if you've less)

Discuss: Int on current accounts?
