Some Sky TV customers could be hit with price hikes of up to £2.50 a month from 1 September, the telecoms provider has said.
Sky has confirmed TV customers will be hit with an average price rise of 2.5%. It follows a warning of price hikes of up to 10% posted on Sky's website last month (see the Sky TV prices set to rise MSE News story).
The packages hit by price increases are as follows:
- Sky Entertainment Extra or Sky Entertainment Extra+: Will increase by 50p/month, taking prices to £27/month and £32/month respectively.
- Sky Multiroom: Will increase by £1/month to £11.25/month.
- Sky Sports Pack 1 & 2: Will increase by £1/month to £22/month. Those with only Sky Sports 1, or only Sky Sports 2 are not affected.
If you have all the packages listed above, bills will jump by an extra £30/year.
Customers with Sky Talk Freetime, Weekends and Anytime home phone packages will also see a change in some call rates, which Sky says represents a 1.5% increase on the average Sky Talk customer bill.
Some international call rates will also increase on 5 July.
But there's no change to its broadband, line rental, home phone, HD, movies or basic entertainment TV package pricing.
What if I signed up via a discount or special deal?
If you signed up via a discount or special deal, while you'll continue to get your offer, you will be hit by the price rises once the first 60 days of the subscription to your chosen service is up.
For example, MoneySavingExpert.com had an exclusive offer earlier this year for MoneySavers to get 50% off when joining Sky TV, while only last month Sky hit back against rival BT's move to offer free TV sport with its broadband by announcing it'll offer free broadband to Sky Sports customers (see the Sky offers free broadband for sports subscribers MSE News story).
Can I get out of my contract?
Those outside of their minimum contract period, which is generally anyone outside the first year of their contract, can leave without having to pay an early exit fee.
However, anyone within their minimum contract period cannot leave without having to pay an early exit fee.
Yet Sky's terms state customers can leave without penalty, if contract changes leave them to be 'materially disadvantaged'.
If you want to leave as a result of the increases, it is worth arguing this point with Sky, if appropriate. You can then take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Services if you get nowhere.
