1 Current Deal

For Trip.com newbies

You'll need to purchase any train ticket within 180 days to activate the railcard

If you frequently travel by train, a railcard gets one-third off most tickets (or 50% off for the 16-17 Saver). The majority are £35 for one-year, but if you're new to third-party booking site Trip.com*, we've blagged a code to get £10 off a digital railcard (one that's stored on your phone) until Monday 31 August. The code makes a one-year railcard £25 (or £70 for three years).

There are a couple of hoops to jump through, but we explain how it works below.

Which railcards can you buy?

The code is valid on the following railcards: 16-17 Saver, 16-25, 26-30, Family & Friends, Network, Senior, and Two Together. The offer's limited to one railcard per account.

The Disabled Persons' Railcard and Veterans' Railcard are excluded.

Buying a Family & Friends Railcard? It can only be shown on the Trip.com account it was purchased from, so the second person cannot add the card to their own phone and they cannot use it independently.

Buying a 16-17 Saver? These remain valid for a full year from the purchase date, even if you turn 18 during that year.

How to claim £10 off your railcard

  • Sign up for a free account at Trip.com*. If you're given the option to enter the code while signing up, you can – it's MSETRIP10 – enter it in the 'Promo code (optional)' box.

  • If you don't enter the code at sign-up, select the Account/Member icon and then 'Promo Codes'. Or in the app, go to the 'Account' tab and tap 'Vouchers & Promo Code'. Add MSETRIP10 in the 'Enter promo code' box ('Enter code' in the app) to add it to this section.

  • Go to the Trip.com digital railcards page* and choose the railcard you want. The £10 off should be automatically applied.

You'll need to claim this code by 11.59pm on Monday 31 August.

Important. You must buy a train ticket within 180 days to validate the railcard.

Trip.com doesn't charge a booking fee, and there's no minimum spend, so when buying a ticket to activate your railcard, you could just buy the cheapest possible fare. For example, we found a ticket for £1.60 from Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town.

If you don't activate your railcard, you'll be issued an automatic refund.

Other useful info

Use Apple Pay? When purchasing your subsequent train ticket to activate the railcard, if you use Apple Pay as your payment method, ensure you purchase with the email associated with your railcard. Occasionally Apple Pay may generate an anonymous relay email address when you login via Apple ID, and this email won't be recognised alongside your railcard purchase.

Not new to Trip.com? Existing users can enter the code MSETRIPRC10 for 10% off (£31.50 for one-year or £72 for three years).

New to TrainPal? If you're new to booking site TrainPal, you can get 23% off a digital railcard. This makes a one-year railcard £26.95 and a three-year one £61.60, saving you significantly more on three-year railcards than the Trip.com offer.

Via code. Requires you to purchase any train ticket to activate the railcard

If you frequently travel by train, you can stack these two discount codes to make a rail-ly good saving...

Most railcards cost £35 for one-year or £80 for three years, but if you're new to third-party booking site Trip.com*, you can use a code to get £8 off a digital railcard (one that's stored on your phone). That'll make it £27 for a one-year railcard, or £72 for three years.

There are a couple of hoops to go through, as you also need to buy any train ticket (no minimum spend) to activate the railcard, but we explain how it works below. We've also got a code to get £2 off a train ticket booked via Trip.com, and you can bundle these two discount codes together.

Note: The railcard can only be accessed via the Trip.com app which you'll need to download. You can't transfer it to the official Railcard app after purchasing, nor can you add to your digital wallet (Apple or Android).

The code can only be used to buy one of the following digital railcards: 16-17 Saver, 16-25 Railcard, 26-30 Railcard, Family & Friends' Railcard, Network Railcard, Senior Railcard and Two Together Railcard. The offer excludes the Disabled Person's Railcard and Veterans' Railcard. The offer's limited to one railcard per account.

  • Go to the Trip.com digital railcards page* and choose the railcard you want. The discount should be automatically applied.

If you don't activate your railcard, you'll be issued an automatic refund.

Note: When purchasing your subsequent train ticket to activate the railcard, if you use Apple Pay as your payment method, ensure you purchase with the email associated with your railcard. Occasionally Apple Pay may generate an anonymous relay email address when you login via Apple ID, and this email won't be recognised alongside your railcard purchase.

Maximise the discount by getting £2 off your first train ticket purchase

In addition to the railcard offer above, you can also get £2 off your first UK train ticket purchase with the code MSETRAIN2 – you could use this discount when buying the train ticket needed to activate your railcard.

If you missed out, there's still a way to save....You can get 35% off one-year or three-year railcards with the code: MSERC35 until 11.59pm on Friday 28 November. Important: This deal is only valid for newbies to the Trip.com app (you can't redeem it online or if you're an existing customer). With this deal, the railcard can only be accessed via Trip.com's app – you can't transfer it to the official Railcard app after purchasing.

Free protection for all shopping!

There's a little-known piece of legislation that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. 'Section 75' of the Consumer Credit Act means your plastic must protect anything you buy for more than £100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust, you can still get your money back.
And although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards, there is something else to fall back on if you've paid using a debit card, or used a credit card for a purchase under £100. Known as Chargeback, this is part of banks' and card companies' internal rules and not a legal requirement. Read full details of Section 75 or Chargeback, plus how to claim, in our guides.
What the * means above
If a link has an * by it, that means it is an affiliated link and therefore it helps MoneySavingExpert stay free to use, as it is tracked to us. If you go through it, it can sometimes result in a payment or benefit to the site. It's worth noting this means the third party used may be named on any credit agreements.
You shouldn’t notice any difference and the link will never negatively impact the product. Plus the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by these links. We aim to look at all available products. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the top deal, it is still included in exactly the same way, just with a non-paying link.
