Money Moral Dilemma

Every week, the Money Tips email features a real-life Money Moral Dilemma (MMD for short). They're intended to encourage debate and, as such, they're usually among the most discussed threads each week.

Should my tenant pay for missing the gas engineer's appointment?

I'm a landlord and have to get a yearly gas safety certificate for the property I let. With my tenant's agreement, I gave the gas safety engineer her telephone number, so they could arrange the visit. On the day itself, my tenant forgot the appointment and was out at the arranged time, and the engineer has now issued a call-out charge to cover his time. But who should pay: me or the tenant?

On our charity shop thread, Working_Mum wrote: "I think I was meant to buy these! I am going to a wedding in June and need something a bit glam and higher than I have currently in my shoe choices (the trouser suit I'm wearing is a tad long for me) - anyway I went into town and met my mum and sister for an impromptu mooch - found these Carvella wedges for £8 in the local Cancer Research shop. Further investigation shows RRP at £89! They fit me perfectly and I can walk in them! Result!"

Your two cents

Have you ever paid over the odds for a product because you were too embarrassed to query the price? That's the question posed by mikcatta this week. Describing their experience of being taken by surprise by the cost of an Americano, they said: "If I had seen the price ahead of time, I might of walked down the road."
