Martin's Quick Briefing

Save £1,000 in a day
Don't read this if you earn over £525,000 a year

The nation's letter flaps are groaning as post-Xmas brown envelopes arrive. Taking a day to cut your bills, treating it like a job, saves many £1,000 over the year. And unless you earn £525,000+, that's the best paid day of the year. Here's proof it works.

Tweeted by @payattentionpls: "@martinslewis Saved £2,000+ switching card and £370 on internet, phone, TV package. Gas and Elec next.Yeah"

7:30am. Save £100s with a water meter. While brushing your teeth, ask yourself if your home's got more bedrooms than people. If so, check the Water Meter guide to save.
8:00. Can you get a uniform tax rebate? Do any of your family wear a work uniform? If you wash, repair or replace it yourself, you may be able to reclaim £100s of tax for up to six years. Full help: Uniform Rebate
8:30. Missing £1,000s of childcare help? If on the school run, think about childcare. If you pay for it – including after-school clubs – earn under £40,000 and work 16hrs+ each, you may be entitled to Childcare Tax Credits, worth an average £3,000 a year. Otherwise, Childcare Vouchers can cut costs by 30%.
9:15. Analyse your finances with a budget planner. Most importantly, work out if you spend more than you earn. If so, you risk dangerously building up debt. Use the Free Budget Analyser to ensure you're on track.
10:30. Bite £100s off food bills. While snacking, check what grocery brands you buy, and try my Downshift Challenge, it can chop £850 a year off a £100/week shop.
11:00. Gas & electricity, save £100s in 10 mins. If you're on a standard tariff, a typical bill's £1,320 a year, but you could pay £1,030 for the same usage. Top comparison sites: Energyhelpline* (pays £15 cashback per switch), Moneysupermarket* (£30 per dual fuel), Uswitch* (crate of wine). Full help: Cheap Gas & Electricity guide.
11:10. Spend a penny. Afraid, no way to save there.
11:15. Haggle £100s off Sky, broadband, the AA & more. @stumpyian's tweet says it all: "@martinslewis Threatened to leave Sky, said I couldn't afford and it halved my bill". See the Top 10 Companies To Haggle With.
12pm. Slash credit card costs OR soup-up savings. If you have high interest debts AND savings, you're throwing cash away. Pay Off Costly Debts with Savings and you'll be massively up. To cut card costs, see the main email below.

Check savings, earn a min 3%. Santander's* 3.1% AER with unlimited access. Get a tad more with Nationwide's 3.12% AER but only one withdrawal a year's allowed, or West Brom's* 3.13% AER, but on £10k min. All incl 1 year bonuses. Full warnings in Top Savings. Also see Top Cash ISAs.
1:00. Lunch is for wimps, check for mis-sold PPI. While eating, check old loan & credit card agreements. As @elerisalter tweeted: "@martinslewis I thought claiming my PPI would not really be worth it as I had small loans. Then I was offered £5,362." Yet don't throw 25% to claims handlers, Reclaim PPI for Free.
2:00. Slash insurance by £100s in 30 mins. Never auto-renew, always check for cheaper. For max quotes in min time, combine as many comparison sites as you can as their searches aren't identical. Try Gocompare*, Confused*, CompareTM* and MoneySupermarket*, then add Aviva* & Direct Line* that comparisons miss & try for hidden cashback. Full step-by-step: Cheap Car Insurance, Cheap Home Insurance.
2:30. Grab free £125 for switching bank account. Banks will bribe you to switch accounts, so grab it. First Direct* pays £125 to switchers and has top customer service (min £23,100 earnings). Earn over £14,200? Santander* pays £100, plus a £30 Amazon voucher and gives a year's 0% overdraft and 5% in-credit interest, but customer service is poor. Halifax pays £100, plus £5/month, but avoid its costly overdraft. Full info in Best Bank Accounts.
3:00. Council tax, mortgage and home phone. Now whizz through some home bills. Checking & Challenging your Council Tax can be worth £1,000s, Remortgaging can too, and check out £6.49/month line rental.
3:30. Drive petrol costs down 20%. Before picking the kids up, declutter your car so you're carrying less weight. When driving don't over-accelerate, speed up gradually and keep your distance so you brake less. Use petrolprices.com to find the cheapest forecourts and read Petrol Cashback Deals for more tips.
4:00. Still got energy? This is only the beginning. The full Moneymakeover guide has over 40 key savings, and shows how to keep your budget on track.

Something to listen to as you do it. Check out this Radio 2 £1,000 in a day Vine special, including the slightly concerning: "My hubby Rob reduced outgoings by £2,400 a year – the water meter, uniform tax rebate etc. Though I was fed up of him sitting in front of the PC every night with Martin Lewis."

January Money Makeover Special

25 Jan 2012

Urgent. 0% for 2 YEARS deal about to close
Last chance for longest ever interest-free offer (3.2% fee) for cutting existing debt costs

It's the week most people get their Christmas credit card bills and if you haven't sorted them yet, don't delay. A Balance Transfer lets you shift existing card debt to a new card at a much lower rate, so your cash clears the actual debt, not just services the interest. All cards require a credit check, and don't miss monthly repayments or you can lose the 0%.

  • Longest 0% closing – 24 months 0%, 3.2% fee. Accepted new Barclaycard* Platinum customers can shift debts to it for 24 mths 0% for a fee of 3.2% of the amount transferred, yet it's said the card's closing to new applicants on 1 Feb.

balance transfersTop for existing Barclaycard holders are Halifax* at 22 months 0% with a 3.5% fee & NatWest*/RBS* 20 months 0% for 2.9%. Fully repay these cards or switch again before the 0% ends or they all jump to 17.9% representative APR.
  • Lowest fee 0% – 13 months 0%, 1% fee. If you're sure you can fully repay quicker, new NatWest* or RBS* cardholders get 0% for 13 months for a one-off 1% fee. For a touch longer, a different Barclaycard* is 16 months 0% for 1.6%. Plan to repay in full when the 0% ends or they're 17.9% or 18.9% representative APR.
  • Long term lock in – 6.9% for life. If you need 3-4yrs+ to repay, the Sainsbury's* card lets you shift debts to it at 6.9% APR with no fee. Yet this is a 'representative' APR, so only 51% of accepted applicants must get the 6.9%, others may pay more. While it's a variable rate, regulations mean you're effectively locking in, as if you don't miss payments, you've a right to reject rises if you agree not to borrow more. See Rate Jacking rules.

If unsure which is right for you, try our 'Which card's your cheapest?' tool. Full Help: Balance Transfers (see Official APR Examples) Related: 18 months 0% spending, Debt Crisis Help, Credit Rating

  5. Earn cash as an Avon lady (or man). We've been surprised by the popularity of the dedicated Avon Rep Hints & Tips forum thread.

Slash pet insurance costs (it's not just budgies that go cheap)
Average lifetime cat or dog cost now £17,000 | Stand-alone liability cover available

As the Dogs Trust says, a dog is for life, not Christmas. Cats, too, for that matter. ICM research shows the average pet's upkeep is over £1,000/year – a good chunk from vets bills, eg, treating a cat's broken leg can easily exceed £700. We've updated our Cheap Pet Insurance guide to cut costs, here's a taster...

  • Got pets? Protect yourself from rocketing vet feesCats are 'free spirits' but dogs need legal insurance. By law, you can't be sued if your cat causes injury or property damage. You can with dogs, and costs can be huge, so as a bare minimum, ensure your pet insurance includes legal/liability cover. If you've got no pet insurance, for £25/year, The Dogs Trust offers it standalone.
  • Speedily compare dog & cat policies. Combine Gocompare* and Comparethemarket's comparisons to find best quotes from 28 providers, then add some missed by searching Aviva*, Direct Line* & Quotezone*.
  • Horses, snakes, rabbits & more. No comparison sites, so do it manually:

    Horses & Ponies:
Petplan Equine*, Animal Friends* & NFU Mutual. More in the guide.
Rabbits / budgies / chinchillas: Exotic Direct*. For bunnies, Quotezone*, Petplan* & Helpucover*.
Snakes / tarantulas etc: Exotic Direct* is the specialist.

With smaller pets, consider putting money aside monthly to cover bills, effectively self-insuring.

Does the taxman owe you £5,000 too?
Unique free 'tax code' calculator | Millions owed due to errors | Last chance to get 2005-08 overpaid tax

Millions of mistakes, year after year, mean many have overpaid tax by £1,000s. We've banged this drum before, and make no bones about whacking it again. Our full Check Tax Code guide will help, but here's a taster...

  • tax codeEvery EMPLOYEE and PENSIONER check now. There were 4.7m cases in the last tax year alone, and many more errors from previous years. Problems are especially likely if you've changed job, get company benefits, took a work break or get a state or private pension too.
  • Free Tax Code Calculator — record rebate success £5,000. The Tax Code Calculator does what it says on the tin: put in your details, and it shows if the code's roughly right (goes back seven years). The record reported win we've had is Chris Kendall's:

"I read the MSE email, tried the tax code checker, called HMRC and it said I'd get between £5,000 and £7,000 back. Incredible."
  • Deadlines for old tax years about to hit. You can usually only claim back for a set time, and some deadlines are rapidly approaching. Use P60s from those years to get your tax code, which is the key to unravelling this, though a call to HMRC may help (it'll be busy due to the tax deadline)

Deadlines: 31 Jan for the 2005/06 tax year | 31 March for 06/07 tax year | 5 April for 07/08

New 6% APR loans
Cheapest loans in over four years | Yet only down for bigger borrowing

Loan rates have tumbled again. As always, even if you pass the credit check, be wary of new borrowing. Ensure it's necessary, keep it to a minimum, budget to ensure it's affordable and repay as fast as possible. Full help in the Cheap Loans guide, but here's a quick summary...

  • loanNew 6% APR loans for £7,500 - £15,000. If borrowing for 1-3 years, Sainsbury's* is now 6% rep APR, or using this link*, 6.1% for 4-5 years (Nectar card needed). M&S* offers 6% rep APR, if over 30 or a homeowner.

    Quote without commitment:
Representative APR means only 51% of accepted applicants must get this rate, those with poor credit scores can pay much more. Nationwide* lets you get a 'quote without commitment', telling you the rate without it going on your credit file. It's 6.3% rep APR for existing FlexAccount holders, 6.4% for others.
  • 7.8% APR £5,000 - £7,499 loans. Sainsbury's* again comes top. Nectar cardholders get 7.8% rep APR for 1-3 year loans or via this link*, 7.9% for 4-5 years. Alternatively, Alliance & Leicester* is 8% rep APR.

  • Need under £5,000? Go 0%. Loans are hideously expensive, eg, the cheapest £2k loan is 14.9%. If it's something you can buy on plastic, credit cards are cheaper. Nationwide* is a huge 18 months 0%, but you'll need its FlexAccount* (a top pick Best Bank Account). Alternatively, new Marks & Spencer* and Tesco* cardholders get 15 months 0%. Repay before the 0% ends or they're 12.9%, 15.9% and 16.9% rep APR, though still similar to loans (see 0% Cards).

If you need longer to repay, or a loan as cash, this won't work for you. But there is an alternative, using a Credit Card Loan. If you simply want to reduce existing debt costs, see the Best Balance Transfers guide.

Money Moral Dilemma

Real Life MONEY MORAL DILEMMA:
Should I pay for the £700 watch my friend forgot?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
At drama college we always have to remove jewellery and watches for classes, so most don't wear anything. I was last to leave the classroom the other day and saw my classmate forgot her watch. I took it to give to her in the next class but lost it on the way. I felt awful, I bought her some flowers and said I'd pay half the insurance excess. But she says it was worth £700, had sentimental value and that I have to fully reimburse her. We're students and this is a huge amount of money. Question of the week

Board of the week

Q. I had an Egg credit card, which had payment protection insurance (PPI). But now Egg cards have been taken over by Barclaycard, if it transpires I've been mis-sold PPI, will I get my money back? Marie, by email

MSE Helen's A: As you say, Barclaycard bought Egg's credit card assets from Citigroup in April last year so all Egg credit cards were deactivated in November last year and replaced by Barclaycards.

Barclaycard will now deal with all PPI complaints and payouts so former Egg credit card customers who believe they have been mis-sold PPI should take up the issue with Barclaycard, not with former Egg credit card owner Citi.

This applies to ALL former Egg credit card customers, whether or not your account was still open when Barclaycard acquired Egg credit cards in April 2011.

Of course if Barclaycard doesn't pay out after your first complaint (lenders commonly say no) you can take your complaint to the free, independent Ombudsman for a decision. See the PPI reclaiming guide.
