Boost your credit score
The top 10 things everyone needs to know

While headlines shriek "mortgage rates at record lows" and we've seen the longest-ever 0% credit cards, these days unless you're super-creditworthy you won't get 'em. What's more, the new 'representative APRs' on loans & cards mean only 51% of accepted customers must get the advertised rate, so a poor score can mean you pay more. Here are the 'need to knows':

1. You DON'T have a credit rating and there's no blacklist. Ignore credit agencies' attempts to flog you your specific 'score'. It means little as each lender scores you differently (for each product). As well as your credit file, they also look at application info & any past dealings they've had with you (see the Credit Rating guide). So a rejection from one isn't a rejection from all. So, the aim's to don some credit-rouge to make yourself credit-pretty.

2. The 10 credit rating must-knows What they really know about you...What's on your credit file? Addresses, CCJs/bankruptcies, 6 years' credit history, credit applications, some utility history. What's not on it? Criminal records, parking or speeding fines, your race/religion, whether you've checked your file (you see it, lenders don't), savings, salary, CSA info, student loans, credit rejections, PPI or bank charge reclaims.

3. Space out applications. Lots in a short time make you look desperate for credit and thus a worrying risk. So spread 'em out and prioritise. Always check files after a rejection before applying elsewhere. If there's an error, even if it's fixed later, lots of apps in the meantime could hurt.

4. Check you're on the electoral roll NOW. Not being on it is the single biggest credit kibosh (Join the electoral roll). If you're a non-EU citizen, you can send your notice of permanent residency to the credit agencies.

5. Check your file for free (or get paid £5 to do it). Ensure you check your file for errors every year and before any major applications. The credit agencies try to charge you for it, yet there's a way to Check Your Credit File Free and even get PAID cashback.

6. Use same job description & mobile number. Consistency and stability are crucial when filling in applications. While it won't hurt your credit score, it can trigger hidden fraud warnings. So if nothing's changed, use the same language on all applications.

7. How to (re)build your credit score. Credit scoring works by using your past behaviour to predict how you'll act. So those with no or poor histories often get rejected. Perversely, the best trick to gradually rebuild a score is get a 'bad credit' card, spend a little on it each month (repaying IN FULL so the hideous APR's are irrelevant) to show you're responsible.

Currently, poor scorers (eg, some CCJs/defaults, not bankrupts) may get the Capital One Classic* which (via this link) is 0% interest until Jan 2012, though a horrid 34.9% representative APR afterwards. So at the very least ensure any debts clear by then. Full options, help & warnings see the Best 'Bad Credit' Card guide and Official APR Examples.

8. Forget marriage or holding hands, only joint finances count. Marriage or living together is irrelevant, the only way someone else's history can affect yours is if you've joint mortgage or bank accounts (joint credit cards don't exist). So if one partner's history's poor, keep finances separate. Plus, if you split and are now financially independent, ask credit agencies to de-link you.

9. Old addresses & unused cards are a danger. Even something as innocuous as an unused, but not closed, contract mobile phone account (which counts as credit) with the wrong address on it can kill applications, so check 'em all. Plus cancel unused cards, as it can look like you have access to more credit, making you less appealing (see the Cancel Old Credit Cards guide).

10. Fight incorrect info. If your file info's wrong 1) Check at the other agencies to see if it's there too; 2) Write to the company the problem's with & ask it to correct the inaccuracy; 3) If it won't, write to each agency to add a 'notice of correction' explaining your side; 4) If necessary, complain to the free Financial Ombudsman, which can order companies to correct errors.

This is just the beginning ... To seriously boost your score & understand what banks know about you, see the full Credit Rating guide and Credit Checker Tool.

THE ONES NOT TO MISS

New 3.25% easy access savings. Best in 20 months
Plus new top 3.07% easy access cash ISA | Check what you're earning now - and boost it

Savings rates have been creeping up for a few months, and a new deal means easy access rates are at a 20+ month high. So if you've cash stashed it's time to boost the return. All providers below have full £85k Savings Safety protection.

  • New top 3.07% tax-free cash ISA (the place to start). Cash ISAs are just tax-free savings accounts, and while rates are lower than normal savings (see below), tax-free interest means you keep more in your pocket (eg, a 3.07% ISA is equivalent to 3.8% for basic rate taxpayers on a standard account, 5.1% higher rate). Over 16s can put £5,340 per tax year in a cash ISA, so if you haven't opened one since April, start here.

This week, West Brom BS* (via a comparison site, use this link) launched a 3.07% AER easy access deal (min £1,000) for new cash & transfers; 1.07% of this is a year-long bonus so diarise to ditch & transfer when the rate plummets. The top clean (no bonus) deal's Northern Rock's* e-ISA (min £1) at 3.05% AER, though it's a variable rate so could change. Full options in Top Cash ISAs.New top 3.25% easy access savings
  • New top 3.25% AER savings - best in 20 months The online-only Derbyshire BS Netsaver's upped its rate to 3.25% AER (was 3.18%) and allows unlimited free withdrawals but must be opened by cheque. Next highest's its sister Nationwide's* 3.12% AER, though withdraw more than once a year, and you lose interest for the month of each subsequent withdrawal. These accounts include year-long bonus rates, meaning the return is likely to plummet after, so diarise to ditch and switch then.

For more top rates including clean (no bonus) deals & fixed savings, where lock cash away, and you can earn up to 4.6%, see the Updated Guide: Top Savings Related: Cash ISAs, Cash ISA Transfers, Regular Savers, Where to Start Saving

Free & cheap wills: Will-Aid, book ASAP
Get a solicitor-drafted will at no or low cost this autumn - but you need to book now

Dying will-less won't hurt you, but could compound your loved-ones' grief with a host of practical & financial issues (eg, the woman who stopped (ML) after her husband died suddenly and the bank had frozen his assets, so she couldn't pay the mortgage). It's especially important if you've assets such as a home, savings or business. Our updated Free & Cheap Wills guide has all the info you need, here's a taster...

  • Free & cheap willsBook for Will-Aid now. Every Nov, over 1,000 solicitors UK-wide take part, yet it gets booked up quickly so arrange it now to avoid missing out (see Will-Aid info in the guide). They draft a will in the hope you'll make a donation. While you're not obliged to, the suggested £85 is far cheaper than you'd normally pay a solicitor. The money's split between nine charities including Save the Children & Age UK.
  • Free Wills Month for the over 55s. A smaller number of solicitors in England and Wales also take part in Free Wills Month. Here, there's nothing to pay upfront but it's hoped you leave a bequest (cash in your will) to one of the campaign charities. Cancer Research UK & The Stroke Association (over 60s only) offer similar schemes.

Broadband speed - test yours now
Plus free broadband with line rental | Or standalone broadband for under a tenner

It's a farce. Broadband companies advertise "up to" speeds that often bear no resemblance to what you get. The rules just launched to fix this are a damp squib. From next April, 10% must get the speed claimed (see new broadband rules), but what about the remaining sloth-cursed 90%? Full help in Cheap Broadband, here's a taster...

  • Broadband speedCheck your broadband speed: Many factors affect speed: proximity to the phone exchange, the number of people competing for bandwidth, and 'traffic shaping' (where providers slow speeds during busy hours). Test your speed*.
  • Is cheaper & better available where you live? If a provider doesn't operate at your exchange you won't get its cheap deal, use our Broadband Finder Tool to filter out those that work in your area. Then try this Broadband StreetStats* tool, which can help indicate likely speeds from a variety of providers.
  • Sub-£10/month broadband: Plusnet* is cheapest at £6.49/month plus £25 connection, with a 10GB download limit, (fine, unless you do lots of downloading/online TV viewing). For unlimited downloads, O2* is £17.50/month + £25 connection, but until 7 Oct there's 3 mths free and £50 cashback (via this link). All factored in, that's an avg £11/month over the year's contract, plus big further reduction for existing O2 mobile customers. Full info & best-buys in the Cheap Broadband guide.
  • Free broadband (effectively) with line rental: TalkTalk Essentials* offers line rental & broadband (40GB limit) for £17.05/month, but sign-up via this link and you get a £60 Tesco voucher. Factor this in (as cash) over the year's contract and that's just £12.05/month, less than BT standard line rental, so you effectively get the broadband for nowt. See the Cheap Home Phones guide for more.

Slash pet insurance costs & avoid huge vet bills
The average cost of a cat or dog over its lifetime is now £17,000 | Think finance as well as Fido

Cats and dogs don't go cheap (that's budgies). New ICM research shows their upkeep now averages over £1,000/year. A chunk of this is vets bills (which are rising heavily), kennels & catteries. So for some it's worth considering some cover. We've fully updated our Cheap Pet Insurance guide. Read it for full tips, here's a taster...

  • Cats are 'free spirits' but dogs need legal insurance. By law, you can't be sued if your cat causes injury or property damage. You can with dogs, and costs can be huge, so ensure Fido's insurance includes legal cover, or for £25/year, The Dog's Trust offers this as a standalone.

Money Moral Dilemma

Real Life MONEY MORAL DILEMMA:
Should the cash go to my kids or pay off debt?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
For the first time this month, I'll receive some money for my kids from their estranged dad. When he wasn't giving me any cash I spent the majority of mine on the children's shoes, glasses, food etc, and have racked up a bit of a credit card debt. I feel very guilty, but is it okay to put the cash towards the monthly direct debit to pay off that debt, or should it go on things the kids need from this point? BOARD OF THE WEEK:
MoneySaving in Marriage, Relationships & Family

This board offers plenty of great tips & advice on how to save money in relationships & families. Recent discussions include meal ideas for a one year old, getting help with parenting and how to make the most of life.

Question Of The Week

MoneySaving Polls

Q. Is cash ISA capital fully protected and not subject to stockmarket changes? This is not clear on any site I have visited. Roger, by email

MSE Alana's A: In a word, yes. There are two different types of ISAs - cash ISAs, which are just like normal savings accounts but are tax-free, and stocks and shares ISAs where the value changes based on the investment. Savers can put up to £10,680 in ISAs every year, up to £5,340 of which can be in a cash ISA, see the Full ISA Guide.

Put your money in a cash ISA and there's no risk to your capital (your initial investment) and you should get a defined amount of interest. The main risk to your capital is the bank going bust, but if that happens, then provided it's a UK-registered bank, the first £85,000 you have saved with it (in total) is government-guaranteed (see Safe Savings).

This week's poll:

Which loyalty points wear the crown?

Last week's poll result:

Are there too many gas & electricity choices?

A massive 46% of MoneySavers want rid of the rigmarole of energy bills, voting that companies should all have just one flat rate.

This was followed by 36% who want the choice of tariffs reduced to just a few, even if it means losing out on the cheapest but seeing the most expensive fall.

18% are happy to keep playing the switching game if it means they pay less and the less active pay more.
