    How good is this deal?

Each model has been highly-reviewed at sites such as TechRadar (IF250UK)Good Housekeeping (IF250UKT) and Trusted Reviews (IF260UKTH).

We couldn't find these models being sold elsewhere, but when we checked on Tue 7 Jul, we did spot a lower spec 'IF200UK' on Amazon* for £325.99 – this model has a shorter run time (22 minutes) than all the other models.

A cheaper alternative to buying brand new is sometimes to look at refurbished models – we didn't manage to spot any but do keep an eye out on Shark's eBay outlet to spot a bargain.

  • Amazon 'summer sale' – how good is it?

Amazon 'summer sale' – how good is it?

Examples we've spotted include up to 30% off Lego, up to 20% off Fitbit

Around this time of year is when we'd normally see Amazon's 'Prime Day' – its hyped annual discount event – though this year it's gone for a more low-key 'summer sale' week instead, with Prime Day rumoured to be postponed till early October.

This week, Amazon is pumping out thousands of flash deals* until 11.59pm on Sun 12 Jul for its summer sale which began on Mon 6 Jul. Some deals will last for the duration of the promotion, some for only a day, and others – 'Lightning deals' – are posted as often as every five minutes and last for several hours, depending on stock.

Important: Don’t allow yourself to be sucked into buying something you don’t need or can’t afford. Always do your own price comparisons to ensure you're getting the best deal (see how to work out if it's a good deal below) – don’t just take Amazon's word for it.

    How good are the deals?

So far we've seen some strong discounts on Amazon products such as items in its Echo smart speaker range, with some being reduced by as much as 50% earlier in the week, and the cheapest we've seen them – though unlike Prime Day, the number of its own products it's discounting are very limited, and the big reductions so far have only lasted a day.

We've also spotted other popular brands in the sale such as up to 30% off Lego* and up to 20% off Fitbit*. Some products are also being price-matched at other retailers such as Argos and Currys.

Overall, we reckon it's a mixed bag so it's best to use our tips below to determine how good a deal really is – and remember, if you don't need it or can't afford it, don't buy it.

Here are some examples of popular items in the sale, last checked at 9.09am on Fri 10 Jul:

How to work out if it's a good deal

Amazon's not always cheapest for every item, so do your research before buying.

    • If there's an item you're looking for, use a 'shopbot' comparison tool such as Google ShoppingPrice Spy, and Pricerunner to find its cheapest online price. However, shopbots can leave out or favour some retailers.
    • Look out for potential price-matching from retailers such as Argos, Currys and John Lewis, who may offer a longer guarantee on some products for free.
    • Amazon prices go up and down regularly, so it's also worth checking if a price is at its lowest using the Amazon price tracker Camelcamelcamel – that way you’ll see if it is actually a deal at all.
