Did bad weather cost you? Your rights
Wages, trains, benefits, energy, boilers and more

The big chill's caused chaos the country over. Though if it's cost you, you may be able to get money back. Here's a quick Q&A...

Q. If I can't get to work can they dock my pay?
Yes. Though many companies will pay you provided you've made a reasonable effort to get in (those paid hourly may fare worse). If they're docking your pay, consider asking if it can count as annual leave.

Q. What if my train is (was) cancelled / delayed?
ALWAYS keep the receipts. Arrive over an hour late (or not at all) and the Association of Train Operating Companies says you're usually entitled to a full refund on advance tickets. Even if only 30 mins late you can sometimes get half back. Claim forms are at most stations.

Q. My flight's been cancelled/delayed. Will I be reimbursed?
Under EU regulations, you're entitled to a full refund on unused tickets if cancelled at short notice. If you're delayed by over five hours or alternative transport is not suitable, you can choose not to travel and get a full refund. Most major airlines abide by these rules so contact yours to claim. For more, including delays when you DO travel see the Cold Weather Rights news story.

Q. Am I due cold weather payments?
Those on pension credit & some benefits are entitled to £25/week when the temp's below 0°C for 7 days. See if you're eligible in the Cold Payment forum note. Don't confuse this with winter fuel payments for the over 60s.

Q. How much will the cold snap add to my energy bills?
As you'll see in the full note below, it could've added up to £70. Yet Compare 'n' Switch and you could save more than that.

Q. Bust pipes or boiler, what can I do?
If your pipes burst check your home insurance, you may be covered. For boilers, see if you're eligible for a new boiler grant using the EST's grant checker. For cheap boiler cover, use comparison sites like Uswitch.com* to get the cheapest price and check Direct Line, which it misses, that currently has 15% off. Full info in the Boiler Cover guide.

Get 5.6% Loan equivalent - half the standard cheapest
Use special credit cards to get NEW 5.9% for life or 0% for 16mths loan equivalents to save £100s
If you need to borrow, even the cheapest loans can charge up to 16%, yet used right you can get a loan equivalent for half the cost. How it works: A few cards let new cardholders pay cash into your bank account which you can use as a loan, leaving you owing the card the money. Top Short Term: The Virgin* card is 0% for 16 mths with a 4% fee (slightly higher than for normal transfers) so it wins provided you can repay in that time (it's 18.6% after). For £3,000 with the fee it's the equivalent of 5.6% interest; the cheapest loan's 13.9% APR. Top Medium Term: The new MBNA Rate for Life* deal lets you shift debt to it at 5.9% for life (ie until fully repaid) for a 2% fee. Borrow £4,500 over 5 years and it's equivalent to 6.7% interest compared to the top cheapest loan at 13.9% APR. Warning! Loans are fixed length, but with credit cards you repay what you like above the min. To truly replicate a loan's enforced discipline, set a repayment to clear debts in a fixed time, e.g. 3 years, and set up a direct debit. Plus NEVER use these cards for spending or the cost rockets. Cheapest Loans over £5k: Alliance & Leicester* is 8.7% APR up to £7.5k and 7.8% APR above, Nationwide* is 7.6% but you need its current account. Energy Bills £300/year poss. savings - if you've not switched in 6 mths
The big freeze has added £70 to many's gas & electricity costs. Switch to offset high usage
Estimates put the additional cost due to the cold spell at £50-£70, yet this is dwarfed by the savings possible for most homes simply by switching to a cheaper tariff. Hidden price war: If you've not switched recently, your tariff hasn't got cheaper and you've been missing out on reaping the reward from the energy companies' battle to be the cheapest online tariff. While the avg bill is £1,200/year the cheapest can be £890 for the same usage - a mammoth difference. To see if and how much you can save you need to... Compare, switch & get cashback: (cashback only specifically via these special links) Top Pick Comparison: Energyhelpline* pays £15 cashback per switch. New top 3.3% AER easy access savings
The new top account if you've £1,000 to £10,000 - up to 4 penalty-free withdrawals per year
The Coventry BS* 1st Class Postal account (min. £1,000) is new top easy-access deal, if you've less than £10,000. It pays 3.3% AER, though 1.3% of that's a year-long bonus, so when it ends consider ditching & switching. It allows four withdrawals a year, make more and you lose 50 days interest, so only do it if you won't access it more than that. Over £10,000 to save: The Ulster Bank pathway account pays 3.35%, including a 0.75% bonus for 6 mths. If you've over £25,000 Investec is 3.3% but clearly promises to match the rate of the top 5 accounts, meaning it guarantees relatively high rates - but it needs 3mths notice to withdraw. Top from £1: The AA pays 3.15% AER, though a mammoth 2.65% of this is a year long bonus so ensure you'll ditch and switch at that point. Free £100 with 0% overdraft is back
New customers get the cash, 0% overdraft and free travel insurance.

The tap has yet again been opened on the 'on-off' free £100 switching bonus for new customers of Alliance & Leicester's* fees-free Premier account. It's therefore the new best-buy for everyone who's overdrawn and most who are in-credit. It gives free annual Europe travel insurance, a year's 0% overdraft up to £1,000, and 0.5% interest if you're in-credit (up to £2,500). Who's eligible? You must pass its credit score, earn over £6,050 and pay your salary directly into the account. Existing A&L, Abbey & Cahoot current account customers can't get it. Alternative In-Credit Deals: Strong customer service bank First Direct* gives new switchers £100 too and a small 0% overdraft, but requires min. £23,500 salary and doesn't pay in-credit interest. Alternatively Halifax* pays £5 each month if you pay a salary of £15,000 in but that'd take over 18mths to beat the £100 bonus. QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q. I've managed to start the year debt free and want to start putting money away each month. Is a Regular Savings Account better than a normal savings account? Craig Brown, by email.

Martin's A: YAY! Well done starting the year debt free. The aim of saving, is find the account that pays you the highest interest after tax; and once you fill that up go for the next best.

Start with a cash-ISA where you can save up to £3,600 (£5,100 if over 50) per year tax free. Even though rates aren't high now (top is 2.65%) the fact it stays tax free year after year means its worth it for the long run (see Top Cash ISAs).

Next is a top Regular Saver - these pay up to 5% but are taxed - the problem is they only let you put a limited amount in and you usually must contribute every month. Finally, if you've more, or can't save each month, use a standard top savings account (top 3.3%)..
