There's a whiff of summer in the air. We're not there yet, but peak holiday season is approaching. And if you've booked to go abroad, the most important thing to do first is to sort out travel insurance. So we're focusing on that this week and other summer travel prep tips next. And when it comes to travel cover, Martin's rule is simple: get it...

If you've booked & not done it yet, DO IT NOW. Half of what you pay for is protection in case illness or other issues before you travel mean you can't go - though insurance must already be in place for that (see what counts as having insurance in place). However, around one in five of those who have booked DON'T have insurance yet (from 42,000 votes in Martin's social media polls on Monday) - a dangerous risk. As Bev posted on X in reply to the poll...

"My parents made the mistake of waiting until closer to the date and mum got diagnosed with cancer and had no choice but to cancel as she needed life-saving surgery. They only got 10% back. An expensive mistake."

Cheapest travel insurance policies (for all ages)
Here are the cheapest bog-standard, no-frills, Financial Conduct Authority-regulated options that we can find meeting our minimum cover levels, judged purely on price, NOT feedback - for those not too fussed about extras or add-ons, and who just see it as a backstop. Want a higher-end policy? If you want stronger cover and feedback, to cover airline failure, natural disasters etc, go straight to our Travel Insurance Finder tool, which includes these costlier options.
Cheapest annual policies
If you'll go abroad at least twice a year, even just for weekends, annual cover usually works out cheapest. It covers virtually all trips away, though often has a duration limit of a max 30 days per trip (many let you pay more to extend this). The exact price depends on age & circumstances, so we give the four cheapest options - check at least a couple. For those under age 66 From £9 for individuals in Europe and starting at £93 for a family worldwide (where all of the party are aged under 66). For over-65s Costs rocket with age, so we've put a lot of work into our Over-65s' travel insurance guide. Yet briefly, annual prices are from £35 if you're aged 66, and £113 if you're aged 76. Check Admiral (use discount code MSE15), Urban Jungle (Basic), Saga (Standard) and Leisure Guard Flexi (Bronze). Couples' policies are available too; family policies are trickier, unless you've a child at home under 18 (or in full-time education).
Cheapest single-trip policies
For those who just want to cover one trip (or may need specialist cover for it), enter the dates you're travelling even if months ahead and you'll be covered for cancellation from the moment you pay. For those under age 66 For a week, from £7 for individuals in Europe, or from £63 for a family worldwide. Check *Coverwise (Bronze), Leisure Guard Flexi (Bronze), CoverForYou (Silver)* and** Urban Jungle (Basic). For over-65s* Again, it's best to go to our Over-65s' travel insurance guide, as it's age dependent, but it can be from £26/wk for an individual in Europe (£66 worldwide). Pre-existing medical conditions
If you currently have or have had a physical or mental health condition, you will usually need to declare it to the travel insurer. In some cases it changes nothing, in others it may hugely increase costs, or the provider may simply refuse to cover you (either entirely or for the specific condition). As there are many variables, we can't summarise easily, so jump straight to our Top pre-existing medical conditions travel insurance guide for step-by-step help. It can take a little elbow grease, but hopefully it'll help, as it did for Donald, who emailed us earlier this year: "Thank you Martin. Just saved £258 on travel insurance for a pre-existing medical issue. Went from £595 to £337. Keep up the great advice." PS: Martin's Money & Mental Health Policy Institute charity is campaigning for fair travel insurance prices for those with mental health issues and has the bit between its teeth on it.

What counts as having travel insurance in place? On the back of our ASAB tip, many people ask about what counts as having insurance in place. So put simply...

- Single-trip policies: You pay for insurance to cover a specific trip away (eg, 10 to 17 August), and once you've paid for that insurance, the cover is in place, so if something happens before then to stop you going away, you should be covered.

- Annual policies: If you don't have any other cover, you need the start date to be the time you book the holiday (or as soon after as possible) - NOT the date you're going on holiday. Otherwise, if something happens before the holiday start date, you won't be covered.

If you've already got annual cover but your holiday is after the cover ends, get another policy to start as soon as it finishes. (Most policies, including all the ones we list, will cover you if something happens to a booked holiday which is after your renewal date, as long as you renew or take out a new policy so, crucially, there's no break in cover. But a few insurers don't, so check.)
Holidaying in Europe? Ensure you've an in-date Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or its EHIC predecessor - if not, apply for a free GHIC. This entitles you to treatment at state-run hospitals or GPs at the same cost as a local (so if it's free for them, it's free for you). See it as an addition to, not a substitute for, travel insurance.
Can you save large with a packaged bank account? You pay a monthly fee to these bank accounts in return for a host of included insurance extras. Good quality travel insurance is a key offering, as are mobile phone and breakdown cover. If you're paying for all of these anyway, this can save you £100s.

- Co-op Bank: £15/mth (£18/mth from July), though currently it pays switchers a FREE £175. Max travel insurance age: 79. Other insurance: Mobile phone cover and UK & European breakdown cover for account-holders.
- Virgin Money: £12.50/mth. Max travel insurance age: 74. Other insurance: Family mobile phone cover and UK & European breakdown cover for account-holders.
- Nationwide: £18/mth. Max travel insurance age: No limit. Other insurance: Family mobile phone cover and UK & European breakdown cover for account-holders.
- Halifax: £19/mth. Max travel insurance age: 70. Other insurance: Mobile phone cover for account-holders, plus family UK roadside breakdown cover.

Jackie, whose dad is 90, emailed us in March: "My dad was quoted around £600 for European single-trip cover and almost £1,000 for annual multi-trip. After contacting loads of companies, he phoned his bank, Nationwide, who said if he upgraded his account to the packaged account (£216 a year), they would cover him on an annual multi-trip basis for £100 extra."
What if my travel insurer unfairly turns my claim down? Knowing how firms will respond to claims is tough. You can always formally complain to the insurer and, if rejected, go to the free Financial Ombudsman, which can adjudicate.

It worked for Susan, who emailed to tell us: "I took Martin's advice about pursuing a travel insurance claim when the insurance company refused it. The ombudsman found my claim was treated unfairly (cancellation of holiday due to cancer diagnosis) and they have been instructed to pay in full, plus £100 compensation."

Martin: 'SAVERS... the Bank of England has cut UK base rates yet again, with further cuts predicted, so it may be time to fix your savings to lock in today's 4.5% rates!'

Last week, the Bank of England cut the UK base rate from 4.5% to 4.25%, and this could be a tipping point for savers. Over the last year the top easy-access (variable) savings rates... where you can put money in and take it out when you like... have whooped the pants off the top fixed savings... where you lock your money away in return for a set interest rate. While it's partially been caused by a price-war among challenger banks (likely to soften now as ISA season ends), much is due to differences in how rates are set.

Both fixes and easy-access rates have largely decreased in line with the base rate during this time. While fixes have more closely tracked the base rate, top easy-access rates have often remained slightly above, with sharp drops in late 2024 followed by more gradual declines in the first half of 2025. Fixed rates are set based on long-term views of interest rates. The rate new fixes are offered at tends to move, in simple terms, with the market's long-term view of interest rates, not current UK base rates (as variable savings do). So, fixes are currently lower partly as UK rates are predicted to drop further - we spoke to four City analysts, who all expect rates to be 3.25% or 3.5% at the end of 2025, and one even says they'll go as low as 2.75% in the first half of 2026.

That means the current top fixed rates are higher than where the UK base rate is predicted to go. If those predictions do come true, today's 4.5% fixes may rapidly end up paying more than top future easy-access rates (plus they give the boon of certainty). So if you're concerned, the safest option, based on the mood music, is to lock in a rate by putting some savings in fixes... that's not me saying it'll definitely be a win, just that it's a strong risk-averse option.
The highest rates are easy access (variable) - but these are likely to drop. Before we get on to fixes, for benchmarking let's speedily do top easy-access rates. There have been no announcements yet as to whether they'll be cut on the back of the UK rate cut, but if they follow past trends many will likely drop c. 0.25% points. All %s are AERs.

- Normal Savings: App-only Sidekick* is 4.76% (min £5k), but has a slightly complex structure. Top online account is Chetwood 4.52%. Of bigger names, Marcus (owned by Goldman Sachs)* is 4.3% and Yorkshire BS* is 4.1% (min £1). Cahoot (owned by Santander) at 4.41% (min £1) pays more, though it only lasts a year, then matures and is moved to a likely low interest rate account. Rates do change so check our full, updated top savings rundown.

- Tax-Free Cash ISAs: Cash ISAs are just savings accounts you can put up to £20,000 per tax year in and the interest is never taxed. If it's likely you'll pay tax on some savings interest now or in future (see how savings are taxed), they're well worth using. As Trading 212* at 4.83% beats top normal savings, it's worth considering even if tax isn't an issue. Of bigger names, there's Marcus (owned by Goldman Sachs)* at 4.3%. A fix lets you lock in a rate to protect from possible future rate cuts. Here you lock your money away, without access (except fixed cash ISAs) in return for a guaranteed rate of interest. Even if you're unsure, you could open one now without funding it (most give you two weeks to put money in) then watch what happens to other rates to see whether it's worth it. If you then decide it isn't right for you, just don't put the money in.

As for how long to fix, well the first consideration is how long you can comfortably lock that money away. After that, it's about how much you value certainty - the more, the longer you should fix. In recent times, we'd seen longer fixes paying far less than shorter - now it's balanced out (likely indicating that the market thinks things will drop, then stabilise), which means fixing longer looks a better deal. But of course, no one knows how it'll look with hindsight.

Is it better to fix in normal savings or a cash ISA? Normal fixed savings pay more, so as long as you don't/won't pay tax on savings interest, they win. Yet if you will or may in future earn over your Personal Savings Allowance of £1,000/yr interest for basic 20% rate taxpayers and £500 for higher 40% rate taxpayers, then fill up your cash ISAs as the interest is tax-free, which means, overall, you'll get more.

Plus while normal fixed savings lock your money away, cash ISAs can't do that. They must allow you to access your cash, but they can charge an interest penalty of 90 to 365 days' worth of interest if you do. So if there is even a small chance you might need to dip in, a fixed cash ISA can be a handy get-out-of-jail-free card.

Got a will? Register it for FREE throughout May. Your will should be stored securely (such as at a solicitors' firm, or safely at home) so it can be tracked down easily. As an extra precaution, commercial firm the National Will Register is used by 10+ million to log details about where wills are kept, to help loved ones find them when needed. Registering normally costs £30, but you can register it for free during May. New longest 0% balance transfer gives all accepted 33mths 0% (3.45% fee). A 0% balance transfer's where you get a new card that pays off old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but interest-free for a set period. And a reminder that last week the new Barclaycard 33mth 0% (3.45% fee) became the longest, meaning debt shifted to it is interest-free until Feb 2028 - and crucially all accepted get the full 0% length. Golden rules: Repay at least the monthly minimum & clear the card before the 0% ends, or it jumps to 24.9% rep APR interest. Full help in top balance transfers.

This is only available for those who haven't had an Amex card within the last two years...

Only do this if you'll always pay the card off IN FULL each month, preferably by Direct Debit (so you don't miss it), so it's interest-free. Otherwise the 87.3% rep APR interest dwarfs the rewards.

When we say pay off IN FULL, we mean IN FULL, not nearly in full. The words IN FULL are Martin's catchphrase for a reason. If you spend £1,000 in a month and clear the card entirely, there's no interest. Spend £1,000 and pay off £999.99, and you usually pay interest on the whole £1,000, not just the 1p left.
