Happy New Year 2010!
Though keep the hatches battened down...

In 2008, I wrote "with the credit crunch biting, house prices teetering and the economy wobbling it's likely to be the worst financial year in a long time" and last year I said pretty much the same.

Now we hear the recession's due to end, yet all that really means is the economy's stopped shrinking - not things are back to how they were. It's likely to be a slow recovery, and there's still a while till we're out of the woods, so plan for the worst and hope for the best...

Use this holiday period to protect yourself

  • Find out if you spend more than you earn. There's nothing more important than staying within your means, if you don't know whether you do, the budget planner is designed to answer just that question.

  • Ensure you're getting what you're entitled to. The benefits net spreads wider than you think, in limited circumstances even families with combined income of £66,000 may be entitled. Give yourself a five minute benefits check up.

  • Check your mortgage deal. If interest rates rise as some predict, tracker and variable deal costs will shoot up. Ensure you know when your mortgage deal ends, see the free remortgage guide & the Cheap Mortgage Finding guide.

  • Get the best deal for everything. Many people's knee-jerk money worry reaction is to cut back. Yet always first try to cut your bills without cutting back; if you've not done it yet give yourself a full Money Makeover.

Just a short tip this holiday week - we'll be back with full aplomb in the New Year

The Ones Not To Miss

New top online 0% for 15 months on existing debts
Top credit card balance transfer deals if you've already had Virgin/MBNA card
The current longest 0% balance transfer deal is Virgin's* 16 months with a 2.98% fee (after it rises to 18.6% APR) for new customers. Yet as it's now been top for two years anyone who's used it and still has debt remaining needs an alternative. Next best: Current account customers at HSBC*, RBS* and Natwest* can all get 0% for 15 months, with a tad lower 2.9% fee (all followed by 16.9% APR). New deal: If none of those suit, the Santander credit card gives 0% for 15 months for a slightly higher one-off 3% fee (then 15.9% APR) and has recently started accepting applications online. Long Term Low Rate: If you didn't pay off your debt within the 0% deal last time, consider locking into a long term low rate (so you needn't switch again), shift debts to Barclaycard Simplicity* and you get 6.8% APR until all the debt shifted is repaid in FULL. For all the details and more alternatives read the Updated Guide: Best Balance Transfers Related: Cheap Loans, Credit Card Shuffle

Flog your old mobile for max cash - £100s possible
Got a new mobile for Xmas, instantly find who pays the most for the old one with MobileValuer.com tool
There's a vicious fight out there between the mobile buying companies to try to get you to flog them your old phone. Yet be warned the value differences are huge e.g. a Nokia N73 ranges from £40 to £71. Find who pay the most: To help, use MSE's unique Mobile Selling Comparison tool; it instantly tells you what each of the main sites will pay. You can get up to £150 for some handsets, but of course others are virtually worthless, however it's worth a quick try. How mobile buying sites work: Once you agree to sell, they send a freepost bag for it, you post it, they give you the cash. No need to buy rail season tickets early...
Prices are likely to fall slightly if you wait until after the 2nd Jan
Normally at the end of Dec we suggest people grab rail season tickets before the 2 January price rise. Yet as price changes depend on inflation, and as this year that's been negative most regulated fares including season tickets will actually FALL by 0.4%. The main exceptions are South Eastern and West Yorkshire 'Metro' fares, which are allowed to, and do, rise by more. Check now to see: Go to National Rail's Season Ticket Calc and compare the price of tickets starting now and after 2 Jan to see which is best - though the saving's likely to be small. Other train fares will rise: Unregulated fares, including most off-peak and advanced-fare tickets, are on the up. Most London TFL travelcards are frozen, though there are some increases (see whether you're affected at LondonTravelWatch). Full info on how to get the cheapest fares in the Related Guide: Cheap Trains Related Deals: Train & Coach Promotions

Cheapest winter sports travel insurance
Annual ski policies now from £26 for singles in Europe, £37 for couples/families
If you're going skiing you may be able to get an annual policy which includes winter sports while hardly adding to the price. Top picks (Europe only): It's possible to get the VirginMoney* annual policy with winter sports policy for £26 for singles and Flexicover* is £37 for couples. Yet don't go direct, these prices are only if you go via comparison site Moneysupermarket (MSM), the links take you there. Top picks (worldwide): For single travellers, Elect (White Horse)* is £33 but has limited trip length & high excesses; for families Protectyourbubble* costs £54. Again, both are only available via MSM. Single Trip Cover: If you just want a one off policy try comparisons at MoneySupermarket*, Confused.com* or Squaremouth*. How's the cover? Most annual policies only cover basic skiing & snow-boarding; so go off-piste, or do more adventurous pursuits and you're often not covered, always read the small print before buying. For super-robust adventure sport policies, try the BMC, which'll cover most activities though at a higher cost. QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q. My credit report shows searches for saving/insurance quotes, does this affect my ability to apply for credit?

A:   Not everything that appears on your credit file is visible to lenders. Some savings providers and insurance companies carry out a quick credit check when they provide you with an account or quote, usually to verify your identity or address.

This is almost always classed as an 'unrecorded enquiry' meaning while you see it, lenders don't so it doesn't impact your credit score. Full info in the Credit Rating guide.
