You can get FREE access to many historical sites and tourist attractions this month including National Trust sites, castles, locations used for TV and film, and more. It's all part of site open days across the United Kingdom.
The sites included usually charge an admission fee or are closed to the public at other times of the year.
When free open days are happening in different parts of the UK
England: Heritage Open Days is on from Friday 12 to Sunday 21 September and includes 5,800+ locations and events. There are only a small number in London, but a separate event called Open House Festival is running from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 September.
Northern Ireland: European Heritage Open Days is on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September. It includes 300+ sites and properties.
Scotland: Doors Open Days runs during weekends in September with hundreds of sites opening.
Wales: Open Doors is on throughout the whole of September with 190+ sites opening for free.
How to book your free visit (if you need to)
For some attractions you'll need to book in advance (popular sites typically get booked up quickly), but for others you'll be able to just turn up on the day. If you do need to book, there'll be a link or instructions provided on the site's entry on the websites above. If you don't need to, it may be worth double-checking with the venue before your visit anyway.

England – Heritage Open Days, from 12 to 21 September
Strawberry Field, Merseyside

Friday 12, Saturday 13, Friday 19 & Saturday 20 September, 12pm & 1pm
Imagine... you could visit the famous Strawberry Field in Liverpool for free. Immortalised by the Beatles' hit Strawberry Fields Forever, this is where a young John Lennon often played.

Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire

Saturday 13 September, 10.30am to 5pm
Famous Brit William Morris called this place 'Heaven on Earth', and now you can go see if you agree, for free.

East Anglia Transport Museum, Suffolk

Saturday 13 September, 12pm to 4pm
Before electric scooters, Lime bikes, and Teslas, people used to get around on trams, trolleybuses, and the narrow gauge railway – and now you can take a ride on these transport treasures for one day only.

The Bowes Museum, Durham

Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, 10am to 4.30pm
Delve into the architecture of buildings, fashion, art, and landscapes, with workshops, trails, interactive games, and more.

Shibden Hall, West Yorkshire

Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, 11am to 3pm
They certainly didn't get the beds here from Ikea. Shibden Hall gives a glimpse of life at the family estate that was home to diarist Anne Lister in the 19th century. It featured in the BBC drama Gentleman Jack about Lister's life.

Guards Museum, Birdcage Walk, London

Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, 10.30am to 4pm
Right by Buckingham Palace, you'll get to see a historic re-enactors camp, test your aim with the Army Cadets, dress up in an iconic King's Guard uniform, and lots more royal revelry.

Royal Holloway, University of London, Surrey

Sunday 14 September, 9.30am to 4pm
The Founder's Building at Royal Holloway is a Grade I listed building that was home to one of the first higher education colleges for women and was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886.

National Trust: Chartwell House, Kent

Monday 15 September, 10am to 5pm
The family home of Sir Winston Churchill from 1922 to 1965.

How Stean Gorge, North Yorkshire

A gorge-ous outdoor adventure site with caves, tunnels, and winding paths. Bring wellies and a torch.

Gilbert White's House & Gardens, Hampshire

Thursday 18 September, 10.30am to 4.40pm
Explore the home, garden, and brewhouse of writer and naturalist Gilbert White.

National Trust: Felbrigg Hall Walled Garden, Norfolk

An impressively landscaped garden – we're talking flower borders, vegetable beds, fruit trees, and an octagonal dovecote dating back to the early 1750s. If that isn't enticing enough, there are chickens.

Lewes Castle & Museum, East Sussex

Friday 19 September, 10am to 5pm
Lewes, famous for its big bonfire, is also home to a Norman castle (complete with cannon) built after the Battle of Hastings by supporters of William the Conqueror. Bear in mind, there are a number of stairs to climb here.

National Trust: Portland House, Dorset

Friday 19, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September, 10am to 4pm
Overlooking the Portland harbour, this 1930s art deco villa brings some Hollywood glamour to the Dorset coast, with its palm trees and sea view.

Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse, Norfolk

Sunday 21 September, 10am to 5pm
Gressenhall's collections and interactive displays show what life was like in the Victorian workhouse, which opened in 1777.

BFI National Film & Television Archive, Hertfordshire

Sunday 21 September, 10.30am to 4pm
A chance to check out how the BFI's collection of film, video, and television archives are preserved. There'll be technical demonstrations, displays, and talks.

National Trust: Castle Ward, County Down

Saturday 13 September, 10am to 4pm
National Trust property including an 18th-century mansion with a mixture of architectural styles.

Blackhead Lightkeepers' Houses, County Antrim

The lighthouse was important in guiding vessels, including The Titanic, through Belfast Lough.

Tredegar Town Clock, Monmouthshire

Saturday 6 September, 10am to 12pm
If you like big clocks then this one's for you. Climb the interior ladders of the tallest freestanding clock in the UK, built in 1858.

National Trust: Powis Castle & Gardens, Powys

Maintained by the National Trust, this is a 13th century medieval fortress with gardens looking across the Severn Valley.

One of the fortresses that formed King Edward I's 'ring of castles'.

Why do they do this?
The spirit of these open days is to celebrate hidden history and culture. However, a small number of privately-owned properties taking part get funding or have tax-exempt collections, which means they must allow public access for a certain number of days a year – but most of them just open up for the joy of it.
