Discounts for teachers

Food, shopping, health & wellbeing and more deals

There are over half a million teachers in the UK playing a vital role in the development of young people, and while seeing pupils or students learning and succeeding must be rewarding, some additional rewards for those hard-working teachers seems more than earned – which is where this guide comes in.

We've rounded up special discounts teachers (and in many cases those working at education establishments in other roles) can get for food and drink, clothing, days out and more.

This is the first iteration of this guide. Over the coming weeks we'll be adding more ways teachers can get discounts. If there are any you use you'd like to tell us about, let us know.

New. £5 Blue Light Card gives access to 1,000s of in-store & online deals

Since 2008, the Blue Light Card scheme has been a way for NHS and emergency services workers to access discounts – and as of August 2024, it's now open to teachers (excludes higher education; see eligibility criteria below).

A Blue Light Card costs £4.99 for two years' access. You'll need your education establishment email address, work ID, or a recent payslip to prove you're eligible for membership.

Which teachers are eligible?

Blue Light Card says teaching and supporting staff working in any of the following can sign up:

  • State early years & primary schools
  • State secondary schools & sixth form colleges
  • Special schools, vocational schools, referral units, and centrally employed

Higher education staff aren't currently included, but can access offers through the free Discounts for Teachers scheme mentioned above.

What deals can I get?

Blue Light Card says it offers 15,000+ high street and online discounts from large retailers and local businesses, covering fashion, days out, restaurants, holidays and more. You aren't able to see specific deals until after signing up, though we've included some in our list of deals below, including 25% off Beefeater and Pizza Hut, 10% off Starbucks, and 5% back at Asda.

If you use Google Chrome as your internet browser you can also add the free Blue Light Card Chrome extension which, when installed, will automatically check if the website you're on has a Blue Light Card discount available.

If you think you'll save more than a fiver in two years then a Blue Light Card can be worth it. See Blue Light Card FAQs for full information.

Up to 12% cashback at 80+ retailers for teachers with the Ode prepaid card

Teachers (plus NHS and care workers, and those working in charity) can apply for the Ode prepaid card, which gets up to 12% cashback at over 80 retailers. When we checked, this included Asda 2.5%, M&S and Waitrose 3%, Ikea 4%, Primark 7%, Boots and John Lewis 5%, and Virgin Experience Days 12% – see more brands and cashback.

You'll get the cashback on top of other offers, so it's good for maxing savings. There's a minimum top up of £5 (with prepaid cards, there's no credit check and you can only spend the amount you add to it). Any earned cashback is automatically added to your balance within seven days in most cases and is available to spend when you next top up.

The card is free for the first year, then a £2.99 annual fee kicks in – so remember to cancel then if you find you're not earning much cashback. It's also important to note that after your card's two years old, if you don't use it for 12 months there's a £5 per month inactivity fee.

  • How your money is protected on prepaid cards

Any money you deposit is ring-fenced in a separate bank account, so if there are problems with Ode, the money's safe as the bank or building society where your money's held will still retain your cash for you to get back.

The slight risk comes if the bank or building society goes bust, because your cash is NOT protected in this case.

It's best to think of your prepaid card as one that you'll keep cash on for immediate or short-term spending requirements, rather than as a place to store a load of cash for long periods of time.

Before applying, see our full Prepaid cards guide for more need-to-knows.

Top freebies & discounts for teachers

This is our list of top deals currently offered to teachers and education staff. We've made it clear whether you can get the deal just by showing work ID, or if you need to be signed up to a discount scheme such as Discounts for Teachers or Blue Light Card.

These discounts tend to beat those offered to all, but sometimes retailers have short-lived promotions available to everyone that will save you more money, so before using a discount for teachers, it's worth comparing other offers to make sure you're getting the best deal.

  • Teachers and school staff can link their Blue Light Card (£4.99 for two years – see full info) to the free Asda Rewards app to get 5% back each time on selected 'fresh' purchases in-store (see 'More info' for exclusions) when scanning the app at the checkout. The amount will go into your Asda Rewards 'cashpot' which you can use to get a discount on a future shop in-store or online, so it's not an on-the-spot discount.

Asda says it considers fresh products (and therefore included in the offer) to be fresh meat, cooked meat, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, fresh fruit juice and smoothies, dairy and bakery. For exclusions see the Asda Blue Light Card T&Cs.

    How it works

    • Download/sign in to the Asda Rewards app, select 'More' then 'Memberships'. You can then link your Blue Light Card – once you've filled in the info, Asda says verification will take seconds.
    • Shop as normal in-store (find your nearest, not valid online) and then scan your Asda Rewards app at the checkout – you'll receive 5% of the amount of your eligible shopping into your cashpot in the app – up to a maximum of £100 a day.
    • To claim money in your cashpot against the cost of a future shop you'll need to exchange it for an in-app voucher within six months (vouchers are then valid for three months).

See full Asda Blue Light Card terms and conditions.

    • You can't use the discount online, on George/George.com, Frozen, Non-Fresh Food items, health and beauty, baby, household including pet and laundry, George Home, Homeware and outdoor, entertainment and toys, Asda Tyres, Fuel, all alcohol, Tobacco, Lottery products, Gift Vouchers & Cards, Infant/Formula Milk, Cash-back, Fireworks, Online Games & Instant Tickets, Photo Printing, Saver Stamps, Postage Stamps, ‘Top-Up’ Mobile Phone Cards, any other online Financial Services and Insurances, Pharmacy, café & separate concessions and all items within the Just Essentials by Asda and Smart Price ranges.

  • If you're a new online customer to Iceland* and a Blue Light Card holder, you can get £6 off a £45 or more spend online only.

You'll need to log in to Blue Light Card online to claim a unique discount code, which you can then use at the checkout. This offer will only work once. A Blue Light Card costs £4.99 for two years, so if you're only using it for this offer you'd still save money.

If you're already an Iceland customer, you can still get a discount via your Blue Light Card, however it will be £4 off a £70 spend, so if you're not planning on taking up any other Blue Light Card offers it might not be worth it for you.

Important: If you amend your order, you will lose the code and pay the full amount, as the codes are single use only, so be sure to add everything you need before checking out.

The cost of carrier bags and adding electronic savings to your Bonus Card won't count towards the £45 or £70 spend, and in Scotland, purchases of alcohol don't count towards the minimum spend either. See Iceland's full terms and conditions*.

  • Up to 10% off a Mac or iPad plus a free Apple gift card up to £120

Up to 10% off a Mac or iPad plus a free Apple gift card up to £120

For university students, teachers and staff

    Expired

Apple doesn’t offer widespread discounts and its products certainly aren't MoneySaving, but if a new Apple device is what you want, there is a way to take a bite out of the cost of Macs and iPads – up to 10% off the normal price via the Apple Education Store* online or at a physical Apple Store. Plus, when you buy selected devices, Apple is offering a gift card of up to £120 until Monday 21 October.

Last year Apple offered a gift card up to £130, so while this is still a good deal if you're in the market for new Apple tech, we're disappointed to see the gift card value decrease by £10.

Officially, this education discount is geared towards university students and teachers, but even if you’re neither, you may still be able to get it if you work in education in any capacity, or you've a child who's at or going to be at university (see who it’s for below).

Who's eligible and how do you get the discount?

    1. Students attending (or who've been accepted into) university  go to the Apple Education Store* website. You’ll be asked to sign up (or log in) to discount scheme Unidays using your uni email address for verification. The education discounts will then be automatically applied.

If you’re unable to sign up to Unidays or you don’t want to give it your data, you can call Apple on 0800 048 0408 and it’ll verify you with your ID or acceptance letter and you can continue your purchase over the phone. Alternatively, take the verification documents to an Apple Store (find your nearest).

    2. Teachers and education workers at all levels in any state or private education institute, for example, schools, colleges and universities (even if you work in the office and not the classroom)  visit an Apple Store and show proof of where you work such as a payslip or call 0800 048 0408.

    3. Parents of current or newly accepted university students  visit an Apple Store and show your child's student ID or acceptance letter.

Free Apple gift card up to £120 when buying a Mac or iPad

If you buy certain products through the Apple Education scheme until Monday 21 October, you can get an Apple gift card of £80 or £120, depending on what product you buy.

Here is the list of eligible products and the value of the voucher you'd get:

Product Education Store cost Gift card amount
    iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch with M2 chip From £549 £80
    iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch with M4 chip From £899 £80
    Mac Mini From £539 £80
    MacBook Air 13-inch and 15-inch From £899 £120
    MacBook Pro 14-inch, 16-inch From £1,589 £120
    iMac 24-inch From £1,349 £120

Once you’ve selected an eligible Apple product, the gift card will be automatically added to your 'bag', and will be sent to your billing email address within 24 hours from the time your new product ships – so you can't use this straight away to get a discount on the product itself.

Apple has confirmed there's no expiry date on the gift card and it can be redeemed in-store or online at Apple, or at the App Store – see Apple's webpage on how to redeem a gift card for more info.

Of course, it's not worth buying a Mac or iPad just for the gift card, but if you're after one of the eligible Apple products anyway, it's a decent deal as Apple rarely does offers.

You can also get 20% off AppleCare+ (Apple's warranty scheme), to protect your purchase, as well as one month of free Apple Music and Apple TV+ – you'll be automatically signed up to the student price for both services after, so remember to cancel if you don't want to keep it.

Which Apple products can you get up to 10% off?

You can get up to 10% off Mac and iPad products via its Education Store (not the regular Apple website) – this is a year-round offer.

We did some number crunching on four student discount examples on Wednesday 24 July:

Product Apple Education price Next cheapest
iPad Air  From £549 (normally from £599) £599 at John Lewis and Currys
iPad Pro From £899 (normally from £999) £999 at Currys
Macbook Air From £899 (normally from £999) £996 at Very
    iMac From £1,349 (normally from £1,399) £1,259 at AO.com

As you can see with the education discount, Apple is currently cheapest for most products, but not all – though we haven't factored in the added value of the 'free' gift card. Prices are constantly changing so do your own checks and look out for discounts at other retailers.

Not a student, teacher or other education worker?

Provided you know someone who’s studying at uni or working at a school, college or uni, you can in theory get the discount if that person’s willing to go and buy the goods for you. As far as we can see, this isn’t a breach of the terms and conditions. Of course, you’ll have to decide whether it’s morally okay – as this is a scheme designed specifically for people in education.

See our Student discounts round-up for other ways to save.

    MSE Georgia-May says:

We've seen Apple do this 'free' gift with purchase deal for several years now, but this year isn't as strong as some past offerings. Previously, it was 'free' Beats headphones (normally £116-£224), and then more recently Apple AirPods (normally £150). Last year, the gift card was up to £130 but it's decreased by £10 for 2024.

If you're a fan of Apple products and you were planning to buy anyway, and will buy again, this could still be a decent offer. The only other time we see a similar deal is over Black Friday weekend, where Apple typically offers a gift card up to £160 with selected purchases.
