Electricity customers switched their supplier a record 5.8 million times last year, new figures reveal.

The number – which equates to roughly one in five consumers – is a 6% increase on 2017's record figures when there were 5.5 million switches.

The data shows that, on average, there were almost half a million domestic and business electricity switches every month in 2018, continuing the trend of year-on-year increases in energy switching.

And the figures, from trade association Energy UK, which only cover electricity switches, show that in December alone, 464,378 switched supplier, up 10% on December 2017. Nearly 98,962 of these were to small and mid-sized suppliers.

Use our Cheap Energy Club to get constantly cheap gas and electricity.

How can I switch?

Switching provider is straightforward. You'll get the same gas and electricity – essentially all that changes is the company that bills you.

You can find your cheapest tariff using our Cheap Energy Club.

Or, if service is more important to you than just grabbing the cheapest, you can use our 'good' or 'superb' service Cheap Energy Club filters.

If you'd rather just stick with a name you know, you can use our 'big name supplier' filter.

And even if you're worried about switching firm, many can still save – though not nearly as much – by simply switching tariff with their current provider, using our 'my current supplier' filter.
