If you click a link with an * to go through to a provider, we may get paid. This usually only happens if you get a product from it. This is what funds our team of journalists, and keeps us free to use. Yet there are two crucial things you need to know about this.
- This never impacts our editorial recommendations – if it's in, it's in there because we independently rate it best.
- You'll always get as good a deal (or better) than if you went direct.

Amex 'Shop Small' – free £5 cashback on up to three £15+ spends
At 1,000s of local stores, restaurants and more
ExpiredHere's a great incentive to support local businesses... most American Express credit or charge cardholders can get £5 cashback when spending £15 or more at participating local businesses from Friday 1 December until 11.59pm on Sunday 3 December.
Sadly, this is a shorter time frame than usual – in previous years this offer has lasted for around nine days, but it's just one weekend this year. Plus, you can only claim the bonus cashback a maximum of three times, whereas last year it was up to five.
To use the Shop Small offer, you'll need to save it to your card, which you can do any time from now until the promotion ends on Sunday 3 December. You're restricted to three lots of cashback, so a maximum of £15, and each will have to be gained by shopping at a different store.
Thousands of independent small shops, restaurants, cafes and more take part in Shop Small, but – as the name suggests – you can't use it at the big chains. It's in-store only, so purchases made online – even at a participating retailer – won't work.
However, it’s not an excuse to overspend, and as it’s a credit card, make sure you pay it off IN FULL each month to avoid interest. See our American Express tips and tricks guide for other ways to earn extra cashback or boost your points.
Which American Express cards qualify?
The 3x£5 cashback is available to all personal and small business Amex credit and charge cardholders registered in the UK, with a few exceptions – below is a list of cards which Amex says are definitely not eligible for the Shop Small offer:
- Corporate cards
- Business travel cards
- Prepaid cards
How to get it
1. Either go to American Express Shop Small, log in, see if the offer's available and save it to your card; or do it via the 'Offers' section of the Amex app (iOS/Android).
2. Look for participating retailers near you and from Friday 1 December use your Amex to spend £15+ in a single transaction in-store until 11.59pm on Sunday 3 December.
Other key info
- Your £5 cashback should appear as a credit to your card within 30 days, but could take as long as 90 days from the offer end date. If you've an Amex cashback card, you get your normal level of cashback as well.
- You can only get the £5 cashback once in each store, but you can use this offer up to three times.
- Additional cardholders must save this offer to their own card via the Amex website or app.
