Lloyds Banking Group to close a further 66 branches from October - here's a full list, plus alternative options
Lloyds Banking Group has announced more bank branch closures with a further 66 outlets set to close across England, Northern Ireland, and Wales between October this year and February 2023. The closures consist of 48 Lloyds Bank branches and 18 Halifax outlets.
The move follows an announcement from the banking group in May that 28 outlets would close between August and November this year. It also comes after the banking group's closure of 48 branches between January and April and an announcement in March that a further 60 branches would close between June and September.
Collectively, the four announcements mean customers will lose access to 133 Lloyds Bank branches, 50 Halifax outlets, and 19 Bank of Scotland branches by the end of January 2023. The banking group said visits to the latest 66 branches due to close have fallen by 60% on average in the past five years.
Lloyds Banking Group isn't alone though - Barclays is to close 55 branches by the end of the year, TSB closed 70 branches between April and June, and HSBC will close 69 branches between July and October.
Alternative ways to bank face-to-face with Lloyds
Lloyds Banking Group said customers of all branches set to close will have at least one free-to-use ATM within half a mile and a Post Office within 1.1 miles.
Here are some alternative ways to access face-to-face banking services if your local branch is closing:
Check if Lloyds' 'mobile branch' service is available in your area
Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland both run a mobile branch service that enables customers in England, Scotland and Wales to access certain services in their local area at specific times and dates each month. You can check if a nearby town is covered on Lloyds's website or on Bank of Scotland's website.
Some of the services available under the mobile branch service are:
Cash/cheque deposits.
Manage standing orders and direct debits.
Order foreign currency.
Pay bills.
Send money outside the UK.
Withdraw cash.
Some in limited areas may be able to speak to Lloyds staff in 'banking hubs'
This service is currently only available in Cambuslang near Glasgow and in Rochford, Essex. These hubs are open to customers of all major banks and you can use the service to:
Get and return currency.
Pay cash in or take money out – including coins.
Pay in cheques and pay bills.
If you specifically want to speak to a Lloyds Banking Group representative, a community banker will be in the Cambuslang hub on Thursdays and in the Rochford hub on Tuesdays.
Separately, Lloyds Banking Group has a community manager available in the Scilly Isles every other Thursday, though this service will close at the end of September.
You can access some Lloyds and Halifax services via the Post Office
Lloyds Banking Group customers can also access certain services from any of the Post Office's 11,500 branches. Use the Post Office's branch finder tool to locate your nearest. Services available include the following:
Cash/cheque deposits.
Withdraw money.
Check your balance.
If you need branch access and your Lloyds Banking Group outlet is closing, consider switching
If you no longer want to stay with Lloyds Banking Group (or you don't have a Post Office close by), you might want to consider switching to a bank that does have a local branch nearby – although bear in mind there's no guarantee that too won't close.
Banks with branches that currently have switching incentives include:
Nationwide - get up to £125 for switching. Nationwide FlexDirect is offering existing customers £125 and newbies £100 (though there is a trick to get the full £125). You can't have had the bonus before and you must set up two or more direct debits to be eligible though there's no minimum pay-in. Nationwide has pledged to leave no town or city currently served by the building society without a branch until at least 2024.
See our Best Bank Accounts guide for the full list of banks offering switching incentives.
Some may want to consider setting up online banking
Of course, if you want to switch to banking online or via an app, Bank of Scotland, Halifax and Lloyds have step-by-step guides on how to set up online and app banking.
