FREE glovebox info-pack for parking emergencies
Urgent action plan at the scene if unfairly ticketed/clamped. EVERY driver should print out
We've a new guide to combat the helplessness many feel when a ticket's unfairly slapped on your windscreen, or your car's clamped. Our two-page parking-emergency print-out is designed to sit in your car, ready for action. Here's a flavour:
Always ask for a licence if clamped. By law, clampers must have a 16-digit Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence number. Check (on your phone if necessary) whether its number's legit on the SIA website. If not, call the police.
- Check if it's a public or private ticket. If it's a Penalty Charge Notice or an Excess Charge Notice from a council/Transport for London, or a police Fixed Penalty Notice it's official, don't ignore. On private land (eg, supermarket car parks) tickets may look official and use similar initials, but they are NOT fines, just invoices and not always enforceable.
- What evidence to gather. If you've a phone-cam, take photos of unclear signs/road markings (or their absence), photo where your car is and, if there are witnesses, politely ask for a statement or their details to back you up.
- Tips to prevent tickets... The mini-guide also has tips on when you can park on yellows and reds, plus:
-Know your blips: One yellow blip on the kerb indicates no loading sometimes.
-Getting change is no excuse. Ensure you've money in advance, or you can legitimately be ticketed.
-Only display one ticket. If the active ticket is among 20 old ones, it could be deemed not clearly displayed.

The PPI reclaiming hold's a thing of the past. Lenders are re-opening complaints and have put aside £6bn+ to pay claims. We're getting reports of big-money pay-outs. If you've got or had a loan or credit card, check now if you were mis-sold insurance with it via the PPI Reclaiming and Credit Card PPI Reclaiming guides. Some successes just in ...
£13,480 credit card reclaim! We often think of credit card reclaims as smaller, but with £5,000 debt on a card the PPI's £500ish/yr. So over the years, it can add up. Here's an email we received:
"I've had an MBNA credit card for years and wrote to it about mis-sold PPI. Eight months later, today, I received notification it will repay me £13,480. The patience and time to fill in various questionnaires has paid off."
- Just two weeks to get £840. Many have previously complained of huge delays, though things seem to be changing, according to this forum post: "I have recently joined the PPI reclaiming club and just been offered my first refund for the full premium plus interest from Santander, totalling £843. One down, 13 claims to go.
Got a response and offer within two weeks of sending the original complaint letter!"
- Just one letter gets £3,400. Don't pay claims handlers to reclaim, the new regime means DIY is easier, as this forum post shows: "I received notification I'm entitled to £3,398 from HSBC for mis-sold PPI and just had to tell you.
One letter was all it took and a little wait. To anyone thinking of claiming, just do it, it will only cost you a stamp. Remember, it's your money."

New top LOW-FEE 0% balance transfer card
Shift debt to 16 months 0% with 1.5% fee - half the typical charge
While only 16mths 0% compared to the longest's 20mths, the low fee means it often wins. Always try to clear the card (or if much debt's left, balance transfer again) before the 0% ends. All cards below require you pass a credit check.
New! 16 month 0% with 1.5% fee. New cardholders shifting debt to Virgin* get 16mths 0% for a 1.5% fee (Moneysup exclusive, the link takes you via it). Once the 0% period ends, it jumps to 18.9% representative APR. Existing MBNA cardholders (same provider) can still get it, but can't shift debts from other MBNA cards to it.
- 0% for 20 months with 3.2% fee. New Barclaycard Platinum* cardholders can shift debt for 20 mths 0% with a 3.2% fee (then 17.5% representative APR). If you already have one, Natwest*/RBS* are 18mths 0% with 2.8% fee (16.6% rep APR).
- Which card's best? Virgin can undercut Barclaycard for up to 25 months, provided you make consistent repayments to clear the debt (if not, longer 0%s are safer). This is because the amount saved due to the lower fee more than offsets the higher interest after the 0%, as by then, you should have little debt. If the concept's confusing, our easy-to-use Which Card is Cheapest? calculator does it for you.
