Money Moral Dilemma

Every week, the Money Tips email features a real-life Money Moral Dilemma (MMD for short). They're intended to encourage debate and, as such, they're usually among the most discussed threads each week.

I loaned my friend £1,000 and she isn't paying it back - what should I do?

I've often loaned my friend money when she's been short, and she's always paid me back over a few months. This time, she borrowed £1,000 - but two weeks later, she asked if she could pay me £20 a month. I have a deteriorating medical condition, and this may be my final year - which she knows, so she must realise it'd take over four years to pay back and that I might not live to see it. I told her I was upset and felt used, and she paid me £50, but there's been no word and no more money since. My daughter thinks I should write it off for the sake of my mental health, but a friend thinks I should tell her husband, who doesn't know about the loans, to try and get it back from him. What would you do?

See what our MSE Forumites had to say and add your own thoughts on the Money Moral Dilemma discussion thread. Do please stick to the MSE Forum rules: keep it kind and keep it clean. Remember, there's a real person behind every dilemma.

Your two cents

Last weekend I was in a charity shop and was surprised to see bottles of Lidl tomato ketchup on sale at twice the original price. That led me to ask: what's the strangest thing you've seen for sale in a charity shop?

I enjoyed the reply from one MoneySaver on Facebook who told us about their struggle to reclaim their daughter's lunch box: "She left it there when we popped in on the way home. I went back the next day. It was on the shelf with a price sticker on. I said it was my daughter's and that we'd accidentally left it, the woman was very dubious and thought I was trying it on. I opened it, and the remains of her lunch were still inside "
