If you’re a part of the Emergency Services (ambulance service, fire service, police etc.) or work for the NHS, if you’ve got valid ID, you should be able to get these discounts below. Some require you to have a Blue Light Card, but others you’ll just need a valid ID card. If you're in the Armed Forces, see our Forces Discounts page.

  • Green Flag is offering free recovery for NHS staff travelling to or from work as well as if you break down at home.

You'll need to call a dedicated phone number on 0800 051 0009 to get a patrol to try and fix your vehicle – you'll need to give your NHS ID number over the phone, and then show your ID card when they arrive.

This service doesn't mean you're signing up as a Green Flag member, you can simply call it if you're having trouble. If you are already a member you should report the usual way as you're likely to have more cover in this case.

You'll still need to pay for any parts used to repair your vehicle, eg, new battery. If you put the wrong fuel in your vehicle, it's not covered.

The offer is for NHS staff only, not volunteers. Green Flag says the offer is ongoing throughout the pandemic but it will keep 'reviewing it' and may withdraw the offer at any time.

  • Halfords is offering NHS and emergency services workers a free 10-point car check. Simply phone and book at your local Halfords or Autocentre garage (find your nearest), then show your NHS ID or Blue Light Card to get the check free.

The free car check includes: Headlight & brake light check, wiper blade condition check, battery health check, windscreen chip check, MOT due date reminder, tyre depth check, tyre inflation check & top up, oil level check, screenwash top-up, and AdBlue & coolant check.

    Ride a bike?

If you use a bike to get to work, Halfords is also offering a free bike service (norm £30) to NHS and emergency workers.

The free bike service includes: Adjustment and alignment of gears, lubrication of drivetrain, and adjustment and alignment of brakes.

  • JustPark is a service where you can find and reserve parking spaces at 45,000+ locations – including private driveways, spare offices spaces, commercial car parks etc. Up until 27 Jul, it had offered free parking to NHS workers, but that deal has now ended, and it's giving 10% off instead.

To get the discount, sign up at JustPark with your NHS email address (@nhs.co.uk), then search for a parking space near where you need to be. The discount will be applied automatically.

If you don't have an NHS email address, sign up in the same way and JustPark will send an email which you can reply to with proof that you're a critical care worker – JustPark will then update your account.

There is currently no end date for this offer.

  • If you work for the NHS, you can get up to 40% off selected AA breakdown cover

You'll get a 40% discount on 'Roadside Assistance', 'National Recovery', 'Onward Travel' or 'At Home'. The AA says a minimum of 20% off applies to all other levels of cover. For example, when we checked, you could get basic 'Roadside Assistance' cover for £35ish (norm £64ish).

You can get the discount when paying by a continuous payment method, either monthly or annually.

Always compare breakdown cover policies to ensure you're getting the best price, and to be certain you're covered for everything you need. See our full cheap breakdown cover guide.

  • Emergency Services and NHS workers, can register for a Blue Light Card to receive discounts for online and high street retailers. Check more info to see if your service is included.

It costs £4.99 for a two-year membership - well worth it if you think you'll save over £5 during this time. See full T&Cs.

Unfortunately, you can't see which other offers are available until you've signed up, but in the past we've spotted offers such as 10% off at Iceland, 10% off at Starbucks, 20% off Superdry, 30% off yoga classes, and discounts at several popular restaurants.

If you have a Blue Light Card, don't just assume it'll give you the best discounts - always compare offers to check you're getting the best deal.
