Tens of thousands of mortgage customers will be entitled to compensation after the city watchdog fined a lender for hammering those in arrears with excessive charges.
Anyone recently self-employed or who cannot prove their income could be excluded from getting a mortgage under proposals announced today by the City regulator.
Consumers whose mortgage payment protection insurance (MPPI) costs have increased this year will get an automatic refund, following regulatory pressure.
