A railcard can put you on the right track for some decent savings, especially if you take the train often, as these cards get you one-third off most rail fares.
Railcards currently cost £35 for one-year or £80 for three years, but if you're new to either TrainPal* or Trip.com* third-party booking sites, you can use a code to get 25% off a digital railcard (one that's stored on your phone). That'll make it £26.25 for a one-year railcard, or £60 for three years. If you aren't new to either site, you can still get 10% off.
There are a couple of hoops to go through, as you may also need to buy any train ticket (no minimum spend) to activate the railcard, but we explain how it works below.
Note: The railcard can only be accessed via the TrainPal or Trip.com app (depending on which site you purchase from). You can't transfer it to the official Railcard app after purchasing.
To get 25% off a digital railcard...
Via TrainPal*, use the code MSE25 (if buying through its app you'll also need to purchase a train ticket to activate the railcard as explained below – if buying through its website you won't need to do this)
Via Trip.com*, use the code MSETRIPRC25 (you'll also need to buy any train ticket to activate the railcard as explained below)
Remember, you need to be a new customer of the site you purchase through.
How the 25% off code works
Sign up for a free account at TrainPal* or Trip.com*. If you're given the option to enter the code while signing up, you can – pick the correct code above and enter it in the 'Promo code (optional)' box.
Once signed in, select the Account/Member icon and then 'Promo Codes'. Or in the app, go to the 'Account' tab and tap 'Vouchers & Promo Code'.
If you entered the code while signing up, your 25% off voucher will appear here. If you didn't, enter it in the 'Enter promo code' box ('Enter code' in the app) to add it to this section.
Go to the TrainPal* or Trip.com* digital railcards page and choose the railcard you want. The discount should be automatically applied.
Important: If buying through the TrainPal app or Trip.com apps, you'll need to activate your railcard by purchasing any train ticket through the site you bought your railcard from within 180 days. Railcards bought via the TrainPal or Trip.com website (not app) don't require this and will be automatically activated after purchase. Neither site charges a booking fee, and there's no minimum spend, so if you need to buy a ticket to activate your railcard, you could just buy the cheapest possible fare. If you don't activate your railcard (this only applies to those purchased through the TrainPal app or via Trip.com's app), you'll be issued an automatic refund.
The code can only be used to buy one of the following digital railcards: 16-17 Saver, 16-25 Railcard, 26-30 Railcard, Family & Friends' Railcard, Network Railcard, Senior Railcard and Two Together Railcard. The offer excludes the Disabled Person's Railcard and Veterans' Railcard. The offer's limited to one railcard per account.
The codes are valid until 11.59pm on Wednesday 31 December.
In addition to the railcard offer above, you can also get 5% off your first UK train ticket purchase – so you could use this discount when buying the train ticket needed to activate your railcard when bought via the TrainPal app or Trip.com site and app.
For TrainPal, you can use the same code as above, MSE25
For Trip.com, the 5% off code is MSETRIP5 and this can be stacked with the railcard code above
You don't have to purchase a railcard to use the 5% off code – it's open to anyone new to TrainPal/Trip.com making their first UK train ticket purchase until 11.59pm on Wednesday 31 December.
Existing TrainPal or Trip.com user? Get 10% off a digital railcard and 2% off your first train ticket
The below codes get a one-year railcard for £27 instead of £30, or £63 for three years instead of £70.
For TrainPal*, enter the code MSE25
For Trip.com*, enter the code MSETRIPRC10 for 10% off a digital railcard, and the code MSETRIP2 for 2% off your first train ticket purchase
See our Cheap train tickets guide for more ways to save on rail fares.
Update, Wednesday 29 January at 9.30am: All codes have now been redeemed.
Travel booking platform Trip.com* is offering 10% off all flight bookings originating in the UK via our MSE Blagged code. There are 2,000 codes available. To be fair to everyone (not just those who open the MSE email earliest), we delayed its go-live time.
The deal ends at 11.59pm on Thursday 13 February or after 2,000 redemptions, whichever's sooner. It's valid on trips until 14 January 2026. Return flights are eligible too, so long as you fly out from a UK airport on the outward leg.
Trip.com pulls prices in from the airlines so the prices should usually be similar to going direct. Though always compare using price comparison sites first and be aware other booking platforms may have their own discounts running. We like comparison sites Kayak*, Momondo* and Google Flights, plus there's Expedia* and others.
The code doesn't apply to taxes (see more on taxes below) and cannot be stacked with Trip.com's '£10 off for new app users' offer. It can be used three times per user. A booking can include a maximum of nine passengers. It can be used on any travel class, eg, Economy, Business.
When we looked on Wednesday 15 January, we found these deals when using the code:
London to Amsterdam in July, return – £289.38 (£304.38 before code)
Belfast to Barcelona in June, one way – £382.53 (£412.33 before code)
Manchester to Bangkok in May, return – £571.50 (£583 before code)
London to Cancun in May, return – £781.09 (£808.79 before code)
London to New York in April, one way – £995.32 (£1,074.82 before code)
Edinburgh to Miami (business class) in Jan, one way – £1,678.98 (£1,827.58 before code)
Trip.com works with over 680 international airlines, including British Airways, Easyjet, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, KLM, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa and Wizz Air.
What's more, many airlines are currently in the midst of their January sales, and you can stack those existing savings with the MSE Blagged code. For example:
Easyjet's Big Orange Sale offers 'up to 20% off' flights until Tuesday 4 February.
British Airways has deals on various flights until Tuesday 28 January.
Jet2 is offering '20% off all flights' for myJet2 members (it's free to sign up), when you book 'until further notice'.
Flights may get snapped up quickly and these examples might not last. Go quick if there's a route you want.
Be aware these are prices for flights only – you may need to pay for extras, such as luggage.
Airport, airline and fuel taxes are already added to the price of the flight. They're excluded from the discount. This is why your discounted price isn't exactly 10% less than the full price.
For flight delays/cancellations with 24 hours' notice or more, Trip.com will contact you to arrange an alternative flight or refund. If you need to get in touch, you can call Trip.com or start a live chat.
For notification of delays/cancellations within the 24 hours before the flight, the airline will contact you directly. If you need to contact your airline, browse our table for its contact details.
For more like this, see our Can you find £4 flights with Trip.com? deal and our Easyjet tricks and Cheap flights guides.
Don't forget to check your flight on the airline's website too
After booking with Trip.com, it's worth checking your flight directly with the airline's website, as it may have the most up to date information on things like check-in and flight changes. You'll usually need your flight number, which you can find in your Trip.com booking confirmation email.
Eg, for Ryanair you'll need to verify your booking directly via its Ryanair verification hub. If you don't verify, and you then check in online, you might need to report to the Ryanair desk at the airport at least two hours before departure and pay a fee.
Travel booking platform Trip.com* has launched its Black Friday sale. Some offers have already started; others begin on Friday 29 November. All are due to end on Tuesday 3 December 2024.
It's offering a limited number of money-off codes for up to £100 off with selected airlines, when you book via its app. You can stack the money-off code with a £10 discount all new app users get for their first three app bookings. On the downside, there are only a handful of codes available for each airline, which can be claimed on a first come, first served basis – so go quickly if this is something you're after.
There's also 'up to 50% off' European train journeys for bookings via the website and app.

Important: Don't get caught up in the Black Friday hype, and keep our money mantras in mind – only ever buy what you need and can afford. You should always do your own price comparisons to ensure you’ve found the best deal available – don't simply take a retailer's word for it.
