  • Amex 'Shop Small' free £5 on £15+ spend

Amex 'Shop Small' free £5 on £15+ spend

    At local stores, restaurants etc

    Expired

It's been a tough time for independent shops so here's a great incentive to support local businesses. If you're a personal American Express credit or charge cardholder, or a small business cardholder, you can get £5 cashback when you spend £15 or more at participating local businesses from Sat 5 Jun until 11.59pm on Fri 25 Jun – but you're restricted to five uses (once per location), so max £25 back. Amex has told us corporate and business travel cardholders aren't eligible – see full exclusions below.

It's valid at thousands of independent small shops, restaurants, cafes, hairdressers etc – but not the big chains. What's more, you'll be able to get the cashback on top of existing offers. It's in-store only, so purchases made online – even at a participating retailer – won't work.

However, it’s not an excuse to overspend, and as it’s a credit card, make sure you pay it off IN FULL each month to avoid interest.

    Which American Express cards qualify?

Amex has said the £5 cashback is available to all personal and small business Amex credit and charge cardholders registered in the UK, with a few exceptions – below is a list of cards which Amex says are definitely not eligible for the Shop Small offer:

    • Corporate cards
    • Business travel cards
    • Store cards
    • Prepaid cards

    How to get it

    1. Either go to American Express Shop Small, log in, see if the offer's available and save it to your card; or do it via the 'Offers' section of the Amex app (IOS/Android).

    2. If you're eligible, look for participating retailers near you and from Sat 5 Jun use your Amex to spend £15+ in a single transaction in store until 11.59pm on Fri 25 Jun.

    Other key info

    • Your £5 cashback should appear as a credit to your card within five working days, but could take as long as 90 days from the offer end date. If you've an Amex cashback card, you get your normal level of cashback as well.
    • You can only get the £5 cashback once in each store, but you can use this offer up to five times.
    • Additional cardholders must save this offer to their own card via the Amex website or app.

  • Amex 'Shop Small' free £5 on £10+ spend

Amex 'Shop Small' free £5 on £10+ spend

    At local stores, restaurants etc

    Expired

It's been a tough year for independent shops so here's a great incentive to support local businesses. If you're a personal American Express credit or charge cardholder, you can get £5 cashback when you spend £10 or more at participating local businesses until Sun 20 Dec – but you're restricted to 10 uses, so max £50 back. Corporate and business cardholders aren't eligible – see full exclusions below.

The £5 cashback is available to all personal Amex credit and charge cardholders with a few exceptions (see bullet points below). Last week we saw some examples on social media of the offer not appearing for some, but Amex has assured us that the offer is available to all personal cardholders (besides the exemptions) and that anyone not seeing it in their app or online account should contact Amex to have the issue fixed. We've since heard from people who had issues with the offer last week that it's now been added onto their accounts.

These Amex cards are definitely not eligible for the Shop Small offer:

    • Corporate cards
    • Business travel cards
    • Store cards
    • Prepaid cards

How to check and then get it

    1. Either go to American Express Shop Small, log in, see if the offer's available and save it to your card; or do it via the 'Offers' section of the Amex app.

    2. If you're eligible, look for participating retailers near you and use your Amex to spend £10+ in a single transaction in store until Sun 20 Dec. Some stores may have limited opening hours due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it's best to check (you can usually do this either by looking at recent social media posts or calling the store) to make sure it's open.

    3. Your £5 cashback should appear as a credit to your card within five working days, but could take as long as 90 days from the offer end date. If you've an Amex cashback card, you get your normal level of cashback as well.

You can only get the £5 cashback once in each store, but you can use this offer up to 10 times, so a maximum of £50 back on your shopping.

Additional cardholders must save this offer to their own card via the Amex website or app.

It's important to bear in mind that businesses will have social distancing measures in place and you may need to queue outside if it's a busy time. Different restrictions and tiers across the UK might mean that your local shops or restaurants are closed, meaning – unfortunately – you won’t be able to take advantage.
