Martin's Quick Briefing

Make a change in just 50 words
Suggest YOUR improvements for PM, Dep PM & Ed Miliband

Politicians like big 'legacy' issues, but miss those little easily implemented changes that help us all. We want yours.

"If something bugs you - this is your chance."

The best go into our MSE 50 word Moneyfesto 2011 that the 3 big party leaders have agreed to look at, plus regulators too. Many of last year's caused change, either directly or as added pressure.

Successes! Little things with a big impact...

  • Cash ISA transfers now faster. On the back of a 50 word suggestion, Consumer Focus launched its first 'super-complaint'. As a result the industry stepped up and rules will change on 31 Dec to slash the permitted times. Related: Top cash ISA transfers.

  • Energy companies must give tariff details on statements. The suggester said: "You often have little idea of when you can switch or the changes..." We showed Ofgem and it's changed rules to introduce more detail on statements. Related: Cheap Gas & Elec.

  • Now opt-out of energy door-to-door sales. The suggestion said it all: "Countless people are switched to utility companies, without their permission, by cold calls. More needs doing to protect us from this form of fraud." Since, new rules say 'put a sign on your door and energy salespeople can't knock' (get a free no-cold caller sign).

See all the successes and...

Suggest your 50 word ideas for change

What the politicians say about 50 words...
(edited for space, see full comments in the guide)

David Cameron: "We want consumers to get a fair deal, charges made more transparent, fairer credit for the less well off, and better financial education for all. But we know that the best ideas come from you, the consumer, so we look forward to seeing your proposals."

Nick Clegg: "We want to empower every consumer to get a fair deal. We're committed to giving households more control over their energy costs and helping people manage their finances. Small changes can make a real difference, so we await with interest your suggestions for making Britain fairer for consumers."

Ed Miliband: "Labour's on the side of people dealing with tough economic times. We've launched a policy review and need to hear from you, to ensure we're drawing on the best ideas from people such as MoneySavingExpert users who have real insights to offer."

THE ONES NOT TO MISS

FREE and cheap warranties. New Guide!
Don't buy expensive shop cover - know your rights and slash the costs

Many shops try to scare us into buying costly warranties for electrical and white goods - most are a complete waste of money. Our new guide shows how to get peace of mind for less. Here's a summary. FREE warranties: Three main credit cards give a year's additional protection after the manufacturers' 1 year guarantee ends; provided you buy the goods on the card. REPAY IN FULL every month so there's no interest and it's free. Top pick: Nationwide's card* (16.9% APR) wins due to its other perks - cheap spending overseas and lets you shift debts to it at 0% for 15mths (3% fee). Alternatively there's Ulster Gold (16.9% APR) & Egg Money (18.6% APR). Cheap multi-appliance warranties: Warranty Direct* & Warranty Care offer policies covering a wide range of appliances for around £10/month. Do you need a warranty? By law, goods must last a 'reasonable time' anyway. So if a £1,000 plasma breaks down after 13 mths, while it'll be a fight, you've still a case even if it's out of warranty. Plus, theft and damage (not breakdown) may be covered by home insurance. For FULL info, safety details, how to complain, and more options, please read the New Guide: Free & Cheap Warranties Related: Consumer Rights, Cheap Home Insurance, Credit Card Perks

Question Of The Week

MoneySaving Polls

Q. I took out a £10,000 bond I took out with the Post Office in March. I notice from the paperwork it's backed by the Bank Of Ireland. With all the troubles in Ireland with the banks, am I covered by the UK's £50,000 guarantee scheme? Pat, by email

MSE Sunny's A: Yep, your £10,000 is fully protected by the UK government guarantee. From 1st November 2010 both new and old Post Office deposits were moved into the UK's protection scheme. It was crazy that until so recently a big name like this was protected abroad, but after lots of lobbying the change sensibly got made.

This means that the first £50,000 will be fully protected if Bank of Ireland were to go bust. And not to forget that this increases to £85,000 from 31st December 2010.

For more information see our Post Office news story and Safe Savings guide.

This week's poll:

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?

Last week's poll result:

Would you re-nationalise the energy companies?

Over half of you (56%) thought it time energy companies should be taken back into public ownership, with only 5% thinking they should stay privatised with no regulation.
