Unlock pub & restaurant savings just by popping down the road, eg, Wetherspoon 38% less, Harvester 14% less
If you live near a couple of the same restaurant chain, believe it or not, you could pay as much as 38% extra for the same food from the same chain, compared with another branch less than half a mile away. Yet this is only based on the small sample I've been looking at recently, so there could be even bigger savings out there...
I discovered this by chance at a Hungry Horse in Chelmsford. As it happens, I’d recently had gammon and chips at a different Hungry Horse three miles down the road, and I fancied the same again. To my surprise, it cost £2 extra for exactly the same food I ate previously.
So I’ve done some digging and found similar price variance across other major chains, such as Wetherspoon, Harvester and TGI Fridays. It doesn't just apply to one item either – below I've picked out the strongest examples, but prices often vary across the entire menu.
What have I found?
Out of the 10 major pub and restaurant chains I've been looking at – comparing menu prices across 20 branches for each – I found seven had variations in pricing around the country (see full info on the table below). Only Nando's, Pizza Express and Pizza Hut kept the same pricing across all of their restaurants I examined.
Below, I've picked one popular menu item for each chain and showed what, if any, price disparity emerged. Of course, this isn't an exact science – and there won't always be price variance where you live – but you can hopefully use this info as a prompt to check before you go if you've more than one of the same chain nearby to choose from.

At The Richard John Blackler Wetherspoon pub in Liverpool city centre, freshly battered fish & chips is on the menu for £9.75, but only 0.3 miles away (about a six minute walk) is The Lime Kiln Wetherspoon which has the exact same battered fish & chips on the menu for £6.99 – £2.76 cheaper – plus you get a 'free' drink with it (including beer or wine) which can add up to another £3ish saving on top if you would have got a drink anyway.
How do I check for price variation?
Have you noticed that many online menus will only show prices if you select your local branch? That's because the prices vary nationwide. So before you go out to eat, it's worth checking online if one of the branches from the same chain close by is cheaper.
Of course, the difference isn’t always huge, and not everywhere will have price variances, but those who regularly dine out at the same chain could potentially save again and again by switching to a cheaper branch, if there’s one nearby.
Obviously, if it means driving and the extra fuel costs outweigh the savings, it wouldn’t be worthwhile. However, those lucky enough to live halfway between two of the same chain, with different prices, know which way to go.
I’d love to know how much you can save where you live, so if you try this, let me know in the comments below, on Twitter or Facebook.
