We've always tipped that getting top value broadband involves pouncing on short-lived deals, usually via comparison sites. And this is a POUNCE day (skip to best-buys). Virgin has cut its price and expanded its reach (it was 57% of UK homes, it's now 64% as it's offering some Virgin deals through its Nexfibre subsidiary). And there are new deals from Vodafone and Sky too, including TV, which are some of the cheapest this year.

With seven million homes out of contract, free to switch, yet being charged way over the odds... check what you pay now. Carol recently emailed us: "I've been with BT forever... over 20 years! When my contract was coming to an end, BT upped it to £60/mth for my broadband. I took Martin's advice to check what was out there. Ended up elsewhere at £24/mth. Over a two-year contract, that's a whopping £864 saving. Thank you very much."

On Universal Credit or similar benefits?
Social tariffs	Many providers offer special discounted social broadband tariffs, which give long-term cheap prices of usually £13/mth to £20/mth for 30Mb+. Add your postcode via the link above and, within your search results, you'll see the social tariffs local to you.
- Our 'equivalent cost' adds all costs, deducts promo credits and averages over the contract so you can compare easily. - There are over 100 small 'alt net' local providers across the UK. It's worth checking those in your area too as not all are in our tool.

Broadband service ratings are worse than other sectors, so all scores are lower. See our full broadband service poll results.
At least 50% of customers must get the advertised speeds at peak times. All bigger providers (including those in the table above) are able to indicate your estimated minimum speed pre-application.
Slow broadband? Before switching, test your speed - is the issue just your Wi-Fi or is it the connection to your home? Do a speed check - first via Wi-Fi, then by plugging your device into the router (if you can). If Wi-Fi's a lot slower, try our speed-boosters.
You no longer need to contact your current provider to switch. Ofcom changed the rules last year, so now there's a 'One Touch Switch' service available on all providers, meaning the new firm should seamlessly sort it for you without you needing to contact the old one.
Switching usually only means about two hours' downtime - whether an engineer comes depends on what you're getting. You're told the switch time, and most don't need an engineer to set it up. There are exceptions to this - if you're moving to or from Virgin, you may need one (you're told before applying). Plus, if you're getting fibre to the premises (FTTP) - a fibre cable fitted to bring superfast connection into your home too - it may need someone to look at the externals of your home (but usually not to come into it).
Don't want to switch? Haggle. In our June poll, the vast majority of those who'd haggled with the big broadband firms were successful. Use the deals above as a benchmark to help get costs down, then try to get your existing firm to match it. Read full Broadband haggling tips.
Members of cashback sites can occasionally undercut deals. In some cases, the cashback can mean these sites undercut promos elsewhere, though sometimes the deal differs - so check carefully. More in Top cashback sites.

Can't afford to clear your debts? You can't afford not to try this...

The credit card balance transfer price war is hotting up. A year ago the longest 0% deal was 28mths, now it's up to 35mths. So if you're paying interest on credit or store cards, take five minutes to check this out. A 0% balance transfer is where you get a new card that pays off debts on existing cards for you, so you owe it instead, but interest-free for a set period. That means more of your repayments clear the actual debt, rather than servicing the interest - getting you debt-free quicker.

Today's wide card choice means you've a better chance of being accepted. The savings can be huge, as Bernadette emailed: "Thanks to your in-depth info and explanation, I applied for a 0% balance transfer. I got 23 months and paid a fee. I transferred £2,000 of high-interest credit card debt. I then applied for another card and got 20 months 0% for the remaining £1,000 [my interest savings were around £750/yr]. I'm delighted to finally make headway on clearing my debt - I have set up a min Direct Debit and also a high monthly bank transfer. Thank you all so much." So first some need-knows, then the best buys:

Protect your credit score by finding the card you're most likely to be accepted for. Our Balance Transfer Eligibility Calc shows your odds of getting each card BEFORE you apply, minimising applications on your credit file.
Go for the lowest fee with a 0% period long enough to clear the debt. Longer 0% cards usually have a bigger one-off fee (eg, 3% is £30 per £1,000), so if you can clear debt quicker, it's cheaper. Unsure? Play safe & go long.
Usually rejected when you apply? There are poorer-credit-scorer 0% cards in the eligibility calc. Plus the free MSE Credit Club (easiest route is via the MSE App on Apple | Android) can analyse your credit issues.

ALWAYS follow the Balance Transfer Golden Rules:
a) Never miss the minimum monthly repayment, or you could lose the 0% deal & it'll cost far more.
b) Aim to clear the card (or balance-transfer again) before the 0% ends, or the rate rockets to the higher APR.
c) Don't spend or withdraw cash. It usually isn't at the cheap rate & withdrawals may hit your ability to access credit.
d) If you don't transfer at application, you've often only 60 to 90 days to get the 0%. Check your card's terms.

Over 8 million people may be due up to £25 BILLION of unclaimed benefits. Are you one?
Struggling? Help's available, even for some with higher incomes - don't assume 'it's not me'

Millions of workers, families & pensioners have paid into the system for years, are in need of help, but think "benefits aren't for people like me" or "I won't qualify". Often that's wrong (try our benefits check-up tool). Benefits are both a political hot potato, and a lifeline to many struggling to get by, including millions of people who are in work and on low incomes. Research firm Policy in Practice has just released its 2025 data on how many miss out on means-tested benefits across England, Scotland and Wales (the Govt may have its own views on numbers), and we've used that to help show you the big areas worth checking.

Important... when we suggest 'worth checking if', we're not saying everyone in that position will get something, just that's the main group of people for who it's worth spending a little time to see if you do or don't qualify.

COUNCIL TAX SUPPORT (not N. Ireland) - up to 2.6 MILLION households miss out on an average of £1,300+/yr. Frustratingly, many people who qualify for Universal Credit and Pension Credit miss out on this as they don't know you need to apply for it separately [a process that needs to change - Martin]. Every council runs its own scheme, so what you get depends on where you live, but it can cut your Council Tax bill by up to 100%. Worth checking if... you live in Eng, Scot or Wales, and qualify for benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit. See Council Tax Support help.

UNIVERSAL CREDIT - up to 1.7 MILLION households miss out on an average £6,700/yr. The catch-all monthly benefit to support those of working age (with lower income) with living & housing costs. Worth checking if... you have household income of up to roughly £35,000/yr, though if you've kids, high childcare costs and pay rent, it can be as high as £50,000/yr. To check...

ATTENDANCE ALLOWANCE - around 1 MILLION pensioners miss out on a minimum £3,800/yr. Regardless of your income, if you're a state pensioner who needs help with daily living (say washing or eating) or someone to watch over you, during the day or night, you may be due a fixed payout of at least £3,842/yr to cover some of the costs. Worth checking if... you need this help (even if you're not getting it). It's common for those with Parkinson's, dementia, terminal illness, blindness and more. We've been campaigning to raise awareness of this for a number of years - our full Attendance Allowance help guide takes you through it in the detail needed.

Since campaigning on it we've had lots of successes, such as Sian's, who emailed: "My mum and I wanted to say a huge thanks for sharing really useful and clear guidance on Attendance Allowance. My mum was approved for the higher allowance full amount [£5,741/yr]! 🙂 This financial support will make a huge difference to her maintaining her independence. We cannot thank the MSE Team enough." Though it's not all roses, we get failures too, as the system is inconsistent. The guide will take you through how to navigate it and get bespoke help.

Note: The '1 million missing out' is an older estimate, as it wasn't in this report (regardless, it's still a shedload).
PENSION CREDIT - over 760,000 pensioner households miss out on an average £2,100/yr. Pension Credit gives low-income state pensioners a top-up to their income. It's worth £2,100/yr on average, but claim even if you're only due 50p, as its SUPERPOWER is as a gateway benefit that means you qualify for loads of other help, eg, Council Tax reductions, free TV licences (if you're over 75).

Worth checking if... you're a state pensioner on a low income. Martin's rule of thumb is if you've total income under £230/wk (£350/wk for pensioner couples) you are likely to get it, or if you've total income under £245/wk (£365/wk for pensioner couples) it's worth checking as there's a chance you may be due. CARER'S ALLOWANCE - 550,000+ carers miss out on up to £4,331/yr. This is a specific payment for the UK's army of unpaid carers [who save the NHS and care system a fortune and should be loudly lauded for it. Yet of course they're not, many miss out on even the relatively small £83.30/wk payment they're due - Martin].

Worth checking if... you care for someone for 35+ hours a week and earn under £196/wk [outrageously, earn 1p over, and you lose the whole payment, a perverse cliff-edge that must be ended - Martin] or have a low State Pension. You must be caring for someone who gets Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Disability Living Allowance or similar, who needs help with everyday tasks such as washing or cooking. It can be for a family member, spouse, child or someone you're not related to. Full details of who's eligible to claim in Carer's Allowance.

PS: If you care for someone for less than 35hrs a week, you may be entitled to Carer's Credit, which helps build National Insurance years for your State Pension (it's back-claimable for a year too, so click the link to read more).
HOUSING BENEFIT - up to 230,000 renting state pensioners miss out on an average £4,800/yr rent help. This is only for those of State Pension age who rent (for younger folk, it's done as part of Universal Credit). Worth checking if... you're eligible for Pension Credit, so are on a lower income. It can usually be applied for at the same time as Pension Credit, but if you didn't do that and already receive Pension Credit but not Housing Benefit, apply through your council.
FREE SCHOOL MEALS - 120,000+ families miss out on over £560 food help for children. A cooked meal served to eligible under-18s during the school or college day. Worth checking if... you're on a very low income (eg, typically under £7,400/yr in England and Wales) and you've had a Universal Credit payment (you need to get that before applying). It's crucial to remember you may need to re-register at the start of each school year for each child. Rules can vary in each UK nation, so for full info, see our Free school meals help guide.
SOCIAL TARIFFS - over 7.5 million households miss out on broadband help, and up to 3.9 million households miss out on water bills help. Social tariffs are special discount rates offered by private companies for people on lower incomes or on other benefits. Worth checking if... for broadband social tariffs, you usually need to be on a means-tested benefit, such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit, though it can vary by firm. Uniquely, our Broadband comparison tool can include these in the results, so you can see how they stack up against the best deals. For water, even if you're not on benefits, simply being on a low income may qualify you for a water social tariff (not N. Ireland, as there are no standalone water bills there).

MONEY MORAL DILEMMA

Should I ask my lodger to pay more rent because she regularly has guests? I have a lodger, and she largely has my house to herself as I'm often away. I have several security cameras that she's aware of, and on reviewing them, it's clear she often has guests over to stay. While I'm not happy about having random people in my home, she's otherwise respectful, as well as clean, tidy and reliable. But I've been thinking she should pay more rent to cover the increased use of energy and water, plus general wear and tear. Do I approach her about it and risk losing an otherwise good lodger, or turn a blind eye?
