First Utility is the latest energy company to face a backlash from disgruntled customers over unresolved complaints and long call waiting times. But it's admitted it's at fault and says it's investing £20 million to improve its customer services.

SSE has cut switching times to 17 days from today, while First Utility has confirmed it will introduce faster energy switching from 10 November ahead of the New Year's Eve deadline given by Ofgem.

First Utility has cut its fees for customers who pay for their gas and electricity by cash or cheque. But everybody who can should switch to paying by direct debit for their energy, to avoid up to £90 a year in extra charges.
