McDonald's Monopoly 2024 – when it starts and tips for boosting your chances of winning

There are many versions of the classic Monopoly game these days but one that many fast-foodies look forward to each year is McDonald's Monopoly. If you're going to eat under the golden arches or order a McDelivery, this promo can be a fun way to win a 'free' bite to eat, or if you're lucky, something bigger.

McDonald's Monopoly is essentially a prize draw, where you collect stickers from the packaging of selected menu items, with two main ways to win:

  • Peel an 'instant win' sticker which gives you free food or drink to claim at the counter.

  • Collect property sets, much like you would in a normal Monopoly game, to win a bigger prize.

You can also scan property stickers into the McDonald's app (free at the App Store and Google Play), where they'll be stored in a virtual wallet to help you keep track of your collection. For every property you scan into the app, you'll also receive a bonus digital peel.

This promotion shouldn't be an excuse to sneak a Big Mac meal into your five-a-day. However, many MoneySavers have told us they think of it as a bit of harmless fun, so if you'll eat there anyway, here's how it works and a few tips to boost your chances of a win.

How long is McDonald's Monopoly on for?

McDonald's Monopoly is on now and will end on Tuesday 15 October.

How does it work?

On selected McDonald's food and drink items, you'll find stickers attached which are either a property, or an 'instant win' food item.

McDonald's told us stickers can be found on the following items: Cold drinks (from McDonald's cups, not valid on bottles of juice for example), medium and large fries, three and five chicken selects, Philly Cheesestack, Chicken Big Mac, large salad, cheese sharebox, McPlant, McSpicy, McCrispy, mozzarella dipper bag, blended ice drinks, McFlurry (core flavours), deli wraps and veggie wraps.

A sticker will contain one of the following:

  • An 'instant prize win' sticker which gets you free food. You could win apple pies, cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, fries, ice creams, hot drinks and more. Simply take your sticker to the counter to claim there and then, or before the expiry date shown on the sticker. There are millions of instant win food prizes, so this is your best chance of winning.

  • A Monopoly property sticker which helps you towards the big prizes. This is more akin to the classic Monopoly game, where you collect properties in their colour sets. If you're lucky enough to collect a full set, you can win a big prize, such as an electric car, a holiday or £100,000.

If you get a Monopoly property sticker, scan it in to the McDonald's app for a bonus 'digital peel' for more chances to win (though you can only upload a maximum of 24 digital peel entries a day per app account). There are three outcomes from a digital peel – a cash prize (£5 to £100), an instant win prize (food, McDonald’s merchandise, and other smaller prizes such as vouchers and subscriptions) or a property which you can either bank or swap for another property or a prize draw entry (for a chance to win a big prize of £100,000).

A new addition for 2024, if you peel a digital sticker on a Monday then you could win a 'Mayfair Monday' cash prize of £20,000.

Prizes also include 2,000 'McDonald's Gold Cards' in its Monopoly game. If you win one, you'll get a free meal every week for a year at any McDonald's restaurant, which you can redeem through the My McDonald's app. These are obviously very rare and won't be easy to come by though.

Prizes must be claimed by Tuesday 29 October – this is only two weeks after McDonald's Monopoly ends so go quickly. For a full list of prizes and how many of each are available, see the full McDonald's Monopoly terms and conditions.

How can I increase my chances of winning?

While McDonald's Monopoly is very much a game of luck, there are some things you can do to increase your chance of a win.

1. Double your chances of winning via the McDonald's app

The app features a digital game board and prize wallet. As mentioned above, you can get a bonus 'digital peel' for free when you scan your physical property stickers into the McDonald's app – giving you more chances to win.

2. Sign up to the McDonald's Rewards scheme for a bonus peel

If you sign up, or you're already signed up, to the McDonald's Rewards scheme, you'll receive a code for a free bonus peel, which will be sent to the email address you set your account up with.

3. Keep a tight hold of rarely-found stickers

Within each set of properties there is a rare or uncommon sticker. If you're peeling lucky and manage to find one of these, make sure you keep hold of it (or scan it into the app) as the remaining stickers in the set will be much easier to find, giving you a good chance of winning the prize for that set.

Previously these have been the rare stickers to look out for (though McDonald's wouldn't confirm if these are the same this year):

4. 'Womble' unchecked stickers, such as picking them up off abandoned tables

You don't need to be Uncle Bulgaria to take advantage of the fact that not everyone who eats or drinks at McDonald's will be taking part in its Monopoly promotion and won't peel their stickers.

We also know that not everyone disposes of their packaging in the bins provided, so look out for empty cups and other packaging that still have stickers attached and you may be able to find some free food instant wins, an online game code, or a property you need to get closer to completing a set.

It's worth noting that wombling is against some companies' T&Cs. We asked McDonald's for its stance and it didn't get back to us, though we've no reports of issues in previous years.

Use our McDonald's tricks to get food & stickers more cheaply

Look out for ways to get your food or drink cheaper so that you're saving money on what you would have bought anyway, plus playing the game to potentially get freebies – see our McDonald's MoneySaving hacks for ideas.

For example, there's a trick to get a Big Mac and fries for '£2.99' – this will get you the same number of stickers as if you'd paid the normal price of about £7.
