Birthday freebies

Free treats and discounts on your birthday

We've compiled a list of the best birthday offers and freebies, most of which you can get by simply signing up to free newsletters or loyalty cards. Offers can change and some outlets remain tight-lipped on the full details – so think of them as a bonus rather than guaranteed. If you're already signed up but miss your birthday treat during lockdown, some companies will let you nab 'em later.

If you were a member of the previous 'Friends of Krispy Kreme' rewards app or loyalty scheme, you should be able to log in and your previous offers will be converted to 'Smiles'. You'll usually get 10 'Smiles' per £1 spent in a store, online, or in cabinets.

    MSE Rhiannon says:

As my birthday was during the first national lockdown, I used my reward online. I had to pay £3 delivery and it took some time, but I was able to buy two £2.50 soaps, plus an item on sale for £1 so I got my money's worth.

  • If you sign up to the free Space NK* Ndulge loyalty card, you can get double points when you spend online or in stores (when they reopen) for your birthday, plus a free gift which you can pick up in a store after lockdown (find your nearest*) or add to an online order.

Space NK told us the free gift changes monthly – the example we were sent included: Bumble & Bumble glow thermal refresher, 30ml (worth £6ish based on full-size product), Ren 'Perfect Canvas' oil cleanser, 15ml (worth £3ish), and CEO 'Rapid Flash' brightening serum, 8ml (worth £18ish).

Note: As stores are currently closed, we've contacted Paperchase to ask if there's any other way to join, however, if you've already picked up a card you should still be able to register it online to get the treat. If not, you should be able to pick one up after lockdown is lifted, but you may need to wait for next year to get your treat, depending on when your birthday is.

It's valid for up to 14 days after your birthday. You'll not be able to use it with any other offer but when we tested it we were able to use it on sale items in-store prior to lockdown, and online during lockdown.

    MSE Rhiannon says:

If you're a fan of Paperchase, picking up its 'Treat Me' card when you can is well worth it for this birthday offer alone, as well as the initial 15% off code valid for the first 30 days after you get your card. If you spend £50 in six months, you'll get another £5 to spend and the card also gets free upgrades to next day delivery (any spend), or free click & collect (normally £2.99, not currently available in lockdown) on £10+ spends.

As my birthday was during the first national lockdown, I used my reward online. I was able to buy a £2.50 bag in the sale, plus a fun pen, and a pack of photocorners I needed, but did have to pay £2.99 delivery.

  • If you sign up to the Build-A-Bear Workshop loyalty scheme, on your child’s birthday they can make a bear (norm £14) and pay their age in pounds, eg, three-year-olds get a bear for £3, when Build-A-Bear stores reopen.

How do I get this offer?

    • Sign up to the free Bonus Club loyalty scheme, online in advance or in store – a grown-up will have to do this.
    •  A child under 14 should attend during their birthday month (or when stores re-open) with a grown-up aged over 18 to claim a discounted bear.
    • Let the workshop know you're celebrating a birthday to get this offer.

As the special Birthday Treat Bear in this offer is normally £14, it's for kids aged under 14 years.

Build-A-Bear says no proof of age is needed – it’s done on trust – but you might be told to get stuffed if you try telling them your 12-year-old is six.

Which bear can I get and how much are they normally?

The offer only applies to the Make-Your-Own Birthday Treat Bear, and isn't available online (although the bear is, but you'll have to pay the full £14 for it unless you have a discount code). You'll get a special birthday heart for your bear, a birthday hat and sticker, and you can take a photo with special birthday props.

However, it's only the bear that's included in this offer. You'd need to pay for any clothing, accessories, sounds or scents you choose to add. If your child's under one, you'll pay £1.

For full T&Cs, see Build-A-Bear's Count your candles page.

What if my birthday is during lockdown when stores are closed?

Build-A-Bear says: "The Count Your Candles promotion will be available for anyone who missed their birthday celebration when we reopen."

Make sure to sign up at least three weeks before your child's birthday, as that's when the offer's first sent, or you won't receive the discount until the following year. The discount expires at midnight on the day of the birthday, so be sure to use it before then.
