The MSE chocolate bunny taste test – how do supermarket own-brands compare to Lindt?
The Lindt chocolate bunny is widely regarded as the gold standard of Easter treats, though it's rarely the most MoneySaving bunny-shaped choc – so in classic MSE fashion, this called for a taste test. The team at MSE Towers were all ears when we asked for volunteers to taste cheaper supermarket own-brand chocolate bunny alternatives alongside Lindt. So let's stop rabbiting on and hop to it.
Many supermarkets and brands do a chocolate rabbit for Easter, but I wanted to make sure we were focussed on Lindt bunny dupes, that are designed to taste and look similar – but not too similar – you may remember in 2022, a Swiss court ordered Lidl to melt its lookalike Lindt bunnies.
Here are our seven taste test bunny contenders, ranging in price from £1 (at Tesco) to the most expensive, Lindt, costing between £3 and £3.75 depending on where you shop.
Brand and product name | Price |
Tesco Easter Milk Chocolate Bunny 100g | £1 |
Aldi Moser Roth Chocolate Bunny 100g | £1.49 |
Asda Milk Chocolate Sitting Bunny 100g | £1.50 |
Sainsbury’s Milk Chocolate Easter Bunny 100g | £1.50 |
M&S Plant Kitchen Foiled Hollow Vegan Bunny 100g | £2.50 |
M&S Swiss Milk Chocolate Baby Bunny 100g | £2.50 |
Lindt Easter Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate 100g | £3 to £3.75 |
We wanted this test to be about taste, not looks, so the chocolate bunnies were broken up and placed in separate numbered bowls to assure anonymity.
I asked our 23 taste-testers to consider two main questions:
1. Which bunny is your favourite?
2. Which bunny do you think is Lindt?
Testers were also asked to give us any general thoughts they had about the chocolate.
Which bunny is your favourite? | Price | Votes |
WINNER: Lindt Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate 100g |
£3 to £3.75 | 13 |
Tesco Easter Milk Chocolate Bunny 100g | £1 | 9 |
M&S Swiss Milk Chocolate Baby Bunny 100g | £2.50 | 1 |
Which bunny do you think is Lindt? | Price | Votes |
Lindt Easter Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate 100g | £3 to £3.75 | 14 |
Tesco Easter Milk Chocolate Bunny 100g | £1 | 6 |
M&S Swiss Milk Chocolate Baby Bunny 100g | £2.50 | 2 |
And the winner is...
Lindt! Turns out it's the gold standard after all, however Tesco's milk chocolate bunny came within a hare of it, with 39% of our taste testers choosing the cheapest £1 bunny as the tastiest.
Lindt was clearly recognisable to our testers, even without seeing the gold wrapping and sparkly bell. Though while Tesco's wrapping doesn't look as premium, based purely on taste, over a quarter of our testers were convinced Tesco’s cheap bunny was actually the pricier Lindt version – so if premium looks isn't a priority, it could be worth giving Tesco's a try to see if you can downshift and save at least 66%.
It's also worth bearing in mind that you're often paying extra for the novelty shape, so if you love the Lindt taste, but aren't fussed about it being a bunny, Lindt's Classic Recipe Milk bar was about £1.60 per 100g when we checked, compared to its bunny costing from £3 per 100g. It's the same ingredients, but about 50% cheaper.
Never ones to shy away from the truth, here's what our tasters thought:
